Description

BONELL' Apr. 0, 1923.
SHOE TOOL 7 Filed June 7 1922 Patented Apr. 10, 1923.
LOUIS BONELLI, OF UPPER ice.
MONTCLAI R, 1\TEW JERSEY.
SHOE TOOL.
- Application and June 7,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS BoNnLLr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Upper Montclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shoemakers tools and has particular reference to a cutting tool 1 constructed and adapted especially for the purpose of cutting the stitches which hold the sole to the welt.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide a cutting tool so designed as to be operated along the upper surface of the welt for the purpose of skiving or clipping off the loops of the stitches or threads through which the sole has been secured to the welt, and without damaging the welt or the upper.
In the usual practice, the shoemaker, in order to prepare the shoe for the application of a new sole,'first runs a knife along between the welt and the upper surface of the sole, the knife blade being parallel to the bottom of the sole, thereby cutting directly through the stitches and leaving the loop portions in place in the welt and which loop portions must subsequently be removed by a very tedious application of an awl or other sharp instrument before the welt is ready to receive the new sole. By the operation of my improvement however the loops are directly clipped off in an easy and rapid skiving action, and then the sole may be stripped from the welt, drawing the threads directly downward therefrom and leaving the welt clean and ready for immediate application of the new sole.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and while the invention is not restricted to the exact details of construction disclosed or suggested herein,
still for the purpose of illustrating a practical embodiment thereof reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical section on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a similar View on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
1922. Serial No. 566,530.
Fig.8 is a horizontal section of the tool on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the" drawings my improved tool comprises a body 10 of any suitable rigid material such as iron and having a tang 11 indicating a suitable means for attaching thereto a handle 12. i E
The body may be described in general as being substantially rectangular in cross section and having one side concave as indicated at 13 to conform approximately to the adjacent side portion of the-upper 14 of the shoe whose welt is indicated at 15 and sole at 16. The outer or front side of the body is extended downward forming a lip 17 to act as a guide along the edge of the welt. The body is provided with a vertical or longitudinal slot 18 extending thereinto fromthe concave side and perpendicular to said outer side, and communicating with said slot is a discharge opening 19 through which the clippings may pass freely to the outer side of the body.
The blade 20, which is the cutting instrument, must be made of the best quality steel or its equivalent, the same being fitted in the slot 18 with its cutting or chisel edge projecting below the bottom of the main portion of the body in position to engage and sever the loops 21 of the sole-attaching threads or stitches 22 when the instrumentv is forced along as indicated in Figs. 1 and'2. The blade is adjustable up and down or longitudinally of the body for several reasons, such as to determine the distance to which its cutting edge projects below the bottom of 90 the body, and also to compensate for the natural wear upon the blade incident to use and resharpening. As a suitable means to control the position or adjustment of the blade I provide a finger piece in the nature of a set screw 23 tapped through a part of the body and having its end or point abutting directly against one side of the blade forcing and holding thereby the shorter side of the plate squarely against the untapped side of the body. As a further means for locking and holding the blade I provide a plate 24 which bears against the shoulder 20 of the blade. The plate is shown provided with slots 25 through which any suitable form of screws 26 project into the upper portion of the body 10. By virtue of the slots the plate may be adjusted to follow the longitudinal adjustment of the blade and so. will always lock the blade from slipping or tilting when the screws are tightened.
The tool is relatively simple and cheap to construct and has been found in practice to be peculiarly useful for the purpose indicated.
I claim:
1. A shoe tool of the nature set forth comprising a rigid body having a guide lip projecting downward along one side and beyond the main portion thereof, said body having a slot formed therein at an angle to the lipped side thereof. and a cutting blade fitted in said slot with its edge projecting below the body and terminating in 'a plane between the bottom of the main portion of the body and the free edge of the lip.
2. A tool set forth in claim 1 in which the slotted side of the-body remote from the lip is concave to approximate the form of the shoe upper along which the tool is operated while the lip guides the-tool along the edge of the welt.
3. A tool as set forth in claim 1 in which the cutting blade is adjustable longitudithe sideof the body from. which the lip pro jects downward.
5. The herein described shoe tool comprising a body having a. vertical slot extending longitudinally therein, a cutting blade fitted in said slot and having a projecting shoulder alongone edge and means to lock the blade in position, the locking means includinga plate fitted against one side of the body and whose lower edge abuts directly against said shoulder. v
6. A device as set forth in claim 5 in which the blade is adjustable longitudinally of the body and the plate is provided with slots through which clamping means project and providing for the adjustment of the plate along with the blade. substantially as set forth.
in testimony whereof I affix my signature.
' LOUIS BONELLT.
