Description

Mar. 6, 1923.
1,447,608 (3. WAssER ET AL SOAP CUTTER:
Filed Aug. 18,-1921 Patented Mar. 6, 1923.
HTED STATES irst CHARLES WASSER AND RUSSELL W. WIRSHING, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNORS TO THE MIAMI MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF DAYTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
soar CUTTER.
Application filed August 18, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLEs Wassnn and RUssELL W. WIRSHING, citizens of the United States, residing in the city of Dayton, county of Montgomery, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soap Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of our invention 1s to provide a simple, compact and economical device that is adapted to be attached to a table or other object foreasily and efficiently cutting or shaving soap. I
It is another object of our invention to provide simple and efficient clamping means for easily and firmly securing our soap cutter to a table or other object.
Other important and incidental objects will be brought out in the following specification and particularly set forth in the subjoined claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view, partly broken away, of our soap cutter. Figure 2 is an end View thereof. Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the same. Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the cutting disc. And Figure 5 is a side view of the latter in its inverted position.
Throughout the specification and drawings, similar reference characters denote corresponding parts.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a detailed description of one form of embodiment of our invention, the numeral 1 designates a ring member constructed of aluminum or other suitable metal, having a top inwardly projecting flange portion 2 that is annular in shape. Projecting downwardly from one side of the ring member 1 is a relatively flat supporting portion 3.
Adapted to be fitted upon the ring member 1 is a cover 4 constructed of aluminum or other suitable metal. This cover 4 has a downwardly projecting annular rim portion 5 that is adapted to fit against the side periphery of the ring member 1, and is secured to the flange portion 2 of the latter as follows: Provided in the said flange portion 2 of the ring member 1, are two slots 6, 6 preferably about 180 apart. Adapted to enter each one of these slots 6, 6, is an approximately right-angled tongue 7 that is 7 turned down from they cover 4. When the latter is applied to the ring member 1, with the tongue portions 7, .7 Withm 1511611 respee Serial N0. 493,361.
tive slots 6, 6 in said ring member, the cover 4 may be readily turned to bring the free end portions of the tongues 7, 7 under the flange portion 2 of the ring member to firmly hold said cover upon the latter. (See Figures 1 and 2.) While we have provided the means just described for removably connecting the cover to the ring member 1, any other suitable means may be employed for this purpose without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Preferably turned up fromthe middle portion of the cover 4, is a hopper or soap receiving part 8 that is rectangular in longitudinal section. Resting upon an annular ledge'portion 9 of the flange 2 of the ring member 1, a slight distance below the cover 4, is the rim portion of a cutting disc 10. Cut in the latter. is a series of radial, triangular slots 11, the piece of metal that formerly filled each slot being turned down at right angles to the disc as shown in Figures 3, 4 and 5. The radial edge 12 of each slot opposite the turned down metal piece 13 thereof, is turned upwardly slightly above the plane of the disc and sharpened to cut or shave the soap that is inserted in the hopper 8 above, when the disc 10 is turned by the means nowto be described. One slot 11 extends to the center of the disc to effect a full center cut. The turned down pieces at the edges of the slots act as flanges to direct the flow of shavings to the receptacle beneath.
Provided in the disc 10 near its marginal edge, is a circumferential series of pin holes 14. Adapted to enter these holes from below the disc, are the teeth of a pinion 15 fast on the inner end of a shaft 16 that is journaled in a hollow boss 17 that projects outwardly from the supporting portion 3 of the ring member 1. Secured to the outer end of the shaft 16 is a crank handle 18 which, when turned, will rotate the disc 10, that is free to turn upon the ledge portion 9 of the flange 2. When the disc 10 is rotated, the soap that is cut or shaved by its knife-edged slots 11 will fall through the latter into a receptacle 18 resting upon a table 19 to which the cutting device is secured by the following means:
Referring to Figures 2 and 8, there is riveted or otherwise secured to the supporting portion 3 of the ring member 1, a slightly curved. angle-plate 20 whose end portions are at approximately a right angle to each other. Provided in the upper end of tl1e plate 20 is a transverse slot 21 through Which there loosely projects a turned-up end 22 of an )iece 23 there is aaalied a- Win nut 25.
(See Figures 2 and 3.) After the lower end of the angle plate 20 is brought over and thelower end of the arched piece 23 is positioned under, the edge portion of the table 19, the wing nut 25 is turned toti htly press the rounded end of the archer? piece 23 against the edge portion ofthe table. The latter Will then be tightly gripped by the clamp just described to firmly hold the soap cutter upon the table. While We employ the-above described clamping device. for attaching our soap cutter to the table 19, any other'suitable meansmay be employed for this purpose Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
We do not Wish to be limited to the details oi construction and arrangement herein shown and described, and any changes or .modifications may be made therein Within the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having described our invention, We claim: Ina device of the type described, the combination With a ring member having a top inwardly projecting flange portion and a supporting portion, ofa cover fitted on said ring member, a hopper turned up from the middle portion of said cover, the flange portion of the ring member having an inner annular ledge part, a slotted, cutting disc free to turn upon said ledge part of the ring member below said cover, and means for rotating. sa d disc.
In: testimony whereof We have hereunto set our hands this 15th day of August, 19:21.
CHARLES l/VASSER.
