Description

1.w`. yWEBSTER.
Harvlesters.
No.147 208. Patented Feb. 3.1874.
PATENT YQEEIGE.
JOHN IV. VEBSTER, OF FLOYD, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,208, dated February 3, 1374; application filed u September 24, 1873.
To all whom 'it mag/concern.: Y
Be it known that I, JOHN lV. VEBSTER, of Floyd, in the county of Floyd and State of Iowa, havel invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Harvesters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists ia the construction and arrangement of three eudless aprons for carrying, elevating', and heading the grain, with the mechanism for operating the same, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my inventionappertains to make and use t-he same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the l annexed drawing, which forms a part ofthis speeication, and in which- Figiue l is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the operating mechanism, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the elevator-apron andthe additional third apron.
A represents the driving-wheel, upon the shaft or axle of which is a gear, a', connecting with a gear-wheel upon the shaft of a cog-4 are inclined, as shown. rIhe cog-wheel B gears with an intermediate or idle cog-wheel, (l, and
this with a cog-wheel, D, which is placed upon the journal of the lower roller for the elevatorapron J. Upon the opposite journal of this roller is a pulley, L, connected by a belt, M, with a pulley, N, `on the journal of the lower roller for the apron II. rIhe cog-wheel I) gears with an intermediate or idle cog-wheel, E, and this with a cog-wheel, F, which is placed upon the journal of the inner roller for the apron I By means of the cog-gearing, as described, and the belt M, the three aprons I, J, and H are revolved in the proper directions, the third apron Hdelivering the grain to the wagon for the purpose of heading grain when it is so ripe that it cannot be tied in bundles. The gearing B O l) E F is inclosed within a metal casing, K, to prot-ect the same from dirt, dust, &c. This casing will usually be made of one piece of cast metal having a back, to which. the gearing is secnred, and a rim which extends entirely around the wheels. It is firmly bolted onto the horizontal frame 'carrying the apron I, and to the upright frame carrying the apron J, thus forming a firm brace for holding the two frames together, in addition to its forming a shield and securing-plate for the gearing. On the cog-wheel B is a wrist-pim'a, with a pitman, (l, attached for running the sickle-bar.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to ysecure by Letters Patent, is
rIhe combination of the aprons I J, the metallic casin g K, secured to the two frames earrying said aprons, and the gearing B CJ) E F, all constructed to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
