Description

S. T. WYMAN Biacking-Box Holders.
'N0.145,544. Patented Dec.16,1873.
Y/iliwaaea Z n w M157 UNITED STATES SAMUEL 'l. \YYMAN, OF LYNN, MASSAGHUSE'LTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLACKING-BOX HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,544, dated Dem mbcr 16, 1873; application filed November 15, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL T. WYMAN, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Blacking-Box Holders, of which the ztollowing is a specification:
Figure 1 of the aecompanyin g drawing is a central Vertical longitudinal section, Fig. 2 is a top view with the cover raised, and Fig. 3 .is a central yertical transverse section, of my improved blaeking-box holder.
The object of the present invention is to provide a convenient device for holding blacking-boxes, so as not to soil the users hands, and allow of its ready adjustment to accommodate and securely hold dift'erent-sizedboxcs and to this end the invention consists of a metal or other holder formed in two semicircular sections, adjusted to or from each other, to receive and hold dili'ercntsized boxes, by screws ope *ating in screw-ears formed on each side of the said sections, and of rabbeting or stepping down the interior of the sections to form seats and bearings for boxes of different sizes; also, of providing the holder with an adjustable cover having a slotted hinged plate, held to the rear section by a screw, to accommodate boxes of difiierent depths in the holder, all of which I. will now proceed to describe.
In the drawings, A A represent two metal or other semicircular sections, formed on both sides with ears B B, having screw-threads, with which engage transverse screws 0 U, by which the sections are held and adjusted near to or farther from each other, to admit and hold a larger or smaller box, as desired. The sections A A are curved or otherwise shaped on the exterior, and on the interior are rabbeted or stepped down, forming one or more rims, a, each of less diameter than the other as they near the bottom, which is open; or, itdesired, the sections may be extended so as to form a closed bottom. The front section A is formed or provided with a suitable handle, 1), and the rear section A is formed at the back with a projecting plate or lug, E, recessed on the front to form side bearings for a vertical plate, l
formed with a slot, f, and hinged or pivoted at the top to side bearings of a plate, G7 attached to or formed on a circular cover, ll, that extends over the top of the sections AA. The plate E is formed with screw-threads to receive the ends of a screw, I, that passes through the slot f, and bears against the face of, so as to hold it in any desired position, the plate I which thus allows the cover 1-1 to be raised or lowered to the height desired, to accommodate in the holder boxes of different depths.
-It preferred, the sections A A may be hinged together on one side and held and adjusted on the other side by a screw.
The blacking-box is placed within the sections A A, and rests, according to its size, either on one of the higher or lower seats a of the holder, whose sections A A being brought together by the tightening of the screws 0 C, the face of the rim or seat a bears against and secure] y holds the box.
If the box is of a large size and. located on one of the upper seats, in order to allow the operation of the cover and permit it to lie flat on the box, the screw I is loosened, and the plate F raised to the desired height, and then fastened by the tightening of the said. screw; and when a small box is inserted on one of the lower seats a, the cover H is lowered to the desired position, by the adjustment of the plate 1 by means of the screw I.
liy the above description, retbrencc being had to the drawings, it will readily be seen that by my improvements a convenient holder producml that may rcz'ulily be adjusted to hold blacking'boxes of different sizes; that the blaching is kept covered when not in use, and is at all times easily accessible without soiling the hands of the person. using it.
lliaving thus described my improvements, what 1 claim as my invention, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent, is-
1. A blanching-box holder formed in two sections, A A, having cars 13 15, and held together and adjusted to or from each other by screws 0 U, to receive and hold boxes of dit .t'erent sizes, substantially as specified.
2. A blocking-boxholder formed in two seea screw, I, substantial] y as and (or the purpose tions, A A, held and adjusted as above deherein set forth. scribed, and rabbcted on the interior to form In testimony whereof I have signed my seats and bearings a of diminishing diameters, name to this specification in the presence of substantially as and for the purposes described. two subscribing witnesses;
3. Ineombina-tionwithablacking-boxholder, SAMUEL T. \YYMAN. arranged as herein described, an adjustable itnesses:
hinged cover, H, havin g a slotted hinged plate, CARROLL D. WVRIGIIT, F, held or released from the rear section A by SAML. M. BARTON.
