- My invention has especial application to mortice locks which are operated by a separate pin tumbler key operated lock, the tumbler lock with the key plug being exposed usually in an escutcheon or other ornamental device, in the side of a door. in most cases and particularly with outside doors, it is desirable for the sake of appearance to have the escutcheon or the exposed end of the key operated lock centrally located in the stile of the door. To satisfy this requirement the dimensions of the lock must be such that the back set of the key mechanism, i. e., the distance from the key hole to the face plate, is substantially equal to half the width of the stile. Be it known that I, Oscar: C. Rrxson, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Rochelle, in the county of lVestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and
exact description.
My invention has especial application to mortice locks which are operated by a separate pin tumbler key operated lock, the tumbler lock with the key plug being exposed usually in an escutcheon or other ornamental device, in the side of a door. in most cases and particularly with outside doors, it is desirable for the sake of appearance to have the escutcheon or the exposed end of the key operated lock centrally located in the stile of the door. To satisfy this requirement the dimensions of the lock must be such that the back set of the key mechanism, i. e., the distance from the key hole to the face plate, is substantially equal to half the width of the stile. It has therefore been necessary for supply dealers to carry in stock several numbers of locks differing from each other essentially only in the distance between the face plate and keyoperated lock.
An object of my invention is to provide a lock which may be adapted to various widths of stiles, thereby reducing the numbers of locks which a dealer must carry in stock, and in accordance with my invention I make the back set of the key mechanism adjustable so as to bring the escu-tcheon into the desired relation to the stile of the door.
Preferably the angular disposition of the key mechanism is substantially unchanged in any adjusted position, since it is desirable that the key slot should be vertical in the locked and unlocked positions of the key plug. l/Vhere, for instance, the adjustment is effected by an arcuate movement of the key mechanism, a suitable connection may be provided between the key mechanism and the face plate which will permit of the arouate movement of the shell while restraining it from rotative or angular movement.
My invention also comprehends various other features of construction which will appear more particularly from the description of the embodiment of my invention selected for the purpose of illustration and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a complete mechanism embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the same;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on line 8-3 of Fig. 2;
Figure 4 is a transverse section of the supporting frame and shell on line 1- i of Figure 1; and
Figures 5 and 6 are details in side and inner end elevation of the key mechanism.
The illustrated lock mechanism is of the type in which the face plate 1 is covered by a finishing and protecting plate or mask 2, usually of brass, which prevents access to mechanism within the mortice in the door and minimizes the likelihood of unauthorized tampering with the lock. The housing of the mortice lock, consisting of the two" cover or side plates 3 and 4, is secured to the face plate 1 in any suitable way, as by screws 5. The bolt 6 is actuated by an operating member or lever 7 which protrudes through the top of the mortice lock housing and is itself operated by the key mechanism, as will be hereinafter described. A latch member 8 is pivoted within a recess in the side of the bolt 6, being pivotally connected at its free end to the operating member 7. A fiat spring 9 tends to hold the latch 8 elevated with its two shoulders 8 and 8 behind a lug 10 on the cover plate 5 of the lock, in the unlockedand locked position of the bolt, respectively, and in throwing the bolt it is therefore necessary first to depress the free end of the latch 8 suflicient to clear the lug 10.
The key mechanism consists of the usual cylinder pin tumbler lock 11 having an eccentric key plug on the inner end of which is the cam or roll back 12. Qnly one of the key mechanisms is shown, although manifestly another may be employed on the opposite side of the door. To receive the key mech anism a shell 13 is employed, which has two lateral trunnion projections bearing in circular openings in two parallel plates 14: and 15 secured together by rivets 16, as shown, and pivoted at their lower end by screws 17 to the mortice lock. They are further secured together at their centers by ascrew 18 which passes through an opening in the operating member 7 and serves as a fulcrum therefor.

The trunnion projections of the shell 13' are hollow and provided with internal screw threads into which are received the inner screw threaded ends of the key mechanisms 11. The key mechanisms are screwed within the shell until the end of the operating member 7 lies within the path 0t movement of the roll back 12, and are then locked against rotation therein by the respective set'screw 20 which engages in a groove in the side of the cylinder, one groove being provided in proper position in each side to make the cylinder reversible. The face plate 1 is provided with a hole 21 opposite the heads of the set screws 20, which affords access with a proper tool to the set screws when the cover plate 2 is removed.
It .is now manifest that by turning the key the roll back 12 is caused first to depress the member 7 to cause the latch 8 to clear the lug. 10, and that the further movement of the rollback causes the member 7 to bear against the fulcrum 18 and throw the bolt either in or out.
