UNITED STATES SUMNER E. WEBSTER, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DRAWING BOARD.
Application med iuly' 15,
T o all `111/111771, t may concern Be it known that I, SUMNER E. Tns'rma a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drawing Boards, of which the following is a specification This invention relates to drawing boards and an object of the invention is to provide a drawing board and straight edges associated therewith which will materially facilitate drafting and eliminate the use of angles thereby providing a drawing board wherein the necessary straight' edges and angles are provided in such a manner as to have them always ready for use and eliminate the need of several different instruments.
Another object of the invention isto provide a drawing board having guides along two sides thereof upon which guides are adjustably mounted protractors each of which has a straight edge pivotally Connected thereto, the protractors arranged to permit free and quick adjustment of the straight edges to any desired angle' within 1H() degrecs.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description and in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a top plan of the improved drawing board.
Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the board.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section taken on the line of Fig. 1.
Fig. t is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the. improved drawing board structure comprises the drawing board 1 of usual construction which has brackets Q positioned at the ends of two of its right angled disposed edges. Guide rods 3 are supported by each pair of brackets Q in spaced relation to the adjacent edges of the board 1 and sliders 4 are slidably mounted upon the rods 3. The sliders 4 each comprise cylindrical portions 5 which engage about the rods and has a protractor extension 5 formed thereon. A pivoting pin 6 for the straight edge T rises from the cylindrical portion or barrel 5 of the slider structure 4 and it is threaded and has a thumb nut 8 mounted .thereon which is adapted to engage against the upper surface of the straight edge T and 1921. Serial No. 484,950.
clamp it in adjusted positions against the protractor 5. The protractor 5 may be graduated with any desired scale to permit accurate angular adjusting of the straight edge. In use, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing two straight edges are used as well as two slider structures 4 and the constructions are similar, therefore, only one has been described.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be apparent that by use of the straight edges T the use of triangles may be disposed with as well as a protractor in that the improved device provides both the straight edges and protractor combined, permitting the use of scale, triangles, protractor, and ruler in one instrument all flinctioning under one control thereby saving considerable time in the making of drawings and eliminating the number of instruments a draftsman has to use and keep track of.
The straight edges 7 are graduated and it is to be understood that they may be graduated in any linear scale desired.
It will also be evident that, owing to its simplicity of construction, they may be manufactured at a reasonable price, and owing to its mechanical construction a high degree of accuracy may be attained by its use.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. In a drawing board structure, the combination of a drawing board` guide rods supported along two right angle disposed edges of said board. sliders mounted on said guide rods. and straight edges pivotally car ried by said sliders.
2. In a drawing board structure, the combination with a drawing board, of guide rods supported along two right angularl)Y disposed sides of said drawing board. sliders slidably mounted upon said rods. straight edges pivotally connected to said sliders, and means for holding said straight edges in adjusted positions relative to said sliders.
3. In a drawing board structure, the combination with a drawing board, of guide rods supported along two right angularly disposed sides of said drawing board, sliders slidably mounted upon said rods, protractor extensions formed upon said sliders, straight edges pvotally connected to said sliders, and means for holding said straight edges in adjusted position relative to said protraetor extensions.
4. In a drawing board structure, the combination with a drawing board, of ide rods supported along two right angu arly disposed sides of said drawing board, sliders slidably mounted upon said rods, pivot pins formed upon said sliders, straight edges mounted upon said pivot pins, clamping means onsaid pivot pins for holding said straight edges in adjusted positions.
5. In a drawing board structure, the combination with a drawing board, of guide rods supported along two right angularly disposed sides of said drawing board, sliders slidably mounted upon said rods, pivot ins formed upon said sliders, straight e ges mounted upon said pivot pins, olampin means on said pivot pins for holding sai straight edges in adjusted positions, and protractor extensions formed upon said sliders.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
