Description
UNITED STATES JOSEPH L NDERSON, OF'll'lOUNT PLEASANT, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TANNING PROCESSES.
Sptcification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,742, dated January 27,1874; application filed May 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concjrn:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH ANDERSON, of Mount Pleasant, \Vestmoreland county, Penn sylvania, have invented a certain Compound for Tanning Leather, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an lmprovement in tanning leather by the use of saturating-oils,
in combination with tanning materials, by the following process:
To make the saturating-oils, take three parts cod, castor, olive, or any other of the oils in use among tanners; to either otthese add one part turpentine.
First apply the saturating-oils to the green hides, afterbeing prepared by the usual method for tanning. For twenty-five hides, or one hun dred calf-skins, take three gallons of saturating mixture, and handle the green hides therewith the mixture, as at the first, renewing the tan-liquor, until the hides are sufficiently tinned. Leather intended for harness or belt, in g, after the second oil-saturatin g and wheelhandling would be greatly improved by the usual method of laying away, as practiced by tanners generally. By the oil-saturating process, in combination with tan stronger tanliquor may be applied to the green hides from the first, and thereby the following results are obtained over the ordinary methods of tanning leather, viz: \Vhile the middle or glutinous parts of the hide are being penetrated with tan, the grain or fibrous parts of the hide are keptsoft and pliable throughout the process of tan n in g.
I claim as my invention The method of tanning leather by saturating the green hides or skins with the mixture described, and repeating it d1 rln g the tanning process, as set forth. r
JOSEPH ANDERSON.
