COMBINATION WALKING CANE.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, Lno FRrrsoI-IKA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Valking Canes, of which the following is a specilication.

One object of my said invention is the provision of a walking cane adjustable as to length and adapted to be used as a cane and as a seat of various-heights.

Anotherobject of the said invention is the provision of a cane having a handle which is 'adapted to be detached from the cane and used as a saw handle, the saw blade being inclosed in the upper tubular section of the cane.

To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the. improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a side elevation of my novel cane.

Figure 2 is an edge elevation of the same.

Figure 3 is a section taken longitudinally in the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Figure 2.

Figure 4 is a longitudinal section taken in the plane indicated by the line 4 4 of Figure 1.

Figure 5 is a side elevation showing the device adjusted for use as a seat or stool.

Figure 6 is a horizontal section taken on the line 6 6 of Figure 5, looking upwardly.

Figure 7 is an enlarged transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 7 7 of Figure 1.

Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.

Among other elements my novel cane comprises a lower and preferably tubular member 1 of metal or other appropriate material provided in the side with a longitudinal keyway 2. At its lower end the member l is provided with a plug 3 on which is a point 4 and near its upper end the member 1 is provided with a radially disposed aperture 5 for the passage of a stud 6, carried by a flat spring 7 attached at 8 to the inner sides of the member 1.

The member 1 is telescopically arranged relative to an upper and comparatively large member 9 which is tubular and may be Serial N0. 549 ,468

formed of any material compatible with the purpose of my invention. At intervals in its length the member 9 is provided with radial apertures 10 to receive the before mentioned stud 6 whereby the length of the cane may be adjusted. It will also be observed by reference to Figure 4 and Figure 7 that the member 9 is equipped with a key 11, movable in the keyway 2 with a view to preventing turning of either of the members 1 and 9 about its axis and relatively to the other. Manifestly the member 1 can be rendered quite short so as to serve as a seat support after the manner illustrated in Figure 5.

Disposed in and on the upper end of the tubular member 9 is a plug 12, and pivotally connected at'13 to the exposed portion of the said plug 12 are ears 14 on handle sections 15, the said handle sections 15 being of open formation, and being designed to rest .in parallelisml and aga-inst each other when the device is used merely as a cane. The handle sections 15 are provided at their outer sectionswvith headed studs- 16, and engaging and supported by the said studs 16 are rigid plates 17, the said plates 17 being notched as designated by 18.

When the device'is used merely as a walking cane the rigid plates 17 rest idly on the studs 16 after the manner clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2. When, however, it is desired to convert the cane as a whole into a stool or seat, and the handle sections 15 into a seat body, the handle sections 15 are swung to the horizontal position shown in Figure 5, and are locked in said position through the medium of the plates 17, each of the said plates 17 as shown in Figures 5 and 6 is engaged with one stud 16 of one handle section 15 and being also engaged with one stud 16 of the other handle section 15. In consequence of this the sections 15 will be strongly maintained in horizontal position and without liability of giving downwardly or sagging. TWhen it is desired to change the cane from a seat or stool back into a walking cane, it is simply necessary to remove the plates 17 from the positions shown in Figures 5 and 6, swing the handle seotions 15 upwardly, and then replace the plates 17 in the positions shown in Figures 1 and 2.

The pin 2O normally rests in an aperture 22 in the upper end portion of the cane member 9, this with a View to strongly though detachably connecting the closure member l2 and the handles or handle sections through the medium of the member 9. 7When, however, the pin is pressed inwardly so as to clear the inner side of the member 9, the closure member l2 may be Withdrawn and disassociated from the tubular member 9. In this connection it will be noted that the member l2 carries a blade Q3, preferably a saw blade as shown, which blade When the member l2 is connected to the tubulaimember 9, is inclosed in and protected by the member 9 and also by the member l when the latter is positioned almost entirely within the member 9.

lt Will be manifest from the foregoing that When the pin 2O is disengaged from the tubular member 9, and the member 12 and the blade 23 are removed with the handle sections 15 from the member 9, the handles or handle sections 15 may be used in the manner common to saw handles to facilitate and render convenient the reciprocation of the blade 23.

l have entered into a detailed description of the construction and arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to im- Maase@ part a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. l do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the said specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications may be made such as fall Within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent,

l. A cane constructed and arranged to be increased and diminished in length and having a combined handle and seat, said handle and seat being made up of a body, handle sections hingedly connected thereto, and plates detachably connected to the handle sections and adapted when said sections are disposed horizontally to prevent movement of the same below the horizontal.

2. A cane having a combined handle and seat, the said cane being made up of lower and upper telescopic members, one of Which is provided With apertures at intervals in its length and the other With a spring-pressed stud to enter said apertures, and one of which is provided With a longitudinal key- Way and the other With a key to rest and move in said key-Way.
