To azlrwhom itlmaycancerous 1 I i "Be it knownthat I, I'IARRYICI Hoo is'riin- 'rnn, a citizeirot the United States, residing in the city iand: county of Philadelphia,
Other Thread, of specification. 1
State of. ,-Pennsylvania, have invented new and usefulliolders vfor Dental Floss and wh ch the following s a My invention consists of a devicel forholding dental floss, silk or Otherthread, the same embodying means for holding the thread tightly on the stockotthe device.
Theinvention issatisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing,';but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to *t-hespecifiedetails shown and described, as long as they are within thespirit or scope of the claims.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a device for holding dental floss or other thread embodying my invention.
Figure 2 represents a central longitudinal section thereof.
Figure 4 represents a transverse section on' line 4- 1 Figure 3, on an enlarged scale. 7
' nates a tubular body on the forward end of which latter is the. head 3 which is connected; with the rear end of said stock, said body" being adapted to contain floss, or silk thread 4; as the holder therefor which may be wound on a spool or quill 5 in said body, said body being also adapted to form the handle of the device. In the present instance, the stock is of conical form and the body of cylindrical form.
In the wall of said body is an opening 6 and inthe adjacent portion of the wall of said stock is the opening 7 whereby the silk may be drawn from the holder through said openings into said stock and so brought to the discharge end 8 of the stock 1.
9 designates a swinging arm which overhangs the exterior of the stock and has its rear end pivotally connected with the rear permits motions of said arm on said axis to and from the stock. 7 w
Connected with said arm at its axis is the Figure 3"represents a side elevation there- 7 contacts with'the end of-the floss, silk, thread andQforcesthelsame against the bore of the stock and thus tightly holds said; end.
Connected with the arm 9Iat its axis "is I the finger-piece 13 which overhangs the. ex,-
"terioroft-the body 2 and; forms a leverx for operating said arm to? andirom theistock eye lwhichis so located in relation to 'the discharge endof thestock lgas to receive 7 the length of. thread thatis passed fromfthe stock .to the arm and form} the bridge 150i thread which will be employedlto beiinserlted between. teeth. and cleanse the same which is the object or" the thread.
In the end of the arm 9 adjacent to the recess 11 is the eye 16 through which the thread is passed and from whence it enters said recess and consequently the bore of the stock. 7 r
It will be seen that when the thread is'run rom the holder and passed through the stock, it leaves the discharge end of the latter and is directed to the arm 9 and 'ree'ved when it is passed under the cam 12,the arm belng properly manipulated by outward vcam 12 whichentei's' the rear ,endotthe stock 101111111g an-elbow with saidj arm and ;and moving thecam 12 toand from the-end 7S5 through the eye 14 from which it is extended grearward along said arm, and its end is directed throughthe eye 16 into the recess. 11 and from thence into the bore of the stock movement of the finger piece 13 to permit such disposition of the thread. Then the finger piece is moved towards the body 2 when the end of the thread contiguous to. the cam isclamped by :the latter against the bore of the stock and is there interlocked and the thread is stretched and tightened and thusthe bridge 15 is rendered taut for eflicient service on the teeth. After the thread is disposed in operative form on the device, it will be noticed that the threadhas a bite in the openings 6 and 7 and so cannot be run ofi-from the holder and as the end of the thread in the stock is clamped by the cam the thread isprevented from shiftin and so the bridge preserves its position an tautness. V the finger piece 13 is moved outwardly from the body 2, thus releasing the thread in such manner that the thread runrfrom the body When a fresh bridge is desired is loosened when it may be removed and cut the axial end of said arm, a cam on said axial-end, and 'anabutmentin the bore of said stock for the thread which. is engaged by said cam. I
--ried by said stock.
2. In a holder for thread of the character stated, a tubular stock, a guiding arm,- an
' axis therefor, a handle lever extended from the axial end of said arm, a cam on said axial end, an butment 1n the bore of said stock for the thread which is engaged by said cam, and a container for thread car- In a holder for thread of the character stated, a tubular stock, a guiding arm, an axis therefor, a handle lever extended from the axial end of said arm, a cam on said axial end, an abutment in the bore of said stock for the thread which is engagedby said cam, and a container for thread carried by said stock, said cam belng rigid with said lever adJacent said axis.
4. In a holder for thread of the character stated, a container for thread, a tubular stock connected therewith in which the thread may be directed, a swinging arm on said stock, said arm having an'eye which is adjacent to the discharge end of said stock, a 1everlike .inember for operating said arm, and a cam-like member on said member Within said stock adapted to engage the end of the thread and interlock the same.
5. In a'holder for thread, a thread holder,"
the thread, a swinging device for distending the thread and forming a bridge of the thread in the length thereof, and a camlil're locking Jnember in'said guide adapted to engage thefree end of the thread there- 7 in, said guide having ini'ts wall a recess through which the thread may be directed to said locking member.
