T o aZZ whom it may concern Be itlmown that I, ARTHUR S. EVEREIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of'Esse'X and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Heel-Building Machines,of which the following is a specification.
- This invention relates to certain improvements in thattype of machineknown as the Page heel-building machine, ina commercial form of which the freshly-cemented lifts are assembled in a heel-form, and the heels thus formed, are then successively delivered thereby to aseries of presses connected together in the form of an endless chain, so that they are pressed together immediately after being assembled, and are held pressed together for a sufiicient time to enable the cement to set.
While the necessity of the employment of building nails is thus avoided, it has been found that building nails are desirable in' some instances, particularly where a high heel, composed of pulp, is being manufac tured; onaccount of the fact that the pulp .is not so strong as the cement which holds the lifts together, so that, when the heel is pricked'in connection with the heel-attach} ing operation, the lifts sometimes split...
n a type of said machine in which the heel is built in a form which is adapted to open, against the action of springs, to penmit the form to be withdrawn from the heel when clamped, there is a tendency to cause the lifts to slip out of position to a slight ex tent, astheyare clamp'echwhich tendency is not sufficiently resisted by said springs of the light tension which it is necessary to em ploy, so that the heel produced is not always as nearly perfect, under such conditions, as is usually desired.
An object of the invention is to provide means whereby a building nail may be driven in the heel as-soon as it'is assembled, and before it is delivered to one of the presses, above referred to, so that all the ad vantages of having immediate pressure applied to the assembled liftsare secured, and, the same time, the heel is provided with a building nail, without serious delay to the building operation, as usually performed with the machine above roferredto.
A. further object of the invention is to pro vide means whereby the heel form. may be securely locked and the heel and lifts held in desired position while the pressure'is ap plied thereto, and to provide meanswhereby the form will be automatically unlocked to permit ready withdrawal of the form from the heel, after it has been clampech ()-ther objects of my inventionare to provlde an improved form of building naildriving mechanism, which is especially adapted for use in the connection above referred to. Said table 16 is provided with afipair of guideway' ribs 18, in which a heel-form is mounted to slide, said heel-form comprising a fiat base-plate 20, having a pair of arms 22 at its longitudinal edges, which extend over said table. A T-shaped bracket 24 is mounted for forward and rearward adjustment on said base-plate and a. pair of heel-engaging fingers 26 are mounted in the arms of said bracket 24L, respectively, said arms being arranged to extend divergent-1y rearward, and said fingers. being flat and having their longitudinal edges formed to fit the rear end of a. heel from top to bottom, and being supported by bolts 27, which pass perpendicularly through said bracket arms, so that said fingers extend convergent-1y and are adapted to be set, so that their lift-engaging edges incline toward eachothcr from bottom to top, such adjustment being particularly desirable when high heels, which tape-r considerably from base to top, are to be built.
A pair of heel-forming fingers 28 are pivoted on the rear end of each arm 22, in position to engage the breast end of a heel, and coil springs 30 are preferably provided which normally act to hold said fingers against stop shoulders in forming position, but are adapted to yield readily to permit said fingers to swing rearwardly, so that the form may be withdrawn from a heel. Each pair of fingers 28 has a lug 32, which is arranged to extend oppositely thereto, with relation to the pivots thereof, beyond the outer sides of said arms 22, and a pair of abutment rods 34 are mounted in the ribs 18, of the table 16, in position to engage said lugs 32, when the form is in lift-receiving position, buffer springs 85 being provided between the opposite ends of said rods to those which engage said lugs, and adjusting screws 36, which are adapted to vary the tension of said springs.
'A latch t0, outwardly pressed by a spring 4 1, is arranged in the form plate 20, in position to engage the outer end of a rigid bracket 42, mounted on the right hand rib 18, to lock the form in its outermost position against inward movement, and an operating lever 44, having an uprighthandle thereon, is pivoted on a vertical pin 46 in the plate 20 and has a toe 48 arranged to engage a shoulder on the latch 40, so that, when said lever is swung rearwardly, it will cause the latch to be disengaged from the bracket 42. it
A rod 50 is secured in the table 16 and has a stop-lug 52 threaded thereon; and adapted to provide a positive stop for the form plate at the point at whiehthe latch 40 engages its shoulder on bracket 42, to lock the form againstcinward movement.
A rod 54 is mounted to slide vertically in suitable lugs or brackets on the machine frame and a bell-crank lever is swiveled on the upper end thereof, one arm 55 of which has a handle at its end, and the other arm 56'of which has a vertical rod 57 adjustably mounted therein and having a clamping plate 58 on its lower end, the arrangement being such that said plate 58 may be carried to and from a position to clamp a pile of lifts held in position by the heel-forming members 26 and 28. A spring 60 is arranged on the rod 54 between a lug 59 on the frame and a collar 61 on the rod and acts nor: mally to sustain said rod in a position to hold the clamping plate 58 at a suitable distance above the form, a stop nut 54k threaded on the lower end of said rod 54- being arranged to engage a guide lug 59 and limit the upward movement thereof.
