RELEASING DEVICE.
Application filed June 28, 1920. Serial No. 392,607.
T 0 (ZZZ iii/lam it may concern.
Be it known that I, KARL STAX-IL, a citia zen ot Germany, residing at Friedrichshaten, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Releasing Devices (for which I have tiled application in Germany September 19, 1917), of which the As is well known, all bodies, such as,
bombs 01' ballast, which are designed tobe thrown olt from aircraft, must bekept per tectly safe in a closed space, whilst, on the I other hand they must be instantly discharged, it necessary, in order to obtain the. desired result.
The releasing device according to the present invention complies with all these requirements and is simple in construction, can easily be mounted, requires very little space and is perfectly reliable in operation.
The device according to the present in vention is provided with a casing having two slits arranged in different planes prel erably vertically disposed with relation to one another. In one 01 these slits an oscillating lever is movably disposed which, is capable of crossing the other slit with an arm of sectonshatt. Both the external and internal surfaces of the arm, which is provided near the axis of rotation of the lever, extend at least approximately concentrically to the said axis, the external surface moving in corresponding abutments oi": the easing, whilst the internal surface serves For the reception of the load.
In order to render the manufacture and the mounting of the device especially simple, I prefer providing a casing consisting of two slotted plates, which are disposed at a certain distance from each other so as to embrace the oscillating lever and are rigidly connected with each other, an abut-- ment for the sector-shaped arm being further provided.
In the accompanying drawing a diagrammatic view of a device embodying my invention is illustrated.
Fig. 1 being a lateral view of the device and Fig. 2 a vertical section on line 22 in Fig. 1.
Two plates A, bent in their upper portions a and each provided in their lower,
portions with a vertical slit a are riveted together at the bent surfaces, so as to form clamps, which are open at theirends. Within the space thus formed, the upper end B of a lever B, the axis of rotation of which is secured below the bent portion a but above the vertical slits a is free to oscillate.
acrossthe central part of the cross-slit pro duced by the openings a The internal surface 6- of the lever-arm 5 serves for the reception of a hook C. Theext-ernal surface 7r ot the lever-arm, which lies concentrically to the internal surface 5 and to the of rotation of the lever, rests with its ends against two abutments D D provided between the plates A. These abutments, together with a third abutment D serve as spacers for the plates A. The abutments D D act as stops for the end positions of the lever, which in its part B outside the casing A essentially consists of a tube.
In the device shown in the drawings, the release is securely fixed between two rails provided in the framep'f an aircratt. l Vhere such rails are not at disposal, the device may be fixed by means of an eye (a and some ropes Gr between the said eye and the frame, so that it is free to oscillate, since it is practically of no importance whether the oscillating axis of the swinging load is arranged in the upper part of a stationary cross-slit (1 or whether the device as a whole oscillates around the point of attack of the rope ties. For the quick disengagement of the swinging lever, an oscillating suspension of the complete device ofi'ers no diliiculty, since the device does not materially change its position under the action of the weight, it the oscillating lover is moved in the sense of the release.
If the internal surface Ff or" the lever arm 5 is arranged perfectly concentrically to the axis of rotation of lever B, the suspension of the load takes place with indifferent equilibrium. To ensure a greater safety if, for the purpose of a quick release, the splint- E should be removed, a safe arrangement of parts can be provided by bending the 1n ternal surl'ace b of the lever-arm b to- The end B of the lever is provided with an arm 5 of sectorshape, which, in "the locked position shown, forms abridge wards its free end. If thelever B is to be released, the load must be slightly lifted corresponding to the increased curvature of the surface 5 before the lever-arm 72 leaves the cross-slit a and releases the hook C.
Claims:
1. In a device of the kind described in combination, a narrow casing open on one side, a rocking lever pivoted to the upper part of said casing and extending outwards through the open side thereof, an arm on said lever extending substantially at right angles therefrom through part of said casing, and indentures in the casing walls extending in parallel from the bottom up-.
wards, said arm crossing said indentures at adistance from their upper ends, .so as to serve as a support for the load;
2. In a device of the kind described in combination, a narrow casing open on one side, a rocking lever pivoted to the upper part of said casing and extending outwards through the. open side thereof, an arm on said lever extendingsubstantially at right angles therefrom through part of said casmg substantially concentrically to the pivotof said lever, and indentures in the casing Walls extending in parallel from the bottom upwards, sald arm crossing sa1d 1ndentures at a dlstance from their upper ends so as to serve as a supportfor the load.
3. In a device of the kind described in combination, a narrow casing, open on one side, a rocking lever pivoted to the upper part of said casing and extending outwards I through the open side thereof, an arm on said lever extending substantially at right angles therefrom through part of said casing, indentures in the casing walls extending in parallel from the bottom upwards, said arm crossing said indentures at a distance from their upper. ends so as to serve as a support for the load, and an abutment 1n said distance from their upper ends so as to serve as a support for the load. In testimony whereof I allix my signature.
