To all whom t vmay concern.'
Be it known that I` Ross Liana citizen of the United States, residing at Chaffeain the: lcounty of Scott and Statel offMissouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Inserting Piston Rings, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to tools for inserting piston rings, and it comprises a pair of' armsorhandles lpivotally connected to each other, a flexible band secured to one of said arms and adapted to be contracted by the movement of the other arm, and means Jfor adjusting the size of said band.
In the present invention, I providel a tool having a substantially circular receiving portion adapted to receive a piston ring, and means for. contracting said circular portion to place a piston ringA within a piston ring groove and permit a cylinder to slide over the piston.
' An Object of the invention is the provision ot' a tool for inserting piston rings which may be adjusted to various sizes for inserting rings on different size pistons.
A further object is the provision of a tool by means of which the piston ring may be contracted, thus eliminating the necessity of itting rings by hand.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown one embodiment of the invention,
ered over the piston; l
drawings, I have illustrated the method of In this showing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tool in use` Figure 2 is a top plan view of the tool, showing a piston ring in position, f
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view on line 3-3 of Figure 2, and,
Figure 4 is a simil-ar view on line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, the refer' ence numeral 1 designates a main handle which is provided with a pair of spaced lugs 2 and 3. The end of the tool is-provided with an enlarged arcuate'portion 4 and a band 5 of resilient 4metal is secured to one end of this arcuate portion. As shown, the end 6 of the band is looped about a pin or bolt 7, carried by the arcuate portion of the handle. The opposite end of the arcuate portion of the handle is provided with a recess forming upper` and lower guides 8. A roller 9 is supported in this recess, the roller being held in position by means of a bolt 10. The band 5 is passed i through this recess behind the roller and a threaded rod l1 is secured to the end of the band in any suitable manner.
An auxiliary handle 12 is pivotally mounted on the lug 3, as at 13, and this handle is providedA with a heel 14 extendingtoward themain handle. A link formed of upper aindlower plates l5 is connected to the heel of the auxiliaryhandle and the `o`pposite end of the link'is connected to apivoted lever 16, formed by a pair of plates arranged above and below the handles. This lever is'pivoted on the lug 2, as atl 17and is connected to a yoke or block 18, having an opening 19 therein. The threaded rod passes through this opening and is 'retained in adjusted position by Lva .thumb` nut 20.
It will be apparent that ywhen the auxil-r iary handle l2 is moved toward the main handle, as indicated in' dotted lines in Figure 2 of the drawings, the threaded rod will be drawn inwardly contracting the circular portion of the band 5.
In the use of the device, a piston is removed from a cylinder for inserting new rings and the rings are arranged in the y ringed grooves of the piston. These piston rings are suiiiciently resilient to cause them to project beyond the walls of the piston, and ordinarily in inserting piston rings, it is necessary to hold the ends of thering in the groove by hand as .the cylinder is low- In Figure l of the inserting rings. A piston 21 in which rings arel to be inserted, is arranged beneath the cylinder 22, the rings 23 inserted in the grooves andthe tool adjusted on the outf side ofthe ring so that in expanded position, it ts snugly around the rings. The band 5 is then contracted and is retained in this position while the cylinder block is lowered, retaining the rings in the `groove until the piston moves within the cylinder when the rings will be retained by the cylinder walls. It will be apparent that within certain limits of adjustment, the tool may be employed for any size ypiston and rings by adjusting the position of yoke 18 on the threaded rod 11. j y
It is to be understood thatthe form of my invention herewith shown and described size. and arrangement of parts may be reo sorted yto without departing from the spirit ico ol the invention or the scope of the Subjoined claims, L
Having thus described my invention, claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a main handle, an auxiliary handle pivotally mounted thereon, a resilientA ringhaving,r one end secured to said'main handle, a threaded rod secured tothe opposite end of said resilient ring, and connections between said auxiliary liandlefand said rod to contract said rin(y when the auXiliarv-hendle isy C .l A
