siding at Amherst, in the county of Hanipshire and State of Massachusetts. has in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Seal Envelopes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in envelopes and its leading object is to provide an envelope having an inner sealing flap extending from the back wall to which the outer sealing flap be gummed or secured in such manner that the inner sealing flap will be wholly concealed by the outer sealing flap and the strain of the contents, when more than the ordinary thickness, will be distributed on the main sealing flap so as to prevent accidental opening or rupture thereof and also to prevent tampering with the contents of the envelope.

With the above and other objects in view, this invention relates to certain new and useful constructions, combinations and. arrangement of parts, clearly described in the following specification and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 1 is a rear View of an envelope embodying my invention, showing the main sealing flap in open position extended laterally from the body of the envelope and the inner sealing flap formed on the central. section of the back wall of the envelope.

Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view showing the main sealin flap in closed position. 7 Figure 3 is a rear view of a modified form of the envelope showing the auxiliary flap formed on the end flaps composing a part of the back wall.

Referring to the accompanying drawings 5 designates the front wall of an envelope to which the end flaps 6 and 7 are connected and an intermediate back wall flap 8 also connected. The main sealing flap 9, of the usual construction extends from the front wall 5 and is provided with a gummed or adhesive marginal portion 9 adapted to be gummed or otherwise secured directly to the back wall composed of the flaps 6, 7'and 8.

An inner or auxiliary sealing flap 10 is provided on the back wall flap 8 and is bent outwardly against said flap 8 and coated with adhesive gum or other material so that it can be gummed or otherwise securedto the inner face of the main sealing flap 9.

In Figure 3 I show'a modified form of the invention wherein the auxiliary sealing flap 11 is formed upon the end flaps 12 andlS which are extended so as to overlap each other and which are secured to each other so as to form the body of the back wall, the front wall of the envelope having a flap 14: folded over the flaps 12 and 13 and gummed thereto to complete the back wall andalso having a main sealing flap 15 provided with a gummed or adhesive marginal portion 15 whereby the main flap may be secured to the back flap composed of the flaps 12, 18, and lat. The auxiliary or inner sealing flap 11 is secured directly to the main flap 15 against the inner side of said main flap 15.

' lVhen the inner flap in either form of the invention is secured directly to the inner side or face of the main flap thetcndency of the back flap to separate from the front wall and to disrupt the connection between the main sealing flap and the back'wall will be effectively resisted and any tendency of the contents of the envelope to work out or become lost through the separation of the main sealing flap from the back wall willbe also prevented. The envelope can be constructed with the same mechanism used for the construction of the standard envelope and adds but a fraction to the cost of manufacture.
