CLARENCE D. PLATT, CF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
ELECTRIC CUT-CUT AND THE LIKE.
Application filed April 8, 1922. Serial No. 550,562.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE D. PLAT'r, a citizen of the United States of America residing at Bridge ort, Conn, have invented a new and useful lectric Cut-Out and the like, of which the following is a specification.
Devices of this character are frequently so constructed that the circuit terminals are covered or protected by removable covers through which the fuse or other screw base is adapted to be inserted. With such devices the Workman who is wiring the device frequently fails to secure the cover in place when the wiring is completed. This results in leaving the circuit terminals exposed.
To avoid these difiiculties l have secured "the screw shell or socket to the cap or cover omitted.
Fig. 3 is an exploded perspective showing the parts for the connection of one fuse plug and the like.
Figs. 4 and 5 are cross sectional views showing modified means for securing screw shells in caps.
The base 6' is usually of insulating material of such shape as the particular conditions of use require. The terminals 7 and 8 may be of any suitable design or construe tion. The cover 9 will be shaped to suit the particular conditions of use.
The particular construction illustrated is intended to accommodate fuse plugs of standard type and for this purpose there will be a center contact 10 in the form of a screw connected \to the terminal 7 by a member 11- The screw shell or socket 12 adapted to receive the threaded part of an ordinary plug is carried by the insulating cap 9 and may be held in place, for instance, by
displacement and a l 15 extending into a recess 16- to prevent re ative rotation. The base 6 is provided with a stationary metallic socket adapted to receive the lower end of the screw shell 12. Thissocket has a base flange 17 and spring fingers 18 which are preferably flared outward slightly to receive the tapered or rounded end of the screw shell 12. The terminal 8 is provided with an extension plate or foot 19 adapted to overstand the flange 17., and this plate 19 is provided with a central opening 20 to allow for the shank of the Screw 10. An insulating washer 22 is interposed between the plate 19 and the flange or washer 23 beneath the head of the screw 10. The base 6 is preferably provided with a recess 24 to accommodate the socket and the terminal 8. The base in this case is also provided with a groove 25 to accommodate the conductor leading to terminal 7. The cover may be secured in place by one or more screws such as 6.
When it is desired to wire the cut-out the cover is removed and the wires connected to the terminals 7 and 8 in the usual manner. When the cover is removed there is no way of fastening a standard fuse plug or other similar device in place. The deficiency is so obvious that workmen will notice it and must properly complete the work by attaching the cover where it belongs.
It should be understood that the screw shell 12 may be fastened to the cover in many different ways, for instance, as shown in Fig. t. The cover has an opening to receive the screw shell 31. One end of the screw shell is flared at 32 to form an abutment to cooperate with the lower side of the cover. -The lug 33 is forced outward from the side of the screw shell to fit in a groove 34 and prevent rotation as well as longitudi nal displacement.
In the form shown in Fig. 5 the cover 35 is provided with a threaded passage into which the screw shell 36 is screwed. One end of the screw shell may be provided with a shoulder 37 to limit the inward movement. The other end of the screw shell is provided with a lip or lug 38 pressed outward into a groove 39' so as to prevent the screw shell from being unscrewed from the cover 35 after it is once in position.

3. In an electric cut-out, a base, a socket carried thereby, a center contact insulated from said socket, a detachable cover, "and a screw shell carried by said cover and having a tapered end adapted to be seated in said socket.
4. In an electric cut-out, an insulating base, a socket carried thereby and having yielding fingers, a detachable cover, a screw shell carried by said cover having an end adapted to engage said yielding fingers.
5. In a cut-out, an insulating base having a recess, a socket mounted in said recess, a circuit terminal connected to said socket, a center contact mounted within said socket but insulated therefrom, a line terminal connected to said center contact, a detachable cover and a fuse receiving member carried by said cover and adapted to engage said socket.
6. In an electric cut-out, an insulating base having a recess, a socket mounted in said recess, a center contact mounted within said socket but insulated therefrom, a detachable cover, a screw shell mounted in said cover and having a projecting end adapted to engage said socket.
7 In an electric cut-out, an insulatin base having a recess, a socket mounted t erein' having a flaring mouth, a detachable cover, a screw shell carried thereby having a tapered end adapted to engage in the flaring mouth of said socket.
8. In an electric cut-out, an insulating base having a recess therein, a socket mounted in said recess, a center contact mounted within said socket but insulated therefrom, a detachable cover, a screw shell carried thereby having an end adapted to engage said socket and means for preventing rotation of said screw shell.
9. A cut-out comprising an insulating base, a center contact for a fuse plug, a second contact disposed laterall thereof, circuit terminals connected to said contacts, an insulating cover detachably secured to said base and having an opening in line with said center contact and a screw shell for a fuse plug carried by said cover in said opening and in electrical engagement with sa d second contact when the cover is secured in place and removable with said cover.
