V r vulva-GAGE FULLER,
Appfication filed October s,'1e21.' Serial No. 506,311.
To all whom it may cow/061%."
Be itknown that we, JOHN L. CUNNING- HAM and Mjxmaicn D. VVHALEN, citizens of the United States, and residents of Cresco, in the county of Howard and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Valve-Cage Pullers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a valve cage puller.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character by which the valve cage of the type employed for overhead valves in internal combustion engines may be lifted or pulled in an expeditious manner and without injury.
It is also an object of the invention that the device be simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and objects relating. to details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts will hereinafter appear in the detailed description to follow.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view illustrating the application of the invention,
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view illustrating the structure of the puller stand or support, and
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Referring to the drawings more particularly, 10 indicates generally a portion of a cylinder which is formed with the usual ledge 11. The cylinder is equippedwith overhead valves one of which is shown in detail. The valve shown comprises a cage 12 adapted to seat the valvemember 13. The valve member 13 has the usual stem 14 which passes through the sleeve 15. Also there is shown the usual coil spring 16, washer 17 and lock nut 18.
In carrying outthe invention there is provided the tubular member 19 which is formed 'with a slot 20 extending longitudinally thereof from a point intermediate its ends to a point adjacent its upper end; and each edge of the slotis formed with a series of notches 21. Arod 22 is slidably fitted in the upper end thereof, said'rod carrying a pin 23 adjacent its lower end adapted to be brought into engagement with either of the "notches 21 for adjusting the rod-22 with respect to thetube 19. The upper end of the rod 22 is formed with a bifurcated head as at 2 1 and letween the bifurcations there is pivoted or fulcrumed a lever bar 25 by the means of a pin 26. Also the bar is provided with the openings 26 by which the point of fulcrum may be adjusted.
The lever bar 25 is ,fulcrumed adjacent its forward end and its rear end portion is shaped to serve as a handle as at 27 while its forward end terminates in a hook 28. To the hook 28 there is connected a swivel 29 which pivotally supports the two links 30. To the lower end of each link 30 there ispivotally connected a handle 31 of the pincers 32, the jaws 33 of the pincers being adapted for engaging the valve stem 14.
In the operation of the present device the same is positioned as in Figure 1, and the rod or stem 22 adjusted so the lever bar 25 will have the proper height. Previous to this, however, the lock nut 18 should be removed so that the cage 12 is free to be lifted. By downward pressure upon the handle portion 27 of the lever bar 25, the cage may be raised in an easy and expeditious manner.
We claim 2- 1. In a device of the character described, a tubular supporting member having a longitudinally extending slot in its upper end portion with a plurality of notches formed in each of the edges forming said slot, a stem slidably extending into the upper end of the tubular support, and a pin carried by said stem and extending laterally therefrom adapted to be brought to engage in said notches whereby said stem may be adjustably raised and lowered.
2. In a lifting device of the character described, a supporting tubular member having a longitudinally extending slot in an upper end portion thereof, said slot having notches formed upon its edges which occur in alternate relation, a stem slidable into the upper end portion of said tubular member, a pin extending laterally from said stem and adapted to be engaged in any of said notches whereby to adjustably raise and lower said stem.
3. In alifting device of the character described, a tubular supporting member having an upper end portion thereof formed with a longitudinally extending slot, said slot being closed at each of its ends and having ormedq vniwh 0f it zed -p u a ity of no.tches,..a stem sliclable within the upper end portion Of said tubular member, and a 12in zitendin a eral from sa d demand adapted to -be brought to engage any of said notches whereby the stem may be-adjustably raised and lowered.
4. In a lifting device of the character described, a tubular support having its one end portion formed with a slot, said slot being c sed at.i ac;h. .o iits nd an iha ing ie chvfaw dges f rmed wi a plurality .of
notches, a stem slid able Within the upper end po io Qfis tubul supp rt, a P
