VERNON C. GETZ, OF INDIANAPOLIS, AND WILLIAM L. WESTBROOK, OF WABASH,
INDIANA.
SANITARY CHICK roun'r.
Application filed April 18,
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we. VERNON C. Gary. and *VILLIAM L. W'asrnnoon, citizens of the United States, and residents of Indianapolis and lVabash, respectively, counties of Marion and Vabash, respectively, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Sanitary Chick Fount; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to a chick fountain, and the chief object thereof is to provide a sanitary and relatively indestructible attachment for afruit jar or can of the safety type.
Another object of the invention is to form said attachment or transforming means of a material which can be molded and formed in a single operation, and which thereafter requires no further treatment.
The chief-feature of the invention consists in providing a substitute closure for a safety fruit jar or can, which closure is preferably of molded material, and more especially is of glass, whereby the same is transparent and can be kept sanitary by washing without danger of rust formation, either while in use or due to cleansing.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a longitudinal. sectional view of a safety jar with the cover and fountain forming attachment associated therewith. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same.
In the drawings 10 indicates the body portion of a fruit jar or can which is of the conventional type having a restricted neck 11, which neck is provided with a peripheral flange 12 and a second peripheral flange 13. Adjacent the peripheral flange 13 and at diametrically opposite points, there is formed a boss 14: having a recess 15 therein. The cover locking means comprises a U-shaped piece of wire 16 having the inwardly turned ends 17 which are positioned in a loop 18 formed adjacent each end of a bail 19. The ends 20 of the bail 19 are seat-able in the recesses 15, and when the bail is positioned as shown in Fig. 1, the cover locking loop 1922. Serial No. 555,152. 4
16 is maintained in the cover locking position. When the bail is moved upwardly along the neck of the can, the cover locking means may be removed from the cover locking position and moved upon its pivotal support (the loops 18) and rearwardly, thereby releasing the cover.
Herein the usual cover has been replaced by a modified form of cover or closure, and herein said modified form of cover or closure includes an annular rim 21 which is engageable upon a gasket 22 positioned adjacent the peripheral flange or ledge 12 to seal the opening of the The body portion 28 of the cover or closure is extended at its central point, as at 24, and said extended portion is provided with a notch 25, which is adapted to receive the locking member 16. The notch 25 is formed by the two opposite projecting portions 26, as shown in Fig. 2. The cover is provided with an opening, and a portion of the cover is offset therefrom, as at 27, and forms a trough. In order to prevent rolling of the cylindrical jar 10 when the trough-forming cover is associated therewith, a flange 28 is provided, and herein said flange provides a fiat edge 29. The flange 28, as shown clearly in Fig. 1, is an outward extension from the jar engaging portion 21. It will be apparent from the foregoing that the closure when formed of glass is not only transparent and shows the water level therethrough, but also may be kept in a sanitary condition, by frequent washings. In metallic devices heretofore employed, such as illustrated in Patent No. 1,372,946, the metallic portions became coated with rust while in use, and it was with difficulty that said metallic devices could be kept in a sanitary condition. Another feature of the invention is that chicks who feed and drink by sight will follow around the jar until they come to the aperture defined by the trough 27. In metallic devices the chicks have endeavored to drink from the transparent jar and have failed to find the water. since the non-transparent trough cover did not disclose the same. With the present device, in addition to the sanitary feature hereinbefore described, the chicks are enabled to see the water through the closure device.
The invention claimed is:
l. A sanitary chick watering device comprising a safety jar, cover locking means thereon, and a transparent cover therefor said jar having a fount-forming trough having a portion for abutting the jar, anformed therein, said cover being retained 10 other portion for engagement with the lockupon said jar by said cover locking means. ing means, and a fount-forming trough In Witness whereof, We have hereunto at- 5 formed therein. fixed our signatures.
2. A sanitary chick Watering device comprising a transparent jar, cover locking VERNON C. GETZ; means therefor, and a transparent cover for WILLIAM L. XVESTBROOK.