A vertically disposed driver rod 62 is arranged to reciprocate in a guide tube 63 see cured at itsupper end to the table 16 and depending therefrom, said rod 62 having a small bore,in its upper end to receive a driver 64 and the bore in the upper end of tube 63 being of corresponding diameter to provide a suitable guide therefor. A bracket is mounted on the frame, and a sleeve 65 is arranged to slide therein, and has a spring 66 thereon between said bracket and an ad justable nut 67 on its lower end. A head 65' is formed on the upper en d of said sleeve 65, providing a shoulder which limits the downward moven'ient thereof. The rod 62 is threaded in said sleee65 to permit vertical adjustment of the rod 62 therein, there by to vary the initial position of the driver according to the length of the nail. to be driven.
A bifurcated operating lever 70 is arranged astride both the rods 62 and 5 and is connected, at an intermediate point, by links 72 to the'head 65 of sleeve 65, and. at one end, by a pivot 73, to the rod 54. The opposite end of the lever 70 is connected to a treadle 74 by a chain or cable 76, which passes over a roll 77.
Any suitable means for causing the form, by its inward movement. to move the latch 12 out of operative position may be provided, the means shown comprising a yoke 80, which is connected to the latch 12 and extends about the rod 10, and a slide 82 which is pivoted to said yoke and extends about the tube 63 and has its end in position to be engaged by a depending arm 84 on the form base plate 20, when the latter is pushed back to its rearmost position. An operating lever 86, for the carrier driving mechanism, is also arranged to be engaged by the form on its return movement, as in said prior machines.

In a heel-building machine, a heelpress, a heel-form reciprocally movable bc tween liftassembling'position and a posi tion in which it delivers an assembled heel to said press, and having a forming-member movable to permit disengagementfrom the heel as it is withdrawn from said press, means to lock said member in forming position when the form is in said lift-assembling position, and means to clamp the lifts in the form temporarily while in said position.
6. In a heel-building machine, a. heelform reciprocally movable between a liftassemblin'g position and a heel-delivering position, means for pressing the lifts together and driving a building-nail there through while held by said form in said assembli'ng position, a series of heel-presses successively movable into said delivering position to clamp a heel held in said form and means permitting said form to open to permit withdrawal thereof from a heel while held by one of said heel-presses.
7. In a heel-building machine, a heelform movable between a lift -assembling po sition and a heel-delivering position and having a side section pivotally mounted to swing away from a heel therein, to permit withdrawal of the form from the heel when in delivering position, meansto lock said side-section in normal position, when the form is in said assembling position, means to press the lifts into the form and drive a building nail therethrough when the side section is in locked position, and means to unlock the side section as the form is moved to delivering position. In a heel-building machine, a heelform movable to carry a heel held thereby from a lift-assembling position to aheel delivering position, and having a yieldable side-member to permit delivery of the heel therefrom, a series of heel-presses successively movable into said delivering position to receive the heels from said form, clamping and nail-driving means arranged to press the lifts into said form and to drive a building-nail therethrough when in said assembling position, and means to lock said yield able side-member in forming position when the form is in said assembling posi-. tion, and to unlockthe same whenmoved from said position to permit withdrawal of the form from the heel while held by one of said heel presses.
9. In a heel-building machine, a heelform reciprocally movable between a liftassembling position and a heel-delivering position and having a movable side-member, means to lock said side-member in forming position when the form is in assembling position, and to unlock the same as the form is moved from said position, means successively to press the lifts into said form and drive a building-nail therethrough when the form is in assembling position, and a series of heel-presses successively, movable into position to clamp a heel held by said form in said delivering position.
10. In a heel-building machine,a heelforrn reciprocally movable between a lift assembling position and a heel-delivering position, and having a side-member pivotally mounted to swing laterally between a heel-forming position and a position permitting disengagement of the form from the heel, a lug projecting from said member oppositely thereto with relation to its pivot, a stationary abutment arranged to be engaged by said lug, as the form is moved into as sembling position, to cause said side member to be forced nto forming position, an automat c latch arranged to lock said form against movement when the form is moved into assembling position and hold said lug in engagement with said abutment, and an operating devicemovable successively to move said latch to unlock said form and to move the form to said delivering position. 11. In a heel-building machine, a table having guideways, a heel form reciprocally movable therein between a lift-assembling position and a heel-delivering position, said form having a heel-forming member pivoted thereon to swing horizontally to permit disengagement of the form from a heel when withdrawn from said delivering position, a lug on said forming-member extending oppositely with relation to the pivot thereof, an abutment on the table arranged to engage said lug and hold said member in formin position when said form is in assembling position, a spring-latch on said form arranged automatically to engage the table when the form is in assembling position, to lock the same in said position, a lever on theform movable in a direction to disengage the latch fromthe table and movable in the same direction to pushthe form towards delivering position, and means for forcing the lifts into the form when the latter is in assembling position. i a
