IMPROVEMENT IN MAGAZINE FIRE-ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,611, dated January 20, 1874; application filed November 1, 1873.
To all u-hom it may concern:
De it known that we, FRANK I). PEACE, of Marysville, in the county of Blount and State ot' Tennessee, and JAMES W. D. WILLIAMS, ot' Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State ot' Tennessee, have invented a new and usei'ul liuprovement in Breech-Loading Fire- Arms, oi which the following1 is a specifica tion:
Uur invention consists ot' a magazine-cham her ou ea'eh side of the barrel with a transversely-reciprocating block behind them for taking the cartridges from said chambers alternately and presenting them to the barrel, also for removing the shells to a discharger, said bleek being worked by a crankshaft and connecting-rod set in motion by a triggerwheel, which is turned far enough each time it is pulled for tiring to effect one movement ot the block, which brings the cartridge into position just before the hammer falls.
The object is to provide a simple and eilieieut repeating arm which can be loaded and iii-od simply by pulling the trigger.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation ot' our improved gun on the line x of Fig. L. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a trout elevation. Fig. 4 is a cross-section ou tho line y y of Fig. 1, looking toward the muzzle; and Fig. 5 is a cross-section on the sume line looking toward the breech.

We have a chamber, a, on each side of the barrel l), for containing cartridges, with a sp1-ing for forcing them down into the doublei-lmmhcrod block E, which is to slide iirst one way and then the other to receive the eartrid ges alternately1 from the opposite chambers and present them to the barrel, removing the tired shell at the same time. The block is to be shifted by the trigger C, which nets upon said block through the medium of wheels A B, disk D, and connecting-rod J. 'lhe trigger, turning wheel A, turns B, and B turns l), which is connected by the rod J with the sliding block E, said rod being connected to the disk at b. The block slides back and forth at each revolution of the pitman wheel or disk D. The holes in the block exactly correspond with the holes in the chambers and the barrel; also, with one of the holes in block I. The holes in block I receive the discharged cartridges, which are pushed into them by the cartridges entering block E, and which, by means of a weak spring, g, in the bottom of the holes, are discharged through the hole L in plate K.
The trigger C touches hammer F precisely at the same time that cog-wheel A touches cog-wheel B, causing it to strike needle Gr, which works through the small hole in the center of block I and res the cartridge H, which is brought into position just before the hammer strikes. The barrel has a joint at M, on which it swings when the plate N, which is hinged at O, is raised, said plate being held down by swing-catches P. Another plate, Q, similarly hinged on the top, affords access to the working parts for taking the gun apart and putting it together as readily as a common gun can be loaded.
The loading and firing are eiected merely by the pulling of the trigger.
In this example a coiled spring, R, is represented as the mainspring; but it will probably in practice be changed for the ordinary flat sprin g.
Ve shall probably have some little cut-ott' devices attached, so as to be adjusted to keep the discharged shells in the discharger when the gun is not to be vfired, to prevent the-can tridges from being presented to the barrel by the pulling of the trigger. And we shall probably have some small springs attached to the sliding block for preventing the cartridges from being driven into the barrel by the hammer without being fired. And we shall also have a little plate or plates between the breech-block and the shifting-block to prevent the cartridges from going back int-o the dischargers before the iirst fire, in case the dischargers be empty, said plate or plates to be removed after the rst fire.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of two chambers, a, a
