IMPROVEMENT IN GIG-SADDLE'. ATTACHMENTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,131, dated January 6, 1674; application filed December 3, 1873.

` of the city of Pittsburg, county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gig-Saddles;

and I do hereby declare the following to be a y full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a metallic back-band clip for gig or express saddles, which clip is separate and distinct from the tree itself and forming no part thereof, and the saine is applied as a fastening to secure the back-band to the skirt of the saddle, in such a manner as to allow it to swing back and forth with the motion of the animal, thus relieving the saddle from all strain at its weakest point, vbesides being more durable than anything yet introduced. It is less expensive, as by its use both labor and material are saved. Another important advantage in its use is this: In case the backband wears out, (as it always does in the ordinary saddles,) it can be replaced by a new one, by simply removing the screw and inserting the new piece where the old came out, Without in any way marring or detacing the saddle.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.

Figure 1, in the drawing, represents the skirt-ing of the saddle A, to which the clip C is attached, and the connection of the back.- band or a shaft-tug to the clip by means of the bolt c" passing through the clip, skirting, and back-band or tug, which bolt c' may be either riveted or secured by a nut on the un der side of the skirting.

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the clip,

having formed upon it the lugs d d and hole c,

through which the bolt passes at its lower end bolts or rivets may be used in fastening the y same to the saddle or skirting.

Fig. 4 shows another variation in the forni of the clip, with the lug c formed upon its lower end, to hold and secure thebackband or tug in position by means of the nut c.

The under side ofthe several projections formed upon the clip is rounded in such a manner as to admit the lateral vibration or `movement of the back-band or shaft-tug, which conform to the shape of the clip when ad justed within it.

These clips can be made in varied forms, more or less ornamental in their external appearance, and highly polished, or the same may be covered with leather, or other material if desired. f

Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire. to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The back-band clip C, Fig. 4, with its projecting lug c" and nut c, in the manner and for the purpose herein described. r

2. A back-band clip, constructed as herein 1 described, and secured to the saddle in such a manner as to retain the back-band in position and allow free lateral movement to the same, in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
