Description

Aug. 7, 1923.
A. GRAMOWSKI CHIMNEY AND PIPE CLEANER Filed March 29. 1922 Patented Aug.. 7, 19223o ,Y ai li a anni ANTHONY GRAMDWSKI,
titane CLEANER.
Application filed March 29, 1922. Serial No. 547,328.
To @ZZ eri/wm. t may concern:
Be it known that l, ANTHONY GnAMowsnI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joseph, in the countyroil Buchanan, State ot' lriissouri, have invented a new and useful Chimney and Pipe leaner; and l do hereby declare the followingL to be a full, clear, and e yact description oi the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.
The invention relates to'fizl'iiinney and pipe cleaners and has tor its object to provide a. device of this character comprising` substantially cylindrically shaped sleeves, the ends ot' which are overlapped the outer sleeve being* provided with brushing elements adapted to engage the inner periphery of a chimney or pipe for iilislodginn' soot or the like. Also to provide turn buckle means -for expandingY and contracting the device thereby allowing the same to be adjusted `for different size chimneys or pipes.
A further object is to provide a weight suspended from the lower turn buckle `tor forming;` means for pulling the device downwardly in a chimney or the like and to provide cable means connected to the upper turn. buckle forming means whereby the device. may be pulled upwardly in a chimney or the like.
W ith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it beingunderstood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departingfrom the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings:-
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the device.
Fig-ure 2 is a top plan view. y Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view through a modiiied form of cleaner, showing; the same in a stove pipe and the handle thereof extending` through a plate.
lte'lierringi to the drawings. the numeral 1 designates a cylindrically shaped member having its ends overlapped as at 2 thereby allowingthe cylindrical member to be eX- panded and contracted by means of the turn buckles 3 which are secured at 11 in opposite walls oi the cylindrical member 1. It will be seen that the turn buckle 3 when revolved on the threaded roda 5 will; cause the cylin drical member 1 to either be expanded or contracted according to the direction `oit rotation ot the tu ing` the device to be adjusted iger .use in connection with df i' and pipes, lrictiona peripherv G oi the eylnd..V contracting' sleeve Y, whichsli dially disposed tutte of wire 3. which engage the wall of the chimney or pipe and dislodge soot and the like.
Suspended from collars carried by the lower threaded rods 5 by means ci wires 10 whichare connected at 11 to the collars 9 is a weight l2, which is axially disposed in relation to the cylindrical member 1 and forms means in connection with the weight oit the device Yfor pulling the device `downwai i y through a chimney or pipe. The device is moved upwardly by means ot a cable 13 which is connected to collars 14lcarried by the upper threaded rod 5, through the medium ot wires lt will be seen that the device may be reciprocated in a chimney or pipe by allowing the weight 12 to pull the device downwardly and the operator pulling the device upwardly by means ot' the Cable 13.
Referring to Figure 3 wherein a moditied Yform is shown, the brushingr element 15 is disposed in a stove pipe 17 and is carried by a handle 1S by means of which handle the brushing handle may be reciprocated for cleaning the interior wall of the stove pipe. lt has been found during` a stove pipe cleaning operation that soot as it is dislodged by a reciprocating brush is forced outwardly from one end of the pipe incident to the pumping` action. To obviate this diiiiculty7 a disc shaped member 19 is provided ior engaging' in the end of the pipe and through an aperture 2O in which disc the handle 1S passes. The disc 19 is provided witha handie 21, whereby it may be easily handled and held during the pipe cleaningoperation.
From the above it will be seen that chimney and pipe cleaner is providedE which device is simple in construction, may be atjusted to various diameters of chimneys or pipes and may be easily manufactured.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A chimney cleaning device comprising an eXpansible cylindrical member, parallel cinq the outer member 1 is a carries radisposed turn buckles connectingthe op-po y .site walls of said cylindrical member ...d
forming mea-ns whereby it may be expanded or contracted, and a contractible brush carrying sleeve ,surrounding the cylindrical member and engaging the outer periphery thereof.
2. A chimney cleaning device comprising a split cylindrical member, turn buckles disposed with-in the cylindrical member and connected to the opposite walls thereof and .forming means whereby the cylindrical member may be expanded .or contracted, a contracting sleeve surrounding the cylindrical member, brusl'ingelements carried by said contracting sleeve, a weight suspended from one of the turn buckles and axially disposed in relation tothe cylindrical member and forming means lfor pulling the -device downwardly and means connected to the .other turn buck-le yand forming means whereby the device may be pulled upwardly.
3. A chimney cleaning ,device comprising a split eXpansible sleeve, turn buckles for expanding and contracting said sleeve, a split contractible brush carrying sleeve fric- Yt'ionally'engaging the periphery of the irst r,end of the device and a Cable connected te the upper end of the device,
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