To swing-- the key mechanism upon the pivots 17 and vary its back set or distance from'the face plate, a screw and nut mechanism is employed; The shell 13 is provided at its top with an elongated longitudinally extending nut 22 and a feed screw 23 engage'sl in this nut and has its head bearing loosely in a counter-sunk hole in the face plate 1'. By turning the screw 23 by means of a screw driver applied to either end the keymechanismis swung, upon the pivots 17 and" at the same time the cylinder and shell are held in substantially'the same angular position by reason of the long bearing of the I the lug or nut 22. The bearings therefore rotate about the trunnions as the partsare adjusted. Because of the relative thinness of the face plate the head of the feed screw 23 has a certain freedom of movement which prevents binding of the parts. By the adjusting operation above described, it will be seen that the key hole of the lock can be located at the exact center of the stile of the door thus making the lock of universal application to doors having different widths of stiles.
It is manifest that the invention is' in no wise limited to any particular type of key mechanism, and in fact comprehends the combination with any, lock operating mechanismwhether' a door knob, thumbtii'rn,'bitted' key; mechanism, or other expedi'ent;
It is obvious that various modifications may be made in the construction shown and described within tllfilDi'iilC-ljfilfl and scope of my" invention.
I claim:
1'. A look comprising,.irr combination, a lock case, a face plate carried thereby, a lock operating mechanism pivoted to the lock case and adjustable toward and from the face plate and operative in all positions upon the lock.
2. A mortise lock comprising, in combination, a lock case, a faceplate carried thereby a lock operating mechanism carried by the lock for operating the lock from either side oi the door, said lock operating mechanism being adjustable relative to the lock toward and from the face plate and operative in all positions upon the lock.
3. A lock construction for doors having a mortise and a transverse orifice communicating with the mortise from either side of the door, which construction comprises, in combination, a face plate and a bolt. a bolt operating mechanism adaptedto beinser'ted through the transverse orifice from either side of the door, a support forthe bolt operating mechanism constructed to receive the same from either side and adjustable independently of the bolt toward and from the face plate, said bolt operating mechanism when carried by the support being operative upon the bolt throughout the range of ad justment' of said support.
4. In a lock, the combination" of a lock case, a face plate carried thereby, a bolt, a lock operating mechanism exterior to the lock case having operative relation to the bolt, said operating mechanism being adj ustable toward and from the faceplate and operative in allpositions upon'the bolt.
5. The combination of a lock including a face plate, a lock operatingmechanism aidjustable toward and from the face plate, a bolt, a latch carried thereby, and an operating member having "operative relation to the latch and lock operating mechanism throughout the latters'range of adjustment.
6. The combination of a lock including a face plate, a lock operating mechanism adjustable toward and from the face plate, a bolt, an operating member for the bolt having operative relation to the lock operating mechanism, and meansactuated by the adjusting of the lock operating mechanism for keepin the operating member in operative relatlon to the bolt and lock operating mechanism throughout the latters range of adjustment.
7. Thecombinat'ion of a look, a face plate carried thereby, a lock operating jkey mechanism carried by; the'lockan'd adjustable relative to the look toward and froni'the face plate, and means for efi'ectings'a'id adjustment, said means comprising a nut carried by the key mechanism and a feed screw en gaging in the nut and bearing at one end in the face plate.
8. The combination of a lock, a face plate carried thereby, key mechanism for operating the look, a support for the key mechanism pivoted to the lock, and an adjustable connection between the support and face plate.
9. The combination of a lock, a face plate carried thereby, a supporting member pivoted to the lock, a cylindrical key mechanism for operating the lock rotatively mounted in the supporting member, and an adjustable connection between the key mechanism and face plate adapted to adjust the supporting member upon its pivot While maintaining the key mechanism in substantially fixed angular position relative to the face plate during said adjustment. 10. The combination of a lock including a protruding operating member, a face plate attached to the look, a supporting member pivoted to the lock, a cylindrical key mechanism rotatively mounted in the supporting member and having a cam member for engaging and actuating the said op erating member within limits of pivotal movement of the supporting member, a threaded nut on the key mechanism, and a feed screw engaging the nut and bearing at one end in the face plate.
11. The combination of a lock including a protruding operating member, a face plate attached to the lock, a supporting member pivoted to the lock and having a bearing, a hollow cylindrical shell rotatable in said bearing and having a screw threaded nut integral therewith, a cylindrical key-operated lock carried by said shell and having a cam member for engaging and actuatin the said operating member within limits 0% pivotal movement of the supporting member, and a feed screw engaging in the nut on the shell and bearing at one end in the face plate.
12. The combination of a lock including a protruding operating member, a faceplate attached to the lock, a supporting member pivoted to the lock and having a bearing, a hollow cylindrical shell rotatable in said bearing and having a screw threaded nut integral therewith, a cylindrical key-operated lock carried by said shell and having a cam member for engaging and actuating the said operating member within limits of pivotal movement of the supporting member, the key-operated lock being rotatively adjustable in the shell, a set screw for securing the key-operated lock in the adjusted position in the shell, the face plate being provided with a. hole opposite the set screw, and a feed screw engaging in the nut on the shell and bearing at one end in the face plate.
13. In a lock, the combination of a face plate, a key mechanism, a carrier for the key mechanism bodily movable towards and away from the face plate and means for se curing the key mechanism in the carrier, the
face plate having an opening affording access to said securing means.
