To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALoNzo WOODRUFF, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Combination of Bottle Caps and Brush Holders, of'which the following, taken in connection withthe accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact descriptionl' This invention relates-to certain improvements in the combination of bottle-cap and.

brush-holder in which the mainbody of the cap is preferably made of comparatively inexpensive sheet metal -such-as tin having a thread rolledthereon for inter-engagement with corresponding thread on the neck of the bottle whereby the cap may be removably secured thereto. These bottles are adapted to be used as containers for rubber stamp ink and other fluids or semifluids which are to be spread over and upon a surface by means of a-brush, and the main object of my invention is to provide a comparatively inexpensive cap for bottles of this character in which all portions of the cap are flushwith or within the marginal edge so that the cap may be supported bottom side up with its marginal edge restin fiatwise upon any fiat surface to cause any uid or semi-fl uid material which may lodge in the cap to rest upon the under side of the top when the cap isresting in an inverted position upon any suitable support and thereby to avoid the spilling of the material on to said support and also enabling the material which may lodge in the cap to readily flow back into the bottle instead of along the sides of the cap when the latter is replaced upon the bottl Y 4 Another. -object is to provide a brush with a' hollow longitudinally split shank or handle for expanding and contracting circum ferefitially so that it may he slipped over and upon'the inwardly projecting post of the cap with a friction fit capable of holding the brush in operative position upon said post when the cap is screwed upon the bottle. Another object is to provide the outer end a f of the post with a central lengthwise socket for the reception of a removable'handle by which the cap with the'brush may be manipulated without touching the cap. In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I have shown a bottle -1- adapted to contain a rubber stamp ink or other material, said bottle having an externally threaded neck 2 adapted to be engaged with a threaded sheet metal cap 3- or closing and opening the mouth of the bottle.

The cap is preferably made in the form of an inverted cup having a substantially flat top portion 4 and a pendent marginal flange 5- terminating at its lower end with a laterally projecting flange 6;a suflicient distance from the top portion 4 to engage an annular shoulder 7- on the bottle when the cap is tightly screwed inplace upon the bottle, said cap being provided'with a packing washer -8- of rubber or equivalent material substantially coextensive with and against the underside of the flat top portion 4 to engage the upper hnd of the mouth of the bottle and thereby to assist in preventing leakage of the contents of the bottle therefrom when the cap is in place. The brush comprises a sheet metal tubular, shank or handle 14 split longitudinally at -15' through one side to permit it be expanded and contracted circumferent'lally for sliding frictional engagement with the 1m inner end of the post ---9--- to hold the brush in operative positition thereon, the inner end of said brush being flattened to retain the bristles as 16.

The outer end of the post 9- is provided with a central lengthwise socket --17 for receiving the reduced end -18-- of a supplemental handle 19 which may a be made of wood or any cheap material capable of supporting and manipulating the cap with the brush thereon when applying the ink or other material to the surface of the pad or other device, it being understood that the stem -18 of a supplemental han dle --19- is 'frictiona-lly fitted in a socket 17 and may be easily withdrawn when desired, as for example, when it is necessary to support the cap bottom side up upon a suitable supporting surface in which case, the marginal edge of the cap will rest upon said surface and cause any ink or other material which may lodge within the cap to collect upon the inner side of the top, thereby obviating any liability of over-flow of that material on to the sup-port and permitting it to readily flow back into the bottle when the cap -3 is replaced upon the mouth of the bottle.

\Vhat I claim is:

A bottle cap having a substantially flat top and a downwardly projecting marginal flange threaded for screw engagement with the mouth of a bottle, in combination with a brush holder having a tubular upper end secured co-axially in an opening in said top wholly below the upper fiat face thereof, and a handle having a stem slidably engaged in the tubular upper end of the brush holder.
