Be it known that BERNA D'VAN LEER, subject of the Queen of the Netherlands,
residing at Amsterdam, Kingdom of the Netherlands, has invented certain new and;
In the known closures of this kind there are arranged at. the top of the screw cap two projections, lying diametrically opposite" to one another, both of which are bored horizontally; there is also provided'on theside of the neck of these vessels a lug'whioh is similarly bored. v
For the purpose of seallng these known closures a cord or a metal wire is'drawn' through one orthrough both ofthe hor1- zont-al bores provided on the screw cap, and also through the lug arranged on the neck of the vessel, after which the ends of the cord or or" the metal wire are passed between two little sealing plates or sealing. strips and fastened together by means of v pliers.
. In large works, particularly in large petrol warehouses where thousands of vessels are sealed daily, this sealing needs a large ex penditure of time, and thisis naturally a defect. I c
A further disadvantage of these known closures consists in the factthat the pro jections, lying diametrically opposite toone another, which are arranged on the" screwcap do not afford an adequate security against opening of the closure.

By opening in this way, which is largely employed,- the ,metal strip or other similar petrol vessels used for the purpose are to a large extent worn out, they [are considerably bruised, made leaky and otherwise damaged, so that in a short time thev become unsuitable for any further use;

"The characteristic feature of the invention consists in the factthat by thearrangement of a suitable number of slots, or openings 1n flanges or rims, which are arranged on the one hand on the screw cap and on the other hand on the neck of the vessel, and which vflanges or rims maybe either circular or segmental or of any other form, there are provided a number of slots or other openings which on screwing the cap on to the neck of the vessel come to lie more or less one above the'other. I
The purp'ose which is thereby achieved is that these slots always come one above the other in such a manner that in every posi tion of the screw cap on the neck they more or less cover one another and enable the sealing means which may consist of a cord capable of being sealed with lead or oi? a device, to be drawn through. i
A" further characteristic feature of the invent-ion consists in the fact that the seal- 'ing of the screw cap on to'the neck ofthe vessel by means of these slots or other openlngs provided in the flanges or rims can be effected not only by cords capable otbeing sealed withlead, butby metallic strips which in themselves form the sealing device.
I A thirdcharacteristic feature of the invention consists in the fact that there are provided both on the screw cap and on the neck of the vessel laterally projecting rims or flanges, provided with slots, in which these slots are so arranged that in every position of the screw cap the slot which is arranged in the laterally projecting rim of the screw cap adjusts itself wholly or part vertically above the slot -which is situated in the rim provided on the neck of the vessel.
This may be effected by providing slots of about equal size in both rims, but making the separation otthe slots from one an other in the one rim different to the mutual separation of the slots'in the second rim.
By the arrangement of the laterally projecting rims there-is achieved by the present invention the advantage that the pro? jections arranged on the screw cap are dispensed with and can be replaced by a single projection which is given a triangular, square or other shape so that the screw cap can only be opened by means of a sultable tool.
It is not necessary that the screw cap and the neck of the vessel should have rims running all the way round, and it is sufiicient it for example a rim running all the way round is provided on the neck only, and if a rim is arranged on the screw cap extending along a portion only or its circumference, or vice versa if a segmental rim is provided on the neck and a rim running all the Way round on the screw cap.
The number of slots provided on both these rims may be as many as desired. The slots must. however, be so adjusted one above the other that they leave sufficient room between them to allow of the insertion of the sealing device.
The construction may be carried out in such a manner that in the rim of the screw cap for example there are provided only three slots.
One of the forms of construction in which this apparatus can be constructed consists in arranging in one of the rims, for example in that of the screw cap, three slots the length of which is equal to that of the slots in the rim of the neck of the vessel, and which are also of the same length as the distance which separates the' individual slots in the rim oi": the neck of the vessel one from another.
On the other hand in the above mentioned form of construction the distance between the slots in the rim or" the screw cap amounts to one quarter of the length of the slots.
It now the screw cap is screwed on to the neck, there is formed, in consequence of the difierence in these distances between the slots in the two rims, a space serving for the insertion of the fastening or sealing cord which amounts to at least about live-eighths of the length of the slots.
These "forms of construction can naturally be constructed in any other desired dimensions.
For the purpose of sealing the fastening the cord or the metal wire is according to the present invention drawn through two openings only, very conveniently situated in relation to one another. These openings can, by a suitable choice of the length of the slots, be enlarged to any desired extent. Further, by arranging the laterally projecting rims in such, a manner that the one is situated on the er side of the screw cap and the second on the upper side of the neck immediately below the portion of the neck provided with a screw thread, the openings can be brought so near to one another that to a certain extent they form only one opening.

