Description

UNITED STATES PATENT CEEIGE,
ANDREW OKEEFE, OF NEWY YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN HINGES.
Specification farming fart of Letters Patent No. 146,270, dated January 6, 1&74; application filed December 18, 1873.
l i do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon,
which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of hinges which are provided with detachable plates to cover the screw-heads; and it consists in providing the outside removable plate of a hinge with hooks, and the hinge-leaf with recesses and a spring, together with an aperture for the insertion of a wire or rod, to reach and act upon the spring', as hereinafter more fully described.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the anneXed drawing, in which- Figure l is a front view of the hinge open, with one of the plates removed and the inner side thereof shown at the side of the hinge; and Fig. 2 is a section through the line :v w, Fig. 1.
A A represent the leaves of a door-hinge, constructed in any of the known and usual ways, and provided with countersunk screwholes ce a, for the passage of the screws that fasten the hinge to the doorv and door-frame. B B represent the two plates attached to and covering the outside of the leaves A A. Each plate B is, near its lower end, on the inner side, provided with a catch or hook, b, and at the upper end, near the knuckle of the hinge, it is provided with a similar hook or catch, b. On the outside of the leaf A, near the lower edge, is formed a recess, d, with a plate, j', attached flush with the outside of the leaf. Into this recess the hook b on the plate B is in- Y catches on a spring, i. The spring is held in a recess, d2, on the leaf, and covered by a plate, f', which is also flush with the outside of the leaf, and has an aperture corresponding with the recess d1, through which the hook L' enters. In the upper edge of each leaf A is a small aperture or passage, c, through jwhich a rod or wire, e', may be inserted to press down the spring 2, when the plate B can easily be removed.
A hinge thus constructed .can be `easily cleaned without damage to the painting; the walls may be whitewashed and the doors painted without soiling the outside of the hinge, as the plates B B are easily removed, when desired, and put on again.
The plates B B may be plated and ornamented in any suitable manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i g The hinge-leaf A,provided with recesses d d1 d2, plates ff', spring i, and aperture or passage e for insertion of rod or wire e', in combin ation with thedetachable plate B, provided with hooks or catches b b', all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW OKEEFE.
