COLLAPSIBLE BUCKET.

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. STEPHENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Buckets, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said invention is the provision of a collapsible bucket designed more especially for use in an automobile as part of the equipment thereof.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a diametrical section showing my novel bucket as collapsed and closed.
Figure 2 is an elevation Showing the bucket extended and with the cover removed so that the bucket is in readiness for use.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the collapsed bucket.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Among other elements my novel bucket comprises a plurality of tapered annular sections 1 and 2, the said sections being formed of aluminum or other appropriate material, and the lower section 2 being permanently fixed at its lower end with respect to a base section 3 which forms the bottom of the bucket. The lower annular section 2 is tele scopically arranged in the intermediate annular section 1, and the intermediate annular section 1 is telescopically arranged in the uppermost annular section 1 so that the bucket can be expeditiously and easily extended or contracted as shown in Figures 2 and 1. It will also be observed that the uppermost section 1 is provided at diametrically opposite points in its upper edge with apertures 4 for the connection of a handle 54. The base section 3 of the bucket is extended considerably beyond the lower end of the sect-ion 2 and is provided with a marginal flange 5. The said marginal flange 5 depends from the major portion of the base section 3 and is therefore adapted to hold the bucket off the ground. It will also be observed that the flange 5 is circumferentially Serial No. 532,274..
grooved as indicated by 6 to receive the pendent clamps 7 on the cover 8 which is of a size to fit over'the uppermost annular section 1. Manifestly when the cover 8 is arranged over the uppermost annular section 1 and the clamps 7 are snapped into the groove 6, the cover will serve effectively in excluding dust and dirt from the interior of the bucket and at the same time will detachably hold the bucket in the collapsed state in which it will occupy but little room in an automobile. It will also be manifest that the clamps 7 by the application of little stress to the cover 8 may be removed from the groove 6 so as to release the cover 8 whereupon the cover may be removed and the bucket extended for use.
In this connection it will be noticed that the said cover 8 has a circumferential enlargement at its top which constitutes a convenient hand hold. I
The handle 54: is preferably made of chain with a hook 52 on each end to take into the apertures 4. When deemed expedient the handle may be and preferably is remov-- able.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that my novel bucket while simple and inexpensive in construction is calculated to be highly useful particularly when used as part of an automobile equipment.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire. however, to be understood as confining myself to the said specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications may be made such as fall within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, 1s:
