I tanner PATENT orator...
RALPH NELSON DOBLE, OF BAY SIDE NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO STATE STREET TRUST COMPANY, TRUSTEE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A
CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
SLIDE-TOP @ONTAINER.
Application filed December 15, 1920. Serial No. 430,901 I To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that l, RALPH N. Donne, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bay Side, Long Island, borough of Queens,
State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slide-Top Containers, of which the following is a specification. 7
This invention relates to packaging conl0 tainers, and particularly to a container of such type having a delivery opening and a closure therefor whereby the contents of the package may be used. from time to time until exhausted, and the package closed at each time of using.
' In this type of device the matter of cost is obviously a considerable factor and it is therefore the object of my present invention to provide a packaging container capable of commercial roduction and use on an economic basis and yet equipped with a delivery afiording reliability of seal combined with convenience of use in opening and closing the package.
In. the accompanying drawings 1 have shown a preferred form of my invention which is well adapted to a great variety of goods and is capable of economical production and which may be conveniently handled in p the ordinary method of packaging.
Throu bout the specification and drawings 1 like re erence characters are employed to indicate corresponding parts, and in the drawin s: ig. I is a perspective view of a package in accordance with my invention with the delivery closed.
Fig. H is a similar view with the deliver open. v 40 ig. III is a section on the line III-HI,
Fi H, and
ig. IV is an enlarged plan view of the top of the container herein shown.
In accordance with my invention I may use any suitable form of container but preferably employ one such as is herein illustrated which consists of a carton member 1 having a flap bottom which may be conveniently sealed by external pressure in the 5 assembly of the carton.
After filling, the container mouth is closed by a cover 2 consisting'ofa top adapted to fit within the open mouth of the container 1 and having its margins turned upwardly which the contents of the and outwardly as indicated at 2 and clinched about the upper edges of the container Wall to hold it firmly in place. The upward and outward turn 2 is so formed as to give to the lateral inner edgesof the top 2 a slight overhang forming an angle along opposite sides. In this angle is guided a cover slide 4 having its edges t upturned so as to fit into and be held by overhang or acute angled wall 2 hi the to 2.
et through the top 2, preferably adjacent one corner thereof, is an aperture 5 constituting a delivery opening through package may be poured.
The closure t is preferably formed of thin sheet metal and on its rear edge has a flap 6 rolled up as a finger piece or bearing for shifting the closure 4: along the top to cover and uncover the pouring opening 5.
The upturned portions 4 and the finger 6 lie slightly below the marginal edges 2 2 of the top 2 andare thus protected against accidental dislodging movement.
Various modifications may be made in the details of my. package and in the parts thereof, all without departing from the spirit of my invention it within the limits of the appended claims.
What I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
a 1. In a packaging container an apertured top set below the upper edge of the container walls and having its margins clinched to the upper edges of said walls, two of said marginal portionsat opposite sides of the top being formed with an internal overhang disposed at an acute angle to the upper surface cf said top, and a slide member fitted within said top andcontrolling the delivery aperture thereof and having opposite edges upturned to fit within said overhang so as tobe guided and retained thereby. 1 p
2. In a packaging container, an apertured top set below the upper edge of the container walls and having its margins bent upwardly and outwardly to clinch the upper edges of said walls, two of said marginal portions at opposite sides of the top'being formed with an internal overhang forming an acute angle to the upper surface of said top,and a slide member fitted within said top and controlling the delivery aperture thereof and having opposite edges upturned to fit within the acute angle of said overhang so as to be guided and retained thereby.
the top being formed with an internal overhang forming an acute angle to the upper surface of said top, and a slide member fitted Within said top and controllingthe delivery aperture thereof, and having opposite edges upturned to fit within the acute angle of said overhang so as to be guided and retained thereby, and having an edge intermediate of said upturned edges formed as a finger piece.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. RALPH NELSON DOBL'E.
