IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY ATTACHMENTS FOR POCKET-BOOKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,411, dated January 13, 1874 application tiled June 14, 1873.

To all lwhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN TROUT, of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement .in Pocket-Books, of which the following is a specification The first part of my invention consists of a long Hap a little wider than the length of banknotes, with one or more elastic straps or cords extending across from edge to edge ou the inside, and attached at their ends to the edges of the iap to secure the bank-notes, which. are to be placed under the straps, and then rolled or folded up in the iap. The second part consists of a safety-fastening for attaching the book to the clothing, so as to retain it in case of an attempt to pick it out of the pocket, the said fastening being a notched stud-pin projecting from a base-plate attached to the clothing, and passing through a plate on the book,

behind which is a springcatch engaging the said notched pin, so as to hold it until released by pushing the catch out of the notch by a thumb-bit provided for the purpose. The fastening is also applicable for securing other pocket articles-for instance, knives and the like.

Figure 1 is a plan View of the open pocketbook, showing the elastic bands for retaining the bills. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the book folded up and the fastening device. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of. Fig. 2, taken on the line y y; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a pocket-knife with my improved fastening device applied to it.

A represents the long iiap or sheet of leather, such as commonly used for securing bank-bills by laying them upon the inside of it crosswise,

in one or more packs or piles, and securingthem inthe folds by folding. said sheet or flap between the packs or piles. To this sheet orflap I propose to attach elastic bands or straps B by sewing or otherwise fastening the ends of the strap to the edges of theap, at intervals of about the width of the bills, as shown in. the drawing, in order to secure the bills better by placing them un der said bands. They stretch sufficiently to properly secure large packs of bills, and contract enough to secure smallpaoks, also. C represents the notched projection of the safetyholder; D, the plate to `which it is attached, and by which it is secured to the clothing. E represents plates on the book,

through which the projection passes to engage it with the book, and F is the spring-catch to engage the notched projection C, and thereby secure the book. H, Fig. 4, represents a pocketknife with my safety-fastening connected to it by the projection entering a socketin the handle, inside of which the spring-catch is arranged.

I represents the thumb-bit by which the spring# catch is withdrawn.

The attaching-plate D may be sewed on the clothing, if desired; but I prefer to attach it with a pin. y

Having thus described Imy invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The plates C D E, constructed as described, and arranged and combined with apocket-book and spring catch, as and for the purpose set` forth.
