Bowns, J12, citizens of the United States, and residents. respectively, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, and Pensacola, in the county of Escambia and State of Florida, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Closure Members for Liquid Gontainers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to a construction for forming a closure to a receptacle, which receptacle is adapted to contain a fluid substance.
The device is particularly adapted for use as a closure for a hot water bottle, inasmuch as the closure construction forms an efiicient and effective seal for preventing any leakage of water pastthe closure;
It is very well known that considerable diflicultyis experienced in the use oi hot water bottles due to the fact thatthe water contained within the container of the hot water bottle will leakaround the closure causing considerable annoyance and for this reason being very undesirable.
The present arrangement provides a sealing arrangement for the closure which in effect is a double seal, and additionally the construction is so arranged that the water which would contact with the inner part of the closure member causes an expansion of the gasket which is associated with theclosure member and effecting thereby a more effective packing action of the gasket.
lfVhile reference herein will be largely made to a hot water bottle construction it will be understood that the invention is not confined in this particular, but is applicable wherever the desired characteristics. of a closure construction which is herein described are applicable. 7
Reference should be had-to the accompanying drawings forminga .part of this specification, in which Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation showing the construction of the invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing a part of the closure construction Fig.
3 is a sectional elevation o f-a portion of the closure structure; Fig. 1 15a front elevation of the removable portion of the closure in Fig. 1 there is shown a portion of a fluid container such as a so-called hot water bottle, which has the fluid containing portion or body which is indicated at 1, and this body is usually provided with a neck 2 and an outwardly flaring portion 3 which assists in directing water into the interior of the body. In the neck there is a filler member t which is provided with a central opening and located in the central opening is a thimble 5 which at its upper and lower ends is provided with outwardly extending flanges 5 that serve to hold the thimble within the opening in the filler member 4.
This thimble 5 is provided with two or more partial threads such as indicated at 6 and '7 which are used in advancing the stopper member into its final or tight position. It will be found convenient to make the thimble member 5 out of pressed metal and when this is done the partial threads 6 and 7 may be pressed into the body of the thimble in a manner which will be understood to those familiar with the art.
The upper part of the thiinble 5 is substantially cylindrical in form, while the lower portion of the thimble is made slightly tapering as indicated at 8. The purpose of this will be subsequently described.
The stopper proper comprises a body portion 9 which is substantially cylindrical in shape and on thisbody portion there are carried two oppositely disposed outstanding lugs. one of which is represented at 10. This lug 10 is tapered and a companion tapered lug is carried by the body at exactly the opposite portion thereof. These lugs 10 are adapted to engage with the threads 6 and 7 and by a slight turning movement will advance the stopper into the thimble 5.
Above the cylindrical portion which has just been described there is an outstanding flange 11 which is adapted to overlie and engage with the upper flange 5 of the thimble in the manner clearly indicated in F 1.
Extending from the cylindrical portion 9 .is another cylindrical portion 12 of less diameter than the portion 9 and at the inner end of the portion 12 is a flat plate member 13, the diameter of which is greater than that of the portion 12. The stopper member may be formed of pressed metal theistopper 9, 12 and 13 are integrally formed or whether they are separately forme'd and "secured together.
I Preferably the projections such as repre sented at 10 will be formed in the pressing operation which forms the portion 9. The construction which has above been described forms in eiii'ecta recess or groove below the cylindrical portion 9 of the stopper and this groove is occupied by a gasket member which is generally represented at 14; in Fig. 1.
This gasket member is preferably made of rubber and comprises abodyportion l l with depending lips 14" and 14 and these lips on their inner surfaces are tapering, while the outer surfaces or each of the lips is suliistantially cylindrical. These lips taper to substantially a feather edge and the outer lip 14 has its lower edge extending just slightly beyond the edge of the portion I3 of the stoppen hen the gasket is mounted on the stopper member the outer surface of the inner lip 14* lies against the wall of the portion 12 of the stopper while the outer surface or the lip 14 is free to engage with the innerwall of the thimblc 5. VVhen the stopper is inserted within the thimble 5, the cylindrical portion 9 will have a snue fit within the u 3 )er 0 lindrical portion of the thimble 5 and as the stopper is advanced into the thimble, particularly by giving the stopper a turning; movement so that the projections 10 will advance Within the threads and 7, and gasket will engage with the tapered portion of the thimble, and inasmuch as the upper portion 14 of the gasket is rather thick there will be a compression of this portion of the gasket due to its engagement with the taperedwall ot the th'imble This construction forms in effect a packing.
