Description

` HQ FowLEn. Cigar-Boxes.
N0. 145,290. Patented Dect. 9,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY EOWLEE, or 'DETEOIE MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CIGAR-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,290, dated December 9, 1873; application filed January 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, HENRY FOWLER, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Wood and Paper (ligar-Box; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification,
in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective With the cover opened. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section with the cover closed. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section, also with the cover closed.
Like letters indicate like parts in each tigure.
The nature of this invention relates to the construction of a cigar-box, so made of Wood and paper that it will be of sufficient strength for the purpose, and at the same time be much less expensive than the Spanish-cedar cigarboxes in common use. The invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of the various parts, as more fully hereinafter set forth and described.
In the accompanying drawings is shown a cigar-box, the front A, bottom B, and back C of which are made from a single piece of straw or other board made from pulp. The ends D are each made of one piece of Wood, rabbeted at their top edges, so that their outer edges will project above the plane of the front and back by vso much as the thickness of the cover E. The inner edges of the ends are ush with the edges of the sides, thereby forming a rabbet, upon which the top rests when closed, and stiii'ening the box against end pressure. The sides and bottom being bent into shape by being suitably creased at the corners of the angles, the end pieces are in place, the bottom .edges and ends being first glued. Then the sides may be further secured by nailing to the ends, or by pasting thin slips of paper or muslin around the corners. Thecover E is also ot' straw-board, and is hinged to the top of the box, at the rear side, by means of a strip ot' cloth, and is fastened by suitable strings F to the front. Upon the under side of the cover, and from the front edge thereof, by so much as the thickness of the front, is secured the strip G, which, when the cover is closed, Will rest against the inner top edge of the front, so as to stiffen the sides against a press- .ure. The outside of the box may be covered with paper, in imitation of any desired Wood.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A cigar-box having its front, bottom, and back formed of a single piece of bent cardboard, the saine being secured to en d pieces of Wood, rabbeted as describe d,and having a card-board cover provided with a strip, G, as and for the purpose set forth.
. HENRY FOVLER.
