' J. CAMPBELL DOUBLE END HOOK Filed March I Jaaep/z Campbell Patented Aug. 7, 1923.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH CAMPBELL, OF NEAR VANIDUSEB, MISSOURI.
DOUBLE END HOOK.
Application filed March 31, 1922.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that J OSEPI-I CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing near Vanduser, in the county of Stoddard and State of Missouri, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double End Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hoisting and hauling devices, particularly adapted for use in logging camps, as described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of same.
The invention consists principally in the novel formation of a hook cast in one piece and a roller mounted in one end of the hook to tighten same around a log or other object and means connected at the opposite end for disengaging the hook from a log or other object after the same has been hoisted or hauled to a desired point.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a device that can be quickly placed around a log of any size and the harder the fuel is on the hoisting table or drag line, the tighter the device will engage the log.
A further object of my invention is to construct a device of this character that will instantly release itself from engagement with a log by a pull on the backing cable which is operated from the hoisting or haulin engine.
A still further object of my invention is to construct a device of this character that will mean a considerable saving of time in the uncoupling of logs where it is now neces sary when piling up logs for some one to climb or stay on top of the pile-for the purpose of uncoupling the hoisting means from engagement with the logs.
And a still further object of my invention is to provide means for preventing the possible loss of life, which frequently happened when unloading logs from a car or bank of a river into the water, and it is necessary for some one to run over the wet slippery logs and uncouple the hoisting device.
An additional object of my invention is to Serial No. 548,498.
provide a device of this character which is simple in construction and operation, dur able, eflicient for the purpose intended and one that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a relatively low cost.
These and like objects will be better understood as the description proceeds and as is specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device.
Figure 2 is a plan view of same.
Figure 3 is a side view of same, and
Figure 4 is a modification showing an other form of an improved double end hook.
Referring to the drawings in detail, like numerals will be used to designate like parts in the different views.
The numeral 1 denotes the body portion of my invention which is constructed of any suitable length and thickness, also of any desired material. Formed integral with the body 1 intermediate the ends 2 and 3 is an arm 4. The end 3 of the body 1 is bifurcated to provide means for journalling a pulley 5 therein. A hoisting or drag cable 6 passes around the pulley and has on its free end a ring 7, which engages the arm 4 formed on the body portion 1. A backing cable or guide rope 8 is attached to the end 2 of the body portion as indicated by the numeral 9.
In the operation of my invention, the body 1 is placed on the logs or other objects 10, and the cable 6 which passes through the pulley 5 is then placed around the log as indicated in Fig. 1, and the ring 7 placed over the arm 4:, thus it will be seen that the harder the pull on the cable 6 the tighter the free end of the cable and the body of the device will grip the log.
After the log has been placed in the desired position, the strain on the hoisting cable 6 is released and a pull exerted on the backing cable which disengages the arm 4: from the ring 7 While I have shown and described the prefered form of my invention, I realize that minor changes may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the Q a y 1,464,027
invention as claimed, therefore I do not Wish one end of said body, a cable passing through to limit myself to the exact details of consaid pulley and connected With the hook and 10 struction shown and described. a cable connected With the opposite end of What I claim as new and desire .to prothe body ortion for disengaging the hook 5 tect by Letters Patent is from the rst mentioned cable.
In a hoi'sting and hauling device a body, In testimony whereof I afliX my signaa' hook formed intermediate the ends 01 ture. said body portion, a pulley journalled in JOSEPH CAMPBELL.
