Be it known that I,'HANs S'rnorinn, a citizen of Austria, residing at Brooklyn, New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Illuminating Devices, of which 'the following is a specication.

One of the objects of this invention is to provide means for illuminating the point of a pencil or other like writing implement.

Another object is the provision of means for directing the emanations of radium or other luminous compound on to the pencil point.

A further object is to provide means whereby the device may be readily attached, detached or changed from one pencil to another as desired.

These and other like objects are attained by the novel combination and arrangementof parts, hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure and in which Figure 1 is an elevational view of a pencil with the device attached as made in accordance with the invention.

Figure 2 is a similar fragmentary view enlarged, a portion of the device being shown in section.

Figure 3 is a further enlarged sectional view, taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 2.

Figure 4 is al modification of the device showing a hollow spherical element containing a luminous substance.

Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Figure 4.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the numeral 10 designates a conventional pencil body, conical at one end and showing the lead 11 projecting therefrom.

Slidably engaged uponthis body of the pencil is a U-shaped spring clip 12 having an integral extending spring` arm 13, slightly oii'set and terminating in a generally semispherical element 14, its` open or concave side being toward the pencil.

Secured interiorly of the concave element 14, by the inturned curved bead 15, formed around the circumferential edge of the element, is a thin semi-spherical transparent glass cover 16 its radius being less than that of the outer element, thus providing a parallel space 17 therebetween, in which radium or other luminous compound may be held and the emanations of light directed towards the pencil point.

In the modification, shown in Figure 4, a similarly shaped spring 2O partially encircles the pencil body 10 and is slidable thereon. An integral extending spring arm 21 is provided at its front end with an arcuate curved spring clip 22 adapted to clamp about the neck portion ofthe hollow, spherical bulb 28 in which is hermetically sealed radium or other luminous substances capable of emitting light.

A parabolic reiiector 24 has an extending 'IT-shaped end, the side elements of which are folded about the spring arm 21 forming a slide 25 for obtaining focal adjustment with the bulb.

It will readily be seen that the device can be easily removed when it is desired to sharpen the pencil and as easily replaced and adjusted to illuminate the pencil point.

In the preferred form, 'the luminous element may be introduced in the form of a dry powder or the inner surfaces of either of the elements 14 or l16 may be coated with a suitable luminous paint, and as no claim is made to the nature of the luminous composition, a considerable latitude in selection is evident.

Although the foregoing is descriptive of the preferred embodiments of the invention, it will be apparent that minor changes may be made in its construction without depart ing from the spirit of the invention or confiicting with the scope of the claims hereto appended.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
