C. P. TRIMBLE CLIP FOR FASTENING COVERS TO SEAT FRAMES AND THE LIKE Filed Sept. 5, 1922 Patented May l5, i923.
CHARLES P. TRIMBLE, OF PITTSBURGH,
PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 FORT PITT .'BEDDING COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENN- SYLVANIA.
CLIP FOR FASTENING COVERS T0 SEAT FRAMES AND THE LIKE.
I Application filed September 5, 1922.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. TRIMBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clips for Fastening Covers tol Seat Frames and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clips for fastening covers to seat frames and the like; and it comprises a sheet metal member having near its extremities oppositely disposed offset or struckup portions, the protuberance formed-by one adapted to register with the recess formed by the other and a substantial centrally located protuberance which eX- tends outward when the ends of the membe'r are bent toward each other; all as more fully hereinafter set forth and as claimed.
Among other objects of the invention is the provision of inexpensive sheet metal clips which may be easily attached around the lower border frame of a seat or cushion and which will securely hold the covering in position, at the same time presenting a neat appearance and protecting the bottom edge of the covering around the bottom border frame as well as the side walls of the covering from contact with the seat or cushion support. V l
In the accompanying drawings showing one form of a specific embodiment of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a perspgztive segmental view of a cushion or seat, showing the clips in po-A sition;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section along line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail front elevation of the clip in position on the cushion or seat; and
Fig. 4; is a detail perspective of the clip in flattened position or before being placed on the cushion frame. l
In the drawings 1 indicates the cushion or seat which is provided with a top border wire or frame (not shown) over which the cover is stretched and "la bottom border frame 2 of wire or the like. The fabric 3, usually canvas or the like, together with the cover 4, usually leather or the like, is
Serial No. 586,223.
stretched over the top border frame and clamped around the bottom border wire, there being usually hair or felt between the canvas 3 and the leather 4 at the top and part way down the sides of the cushion. The clip is designated as a Whole by 5. This clip is provided at about its middle with a struckup portion 6 which forms a projection upon which the seat will rest when in position on its support. Near one end of the clip there is provided the struckout portion 7 and the sunken portion-8 adapted to register and hold the fabric and leather between them when the clip is bent in the position shown in Fig. 2. A tool or the like may be used for fastening the clip around the border wire 2 and for forcing the protuberance 7 toward the indentation formed at 8. Preferably the side on which the protuberance 8 is madeis substantially straight or in line with the outer side of the cushion, while the other side of the clip on which the protuberance 7 is made is curved slightly around the lwire 2. The result is that the fabric and leather are securely held in place over the top wire and around the bottom border wire 2 and there is presented the abutment 6 which rests updn the seat support and thus holds the seat and the fabric which is around the'border wire between the clips, away from the support. The outside protuberances 8 act to protect the sides of the cushions in a similar way. As many clips as are necessary may be used spaced'slightly apart on the Wire.
What I claim is 1. A clip for fastening covers to seat frames and the like comprising a sheet metal member having near itsy extremities oppositely disposed imperforate offset portions and having a substantially centrally located protuberance, whereby when the ends of the clip are bent toward each other the protuberance formed by one offset portion will register with the recess formed by the other and the Acentrally located protuberance will extend outwardly from 'the face of the clip. f
2. A clip for fastening covers to seat frames and thejljike comprising a metal member having" alplurality of struckup portions, two of said struckup portions being located near the extremities of said member and projecting from opposite faces and one of said struckup portions being substantially in the center of the said member.
3. A sheet metal clip provided With a protuberance on onesend and an indentation on the other and adapted to register when the ends of the clip are bent toward each other, and a substantially centrally located protuberance adapted to form a bottom projecting abutment.
4. The combination with a cushion or rseat having a bottom border frame and` cover therearound, ofy a metal clip having a body portion encircling the cover and said border frame, one side of said clip provided with an indentation and the other side provided With a protuberance, the protuberance registering With the indentation vvith the fabric therebetween and held in lthe indentation and a bottom projection on said clip adapted to hold the fabric of the seat spaced from the support upon which the seat rests.
5. The combination with a cushion or seat having a bottom border ralne and cover therearound, of a plurality of metal clips spaced around the border frame, feach clip having a body portion encircling the cover and said border frame, with one side provided With an indentation and the other side provided With a protuberance, the protuberance registering with the indentation With the fabric therebetween and held in the indentation, and a bottom projection on said clip adapted to hold the fabric of the seat betweentheclips out of contact with the support upon Which the seat rests.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto afxed my signature.
CHARLES P. TRIMBLE.
