IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-GATES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,291, dated November 4, 1873; application filed June 21, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB G. Ronnnn, of Gomer, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Gate, of which the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved gate partly in section; and Fig. 2 an end view of the gate, partly in section, on line 0 0, Fig. 1, showing its connection with the main side post.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.

In the drawing, A represents the supportingframe, in which the gate B slides. Frame A consists of two vertical side pieces, a a, of which the stronger piece, a, is placed sidewise of main post G of the gate, turning with its lower end in a recessed block, b, which is set securely into the ground. The upper part of piece a is recessed and turns in arms (I, which are applied to the top of main post 0. The pieces a a are laterally connected by top piece a, diagonal brace f, and horizontal piece g,

l which are firmly applied to each other by bolts or other suitable means. The vertical pieces a a, and also the diagonal brace f, are recessed sufficiently for the passage of the horizontal pieces h of gate B. The upper piece h of gate B is carried by rollers z' of pieces a a, so that gate B slides easily in frame A forward and backward on the same. The vertical end pieces h of gate B limit the extent of sliding the frame A and gate B, being, however, so constructed that that part of the gate which extends beyond piece a balances the fore part of the gate and firame A, so that the whole gate swings readily and easily in bearings b d. The front piece h of the gate is provided with a ring or handle, 1, at the top end, and loops or handles m at both sides, so that persons on horseback or on foot may easily slide the gate backand forth for passing through. A block, a, at the lower end of main front post 0, serves to support the gate B thereon when the same is closed. Pins or bolts 0 of post 0 or their equivalent lock the gate by projecting on both sides of end piece h of the gate. The gate 13 can also be swung open either way around piece a without sliding, as the distance of piece a from main post 0 is of sufficient width to allow the rear piece h of the gate to pass between them.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The frame A, consisting of vertical pieces a a, oblique side pieces 6 f, rollers 'i i, and lateral piece g, the said parts being constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
