T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK B. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jefferson City, in the county of Cole arid 5 State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wall Sockets, ofwhic-h the following is a specification and the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in wall-sockets in which a holding bolt is received and held to secure any part of a building structure as posts, studding, partitions or any other part of a like'nature to a wall; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide ameans to retain the socket in the building wall with said means.
afforded with facilities for cutting away the material of which the wall is comp osed; second, to provide grooves for allowingthe passage of the wall material as it is cut away by the socket retaining means; third, to provide means for manually securing the socket in the wall; and, fourth, to provide a post holding bolt receiving chamber.
1 I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing in Which Figure 1 is a plan or topview; Fig. 2, a so sectional elevation of the socket on the line A-B of Fig. 1 as it appears in position in the wall and showing a post being held to the building wall by a holding bolt inserted in the socket; and Fig. 3, a side elevation 5 of the socket showing a wall material receiving groove and one of the plurality of Y threaded socket retaining means.
Similar numerals refer to similar throughout the several views.
The cylindrical cup shaped body 1 has an open end 2, into which, from the bottom wall of the body there extends a wrench receiving projection 3 having a screwthreaded hole 4.- through it and the bottom wall of the body for receiving the post holding bolt 10, which secures the post 9 to the building wall 8 as shown in Fig. 2.
Radiating externally from the cylindrical wall of the body 1 there are a plurality of parts one projection to the adjoining one there is a continuous screw-thread formed circumferentially with the cylindrical wall. The sides of the projections 5 are tapered socket retaining projections 5 on which from as shown at 6, Fig. l and the grooves 7 are longitudinally disposed in the cylindrical wall as shown for the purposes as hereinafter described in the method of securing the socket and the post to the building wall.
The method of inserting and securing the 0 socket in a building wall or ceiling of concrete, brick or wood is as follows:
In the building wall to which it is desirone to fasten a post, a hole a little larger in diameter than of the outside diameter of the cylindrical wall of the body 1, is made deep enough from the face of the wall 8 to recive the whole socket. Channels for the passage of the projection 5 may also be incorporated with this hole in the building wall.
After the socket has been driven by a hammer or other appropriate means into the hole made until the outer end of the body 1 is nearly flush with the face of the building wall, a wrench is inserted in the open end 2 and gripping the projection 3 is manually rotated thereby forcing the screwthreads 5 to cut into the building wall by means of the cutting sides 6. The wall material as it is cut away falls into the grooves 30 7 which permit the carrying away of the material. l/Vhen the outer end of the socket has been made flush with the face of the building wall by means of the pitch of the screw-threads drawing the socket deeper into the hole it is held in place by means of the screw-threads and the building wall material between the projections 5 and the face of the wall.
To fasten the post 9 to the building wall 8, the screw-threaded end of the holding bolt 10 is passed through the post and screwed into the threaded. hole 4: of the socket.
What I claim is:
l. A wall-socket comprising a cylindrical cup shaped body having on its exterior surface a plurality of socket retaining projections longitudinally disposed grooves in the cylindrical body wall, a wrench receiving projection extending inwardly from the bottom wall of the socket, and a receiving chamber for a post holding bolt.
2. A wall-socket comprising a cylindrical cup shaped body having on its exterior surface a plurality of socket retaining projections provided with wall material cutting edges and on all f which projections there is formed one continuous screw-thread circumferenti agl with the aforesaid cylindrical body, longitudinally disposed Wall material receiving grooves adjoining each socket retaining projection provided on the exteriorl'surface of the cylindrical body Wall, a Wrench receiving projection extending inwardly from the bottom wall of the socket, and a screwthreaded bore extending through the bot- 10 tom wall of the socket and the wrench gripping projection for receiving a post holding bolt.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses,
- FRANK B. MILLER.
