zen ot the United i itates, residing at Detroit,
in the county ot Wayne and State ot Michigan, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in a Compensating Jaw tor Chucks and the like; and l do hereby declare the tollowing to be a lull, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make'and use the same.
The object ot the invention is to provide an automatically compensating jaw for use in connection with shaper and milling machines, vises, lathe chucks, jigs, etc., wherever there is a possibility of encountering an irregularity in shape of the article to be grasped or clamped, so that jaws of lined and conventional torms, operating on straight lines or having parallel faces are not adapted to obtain a firm hold and maintain the object against movement or vibra' tion while the machine is in operation or while the object so engaged or grasped is being operated upon; and more specifically to provide a jaw which adapts itself to any irregularities in the surtaces ot the object which is to be gripped while maintaining a sufliciently firm pressure upon the surfaces thereot by the several gripping elements, to insure the proper positioning ot the object; and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination 0t parts of which a preterred embodiment is shown in the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view of a gripper jaw o't conventional torm provided with the compensating object-engaging element constructed in accordance with the invention;
llig. 2 is a sectional view or the same taken longitudinal; and
,lFig. 3 is an end view.
lhe jaw 10 may be ot any preterred lorm or dimensions suited to the machine in connection with which the same is to be used and in the operation ot which it is necessary to grip or engage an object to hold it in proper position to be shaped or milled or turned or otherwise operated upon, said jaw being provided with compensating gripping elements l].v consisting of pins which are slidingly fitted in guides 12 in the lace ot the jaw in terminal contact with oppositely cupped followers 13 ot lead or brass, said guides 12 being in communication with an equalizing passage it provided with a tiller ot oil, grease, wan, rubber or any equivalent thereol having a yielding characteristic and adapted when one oil the elements is repressed to convey pressure through the communicating passage it to the guides in which the other elements of the gripper are mounted with a consequent tendency to advance said other elements. The tendency ot the tollowers, by reason o't their cupped lorm is to spread so as to prevent the leakage oil the filler and maintain it in the inner ends ot the guides 12 and the communicating or equalizing passage ll, one end ot the latter being accessible by means ot a removable plug 15 so that the tiller may be introduced.
When the jaw is brought into torcible contact with an object to be gripped, therefore, any projecting portion at the surtace ot the object, shouldit be ot irregular term, will as above indicated tend to repress one or more ot the elements it and in so doing by reason ot the compensating relation of the elements, the other units thereot will be torced outward into engagement with adj acent depressed portions of the objects, and when all of the elements have been brought into firm engagement with the object, they will bear with equal torcc and gripping action upon the several ortions ot the surface ot the objects and tlieretore will serve to tirmly hold the latter during the operation ot the machine.
Having thus described the invention, what l claim is 1. it gripper jaw having independently movable gripper elements to directly contact with the surlace gripped and titted in communicating guides provided with a mobile tiller and capable olt substantial move ment in said guides whereby the elements will automatically adapt themselves to the contour of the said surtaoe.
9. ll. gripper jaw having independently movable gripper pins movable in directions at an angle to the lace ol the jaw to directly contact with the surface gripped and titted in communicating guides provided with a mobile and substantially incompressible tiller the pins extending a substantial distance beyond said lace and being unobstructed beyond the same -tor a distance to permit substantial movement thereoit, whereby the elements will automatically adapt ghemselves to the contour ot the said surace.
3. A gripper jaw having guides disposed hill tltl
