. L. OVERBAUGH SPRINKLER NOZZLE Filed April 5. 1922 INVENTOR. LESL/E OVEEBAl/G/i ATTORNEY Patented Get. 30, 1923.
UNITED STATES LESLIE OVERBAUGH, or SAN DiiiGo, CALIFORNIA.
SPRINKLER NOZZLE.
Application filed April 5,
To all whomitmag concern. j
Be it known that I, LESLIE OVERBAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Sprinkler Nozzles, of which the followingis a specification.
. My invention relates to sprinkler nozzles, more particularly to nozzles of this class for lawn sprinkling purposes and the objects of my invention are: first, to provide a device of this class which is particularly adapted for sprinkling a spray of water into passage ways or corners, or sprinkling outwardly from said places; second, to provide a' device of this class which can be adjusted to discharge water in various quantities, directions and in various widths of sprays; third, to provide a device of this class which can be readily adjusted to produce sprays of varying fineness as desired; fourth, to pro vide a novelly constructed sprinkler nozzle, and fifth, to provide adevice of this'class which is very simple and economical of construction, durable, easily adjusted and installed and which will not readily'deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter my invention con sists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and port-ions as willbehereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my device secured to a water main buried beneath the lawn and shown part-1y in section to facilitate the illustration; Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the center of the sprinkler head of my device and Fig. 3 is a plan View of my device partly in section to facilitate the illustration showing by dotted lines various positions of the sprinkler adjusting member and also showing by dotted lines the respective widths 01' sectors of thesprays caused by the various positions of said sprinkler adjusting member.
Like characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings.
The sprinkler head 1, the sprinkler adjusting member 2, and the washer 3 consti- 1922. Seria1 No.549,7 55.
tute the principal parts and portions of my devicem "I I The sprinkler headl is provided with a central threaded hole l .in one end thereof adapted to receive the pipe nipple A connected to and communicating with a water main, and is also'provided with a reduced threaded hole 1 concentric with the former extending the remaining distance, therethrough and adapted to receivethe sprinkler adjusting member 2. I Said sprinkler head 1 is further provided with a semi-circular bevelled edge 1 extending outwardly from the hole 1 in a semi-cone shaped manner. The sprinkler adjusting member is cylindrical in shape and provided with external threads 2 adapted to engage the threads '1 of the sprinkler headyl as described above and is also provided with a concentrichole 2 ex tending therein from the inner 'endthereofr A narrow diagonal slot 2 is providednear the upper end of said sprinkler adjusting member communicating with the small cen tral hole '2 therein and with the exterior thereof substantially in line with the bevelled edge 1 of the sprinkler head 1. Said member 2;"is further provided with atransverseslot 2 atone end thereof adapted to be engaged by a screw driver for'adjusting the same with respect to head '1. A gasket washer 3 isinterposed bet'weenthe shoulder l within the member 1 and thefree'end of the nipple A .to insure a water-tight joint and further, to provide a means for frictionally engaging the adjusting member 2 and retaining the same in the various adjusted positions.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement but desire to include in the scope of my inven-, tionthe construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
It is obvious that the spray of water issuing from the nozzle is directly proportional to the longitudinal adjustment of the adjusting member 2with respect to the head 1 and also that the angular position of the member 2 with respect to the head 1 governs the width and the general direction of the spray issuing therefrom; as shown bydotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
said adjusting member by a narrow diagonal slot terminating at the upper edge of the sprinkler head and substantially in line with justing' member.
said edge.- 7 j 7 2. In a sprinkler nozzle, the combination with a supply 1ine,'of a sprinkler headprovided with a threaded hole adapted to receive the threaded end of said supply line and another threaded hole concentric with the former,a sprinkler adjusting member adj ustably secured in said last named'threaded hole of said sprinkler head, provided with a central hole extending therein from the inner end thereof and communicating with the exterior upper portion of said adjusting member by a narrow diagonal slot terminating at the upper edge of the sprinkler head and substantially in line with saidedge, and a gasket washer secured in the larger threaded hole of said sprinkler head against the shoulder provided therein by the different sized holes, adapted to frictionally engage the inner portion of said sprinkler ad- 3. In a device of'the class described, the combination with a supply line, of a sprinkler head provided with concentric threaded holes adapted to receive in'one of said holes cured in the other of said threaded holes in 7 said sprinkler head, provided with a central hole extendingtherein from the inner portion thereof and witha diagonal slot commuicating with said central hole substan tiallyin line with the bevelled edge of said sprinkler head and a means in connection with saidsprinkler adjusting member for adjusting the same with respect to said spjrinklerhead.
6i. In a device of the class described, the combination with asupply line, of a sprinkler head providedwith concentric threaded holes adapted to receive in one of said holes the external threaded end of the said supply line and further provided with a-bevelled inner edge at the tree portion thereof in an inverted substantially semi-conical shaped manner, a sprinkler adjusting member secured in the other of said threaded holes in said sprinkler head, provided with a central hole extending therein from the inner portion thereof and with a diagonal slot com municating with said central hole substantially in line with the beveled edge of said sprinkler head, a means in connection with said; sprinkler adjusting member for adj usting the same with respect to said sprinkler head, and-a means adapted to frictionally engage the said sprinkler adjusting member for retaining said member in various adjusted positions with said sprinkler head. V
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my .hand at San Diego, California this 30th day-ofMaroh, 1922. 1 i
, LESLIE OVERBAUGH.
