J. VIOZZ! MECHANICAL HORSE Fled'DeC. l2, 192] swr 5; filari a l? "en MECHANCL HORSE.
Application led December 12, 1921.
To @ZZ whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that Josiirii Viozzi, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Hamilton, in the county oi' Wentworth, and Province of .Ontario, Canada, has invented certain new and useiul Improvements in a Mechanical Horse, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in toy vehicles representing mounts such as horses for example, that may be mechanically propelled along the ground by the rider, and consists essentially ot an image mounted on two rear wheels and one for ward wheel, a drive pulley connected by a suitable belt to a pulley on the rear axle, stirrups connected to crank hangers co-operating with the drive pulley, steering column and novel means tor guiding the vehicle by right and lei't pull upon reins.
The object ot" the invention is to provide a vehicle ot' the class specied which affords the maximum of reality to the juvenile rider, inasmuch that the riders feet occupy genuine stil-rups which are used as a means for actuating the propulsion mechanism, and that the vehicle is guided by mechanism designed to outwardly appear to be reins and bit.
A further object is to provide such a vehicle which will be simple, durable, eiiicient, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
TVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, coinbination, and arrangement of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure l is a side elevation of the invention;
Figure 2 is a rear elevation thereof; Figure 3 is an enlarged detail side view of the image;
Figure l is an enlarged detailed top view ot the steering column and forward wheel;
Figure 5 is a side view Figure 4;
Figure 6 is an enlarged edge view of a fragment et' the driving` belt;
Figure 'T is an enlarged tace view of the belt;
Figure 8 is an enlarged of the drive pulley; and,
detailed top view oli' that shown in Serial lilo. 521,319.
Figure 9 is an enlarged sectional side view thereof taken on the line 9-9 in F igure 8.
A Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
lVithin the body portion of the image is a flanged drive pulley 2 rigid on the horizontal shaft 3 having bearing in journals 4, and rigid on the ends ot said shai't are crank hangers 5 extending in opposite directions to each other. il pair of stirrups 6 are secuied to i'leXible straps .7 which are pivotally connected to the free ends of said crank hangers and depend therefrom by gravita` tional torce.
Journaled horizontally in the rear hoofs or' the image is au axle shaft 8 having rigid on its end parts ground wheels 9, and pr vided intermediately of the legs of the image with a flanged pulley l0.
This latter pulley is connected to the pulley 2 by a belt ll which is deilected by detlector sheaves l2 journaled in the body of the image, in order to conceal as much as possible oi it within the body. The belt ll is provided with a plurality of equally spaced studs 1 3 which engage correspondingly spaced pockets i3 in both pulleys in order that the belt shall not slip or slide thereorer. The vehicle is propelled by rotating the pulley 2 with the feet positioned in the stirrups 6.
he steering column l5 is rotatably sleeved in the neck et' the image, and is provided with a rigid T-head 16 to the ends oi which cables 17 are connected. These cables pass through a passage way provided in the top of the neck and which continues through the lower part of the head. from whence they pass around grcoved idler sheaves 1S rotatable on a rigid shaft i9 secured in the jaws of the image. The Jree ends of said cables are secured to reins 20 by which the steering column l5 may be rotated in either direction by corresponding pull on the reins. The lower end part of the steering' column is pi'i'lvided with a rigid biturcated meinbel` 2l in which a ground wheel 22 is journalled Having new fully described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In an apparatus of the class the combination with an image ot a mount, an axle journaled in the rear hoofs of the image, ground wheels on said axle` a flanged pulley rigid on said axle, a drive pulley described,
llO
journalled in the body o1e the image, crank hangers co-operating With Jche drive pulley, stirrups pivotally suspended from the Jfree ends of said crank hangers, a belt connect- .5 ing said pulleys, a. plurality of equidistantly spaced studs on said belt engaging correspondingly spaced pockets in said flange pulley and drive pulley, a steering column rotatably sleeved in the neck of the 10 image, a forward ground Wheel connected touthe steering column, a 'head on the upper end of said column, sheaves journaled in the inondah of the image, cables secured to the free ends of said T-head and passing around said sheaves,vand reins connected to 15 the free ends of said cables.
In testimony whereo l have afHXed my signature.
JOSEPH VOZZI.