As before stated, when the stopper is inserted in the thimble 5, the lower edge of the lip 14 lies just beyond the edge of the lower portion 13 of the stopper when in the course of using: the bottle the same may be tipped so that water or other fluid in the container is brought into, contact with the gasket, this fluid will find its way into the recess between the lips of the gasket and the pressure of the liquid will more firmly press the outer lip 14 into contact with the inner surface of the thimble 5. This will in effect form a second packing".
Attention is called to the fact that all' of the foregoing resultsmay be acco'm- 1 p'lished by nivinf the stopper not greater than a halt a turn when. the stopper is in sorted, which is acon'si'derable advantage over usual constructions wherein" the stop per'must be given a number of turns before it is seated. I
Having described 0hr invention, we claim: 1; In a device of the character described, the combinationwith a member having in part a substantially cylindrical" inner wall and in part atapering wall, of a stopper body adapted for insertion within said memher said stopper body having a groove, a gasket within said, groove, said gasket havinga thickened body portion and a depending outer wall, the thickened portion of the gasket being engaged and compressed by the tapering portion of the said member when the stopperis inserted and the said depending wall lying in engagement with the said tapered portion of the said member. In a device of the character described, the combination with amember having; an inner wall,- the upper portion of which is cylindrical and the lower portion of which is tapered, of a stopper adapted for insertion within said member, said stopper having a cylindrical portion adapted to fit within the cylindrical portion of the said. member, a gasket carried by the stopper, said gasket having an upper portion of thickened rubber and a depending outer wall portion whichis relatively thinner, the said thickened portion of the gasket engaging with the upper art of the said member and the said oh or wall of the gasket engaging with the tapering portion of the said member.
3. Ina device of the character described. the combination'with a member having an inner wall, the upper portion of which is cylindrical, the lower portion of which is conical, of a stopper member having" a cylindrifcal portion adapted to extend in substantial fit with the cylindrical portionot gaslret being relatively thick at the upper portion and having a freely depending outer wall, the thickened portion of the i gasket being; compressed by the conical wall when the stopper is seated and the freelv depending wall lying contact with the conical portion of said member.
4. In a device of the character described the combination with a member having an inner wall, the upper portion of which is substantially cylindrical and the lower portion of whichis substantially conical, a
stopper member having a portion which is substantially cylindrical and adapted to nicely fit withinthe cylindrical portion of said menses-J the said stopper having a groove below the cylindrical portion thereof, a gaslret in said groove, said gasket having a thickened portion at the upper end thereof and having" a freely depending; wall with an open space behind the said wen,
the said thickened portion of the gasket being compressed by the conical wall when the stopper is seated and the depending wall of the gasket lying in contact with the said conical portion of the member.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a member having an inner wall, the upper portion of which is substantially cylindrical and the lower portion'of which is conical, of a stopper adapt ed for insertion in said member, said stopper having a cylindrical portion which is adapted to nicely fit within the cylindrical portion of the said member, the stopper being provided with a groove beneath the cylindrical portion, a U-shaped gasket occupying said groove, the upper portion of the gasket being relatively thick and said gasket having spaced outer and inner walls, the outer wall being freely depending, the said thickened portion of the gasket being adapted to be engaged and compressed by the conical portion of the said member and the freely depending wall portion of the gasket engaging with the conical portion of said member.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a member having an inner surface which at one part is substantially cylindrical and below that is slanting, the said cylindrical surface having oppositely disposed slanting grooves formed therein, of a stopper having a cylindrical portion which is provided with oppositely disposed extensions which are adapted to engage in the said grooves to advance the stopper into the said member when the stopper is turned, said stopper being provided with a groove below the cylindrical portion thereof, a gasket within said groove said gasket having a thickened upper portion and a depending outer wall which engages with the slanting wall portion of the first mentioned member.