The ends of the metallic strip can for example also be formed as the two portions of a press-stud; in this case these two ends can be fasten'ed'together and pressed against the neck of the vessel by pressing the press- I stud Hat by means of pliers gripping round the neck of the vessel.
In the accompanying drawing is illus trated a closure of the old type and a form of construction, given by way of example, of the closure according to the present invention and there is shown in:
Figure 1 a side view and in Figure 2 a view from above of the scalable closure according to the known constructions Figure 3 illustrates a side view or the closure according to the present invention;
Figure 4 is a view from above of the screw cap and Figure 5 a view ir'om above of the neck of the vessel Figure 6 illustrates a vertical section through the closure to be sealed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 7 shows a view from above and Figure 8 a side view of the metal strip used according to the present invention and serving as a seal.
Figure 9 shows on an enlarged scale a side view of a metal strip, serving as a seal, the ends of which on being fastened together are atthe same time pressed against the neck of the vessel.
In the closure of the older type (Figures 1 and 2) 1 is the neck, which is arranged on the vessel and is provided with a lug 2 with horizontal bore 6; is the screw cap which is screwed on to the neck and carries projections t in which are provided horizontal bores I v In the closure according to the present invention (Figures 3 to 6) there is provided on the neck a rim 7, running all the way round. which is furnished with slots 9; the screw cap 3 carries a square projection 11 and is on a portion of its circumference furnished with a rim 8 provided with slots 10.
After the screw cap 3 has been screwed as far as possible on to the neck and tightened jecting edges 15 of the end 1 L catch round the end 13. The end 13 is then by means of a suitable tool by the help for example of pliers gripping round the neck of the vessehenclosed in the end is by bendmg over the edges 15 and the end 14; is pressed against the neck 1.
In the form of construction of theseal illustrated in Figure 9 the metal strip 16 serving as seal is formedin the shape of.a-
stirrup and is provided at its ends with two protuberances 17 and 18 lying one within the other. After this metal strip has been drawn through the slots 9 and 10, the pros tuberances 17 and 18 are by means of pliers gripping round the neck 1 pressed fiat, in such a manner that they form two folds lying one within the other, which are atthe same time pressed against the neckl;
After the breaking of the seal the screw cap can onlybe unscrewed by the help of a tool engaging with the projection 11. Any kind of metal seal can be employed, for example lead sealing, or metal strips pressed one into the other by a'tool, or the like.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention,
and in what manner the same is to be per-' formed, I declare that what 1 claim is:
1. A closure provided with a seal, for ves sels of every kind characterized by thearrangement of a suitable differently spaced number of slots or openings in flanges or rims which are arranged on the one hand on the screw cap and on the other hand on the neck of the vessel in such a manner that, on screwing the cap on to the neck of the vessel, these slots are so adjusted one against the other, that in every position of the screw cap on the neck a pair of slots are substantially superposed oneover the other and enable the sealing device (metal strip or the like) to be drawn through,-

4. A form of construction of the apparatus in accordance with claim 3 the feature of which isthat the rim of the screw cap (3) is provided with three slots, which are of the same length as the slots (9) which are situatedin the rim (7 arranged on the neck (1) of the vessel, and of the same size as the distances at which these slots are situated one from another, and a further feature of which is that the slots (10) in the rim (8) arranged on the screw cap (3) are at a distance from each other the length of which amounts to aboutone quarter of the length of the slots situated in the screw cap.
5. A form of construction of the apparatus in accordance with claim 4: the feature of which is that the laterally projecting rim 8 is arranged at the foot of the screw cap, and
.the laterally projecting rim 7 at the uppermost end of the neck of the vessel, the latter being, however, immediately below the screw thread (19) of the neck (1) of the vessel.
