Application filed Ma lll To all uvt-om t muy oouceriif:
Be it known that l, lili Fior-.1st, a resident oit the cit;Y of Toronto, in the county ot' York, in lthe lrovince utario. Canada, have invented cert" i neu' and useful lrnproveinents in Coinbinetion Tools, ot which the 1tollen'ino' is the s= 't' Fi@ Q is a similar view to `Figure l with the plate rcinoved.
Fig. 3 i.' a inverted plan vieu'. Fig. is a similar View to Figure only with the movable arin oli the square e3;- tended.
Fig'. 5 is an enlarfred cross sectional vienY through the lino o'l" Figure und Fig. #5 is an enlarged cross sectional YViewl through the line G t3 of Figure fl.
Lilie charaetersy ot reference indicate oorA responding; parts in Vthe different views.
l is the bodyv portieri of the tool pro vided with the sidov plates and il respectively. 4t is a horizontal spirit level adiustal'iliY rnounted in the traine 5 inserted into the recess (5 in the bodj,7 portion l of the tool. The setting' of the level is adjusted by ineans of the setscrews T which are adapted lto engage the upper edge ot the level, said screws beine; threaded into the upper' portion of the 'trarne 5. 8 is the vertical spirit level ach'ustablv inounted in lthe recess 9 in the body portion or' the tool l. The setting of the level 8 is adjusted by means ot the setscrews l() threaded into the plate ll.
l2 is a plunib line recess having'the channel 13 communicating' therewith and extending to one end of the instrument, said recess and channel being situated in the bod);7 portioirlot the tool. le is e longitudinal groove in the outer `lace of the lever plate 2, said groove lying immediately above the channel 13 upon the Cover plate being epplied to the body portion l. l5 is aplumb line spool rotatably mounted in the recess l2 end having; the spindle 16 extending 1921. serial No. 169,636.
through the cover plate 2, the end oit said spindle being; provided with the handle l? bjr ineans of which the plumb line l@ reeled in or paid out.
19 is a recess in the bodj,v portion adapted to receive the plunib bob 2() and any other small tool such as Wrench 'lor adiustii'ig` the setserews 7 and l0. 2l is plumb bob recess cover plate slidahle in the eorer plate :2, said plumb boli recess @over plate norrnah .ly covering` the pluinb bob recess 19.
are scales on the cover plate EZ the oorer plate 3 being also provided with siniilar scales. 24 is a tape measure recess situated in the vicinity ot' one end of the body portion l and having` the channel 25 Communicating' therewith, said channel e);- tendingthrough the end oLt the bod)r pon tion l. 26 is the tape line proif'ided with the usual 2"? at the tree end thereof, said tape linepbeino' preferably ot" the spring' type which will reel in automaticull),7 when the end o't the line is released.
28 is a recess extending' itroni one end o the body portion Vl and adapted Vto recoii'e the movable arm 29 ot the square, said arm being suitably,7 hinged to the top wall oit the recess 2S and being' provided with the inclined end 3) adapted to engage the Vinclined Wall 3l oi1 such reeess when the arm extended iuto the position shown in. lillgure the inclinatlon oli said end 3() and said Wall fil being at itortyeive de rees.
32 is a slide nori'nally coveringa rr-,cess l in the intermediate portion ot the body portion l. said recess er' mding to the bottom oit the body portion.
3l Vis a liller strip adapted to close the reeess 323 when the slide hue; been slid into the position shown in Figure ft. are spiral springs interposed between the top wall o'll the recess and the illcr strip 36 are longitudinal tongues on the side 'laces oit' the slide 32. and 37 are longitudinal tongues on the side 'li'aces ol" the filler strip The tongues 3G are adapted to slide in slots 3S in the side walls oil the recess Q8 when the slide 232 is slid to the position shown in Figure t.
39 are apertures in the cover plate adapted to register with. the spirit levels and 8 when the Cover plate 2 is applied to the body portion l. 40 is a spirit level in the square arm 29.
The plumb line 18 when reeled in has its tree end. extending through the channel 13 about the end of the cover plate and alono' the groove 14t- (as shown .in Figure l), tie plumb bob being situated .in the recess 19 and such line lbeing held in place by the cover plate 21 extending across the Vgroove 14- (as 1s shown 1n Figure 1).
v pla-te 21 closed to the normal position shown in Figure 1.
' To use the tape measure it is merely necessary to pull out the line 2G by means of the 27 the required extent.
'In using the square it is only necessary to swing the arm 29 about the hinge al1 until the inclined end 30 engages the inclined wall 31 of the recess. The slide 32 is then slid along into the position shown in Figure 4l wherein the end thereof abuts the arm 29, when the springs 35 will force the filler strip 34 into the position shown in Figure 4, thus filling the recess To restore the square arm 29 to itsl closed position the ller strip Set is pressed down against the springs 35 and the slide 32 slid along to the position shown in Figure 2 when the arm 29 may be swung into the closed position as illustrated in Figure 2.
The spirit levels 1 and 8 are used identically as is the case with the ordinary level.
From the above description it will be seen that I have devised a simple andetlective conibination tool in which the workman will have a level, scale, plumb line, square and tape measure always at ha'nd. IIe will thus be saved the inconvenience of having touse each tool independently.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
1.
