Description

UNITED- STATEs WILLIAM H. MCCOY, OF MILLERS FALLS, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT |N oHucKs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,262, dated January 6 5, 1874; application filed June 20, 1873.
To all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. McOov, of Millers Falls, in the county of Franklin and in the State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chuck for Drills, Ste.; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification. l
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a chuck for drills, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention' appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to de scribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- .lFigures 1 and 2 are longitudinal sections of my chuck. Fig. 3 is a side view of the stock. Fig. 4 is an end view of the entire chuck, and
Figi. 5 shows one of the jaws.
A represents the stock of my chuck, provided witha hole or cavity at one end for the insertion of thehandle B. This part of the stock is cylindrical, with screw-threads around it for the sleeve G to be screwed on the same. The lower part of the stock A is tapering, as shown in Fig. 3, and the corresponding part of the sleeve is Inade in the sameF manner to iit snugly4 over it. The tapering part of the stock A is slotted at right angles for the reception of the jaws D, and from the upper end of each slot a a groove, b, extends up to and through the upper end of the-stock. Each jaw D is made in wedge form with the point cut oif, as shown in Fig. 5, and near the base of the jaw is made shown in Fig. 2, which thus, in addition to its office as'a dowel, will act as a spring to throw the j aw outward when the sleeve C is loosened or a solid dowel, d', may be used, as shown in Fig. 1, in which case a spring or spring-wire, 7L, is fastened in the groove b on the stock, and the end inserted in a hole, t, in the end ofthe jaw. For smaller chucks` this latter will be best, `as it does not necessitate such a large slot in the jaw, but for larger chucks I prefer to use the spiral-spring dowel.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the stock A, slotted jaws D D with dowels in their slots,'spr ings h h, and the sleeve G, allconstructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimonyhthat I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of May, 1873.
XVM. H. MGCOY. Witnesses:
