To all to 7mm it may concern Be it known that I, BAYARD C. MURDEN, citizen of the United States, residing at ihliami, in the county of Dads and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive F ire Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
. This invention relates to improvements in locomotive fire boxes and more particularly to an improved refractory brick employed in the lining of the fire box of an oil burning engine.
Prior to the present invention ordinary coal burning locomotive fire boxes have been reconstructed for the purpose of burning oil in the fire box instead of coal, and in order to accomplish this purpose the fire box has been provided with an oil burner and with fire bricks to protect the table and tube sheets from the intense heat generated by the fire within the fire box.
With these prior constructions the point at which the burner enters the fire box has been left uncovered and the fire bricks on the opposite sides of the burner have not been held in spaced relation from the burner. As a result the tube sheet at the point where the burner enters has been quickly destroyed owing to the intense heat and in some cases the. fire bricks on opposite sides of the burner have fallen. over upon the burner and due to their intense heat the brass of the burner has been melted, and consequently, the efficiency of the burner has been destroyed.
It is the primary object of the present invention to furnish an improved brick adapted to lie between the fire bricks on opposite sides of the burner and to protect the tube sheet in the rear of the burner. This fire brick is so constructed that if it falls inwardly it will clear the burner and consequently will not melt the brass from which the burner is formed. In addition to this the fire brick provides a recess to permit condensations within the fire box to flow outwardly.
With the foregoing objects outlined, and With other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described in detail, illustrated in the Serial No. sooner accompanying drawing, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawing, 1 designates a fire box from which the heated gases pass into a boiler 2. 3 designates the locon'iotive cab and 4 isthe door opening of the fire box. The fire box in the present instance is provided with a refractory bottom plate 5 which is inclined toward the front of the fire box in order that the condensates produced within the fire boxmay drain out through an aperture 6 provided in the tube sheet 7. The tube sheet is protected on'opposite sides of the burner 7 by means of fire bricks 8 some of which have damper controlled apertures 9 to admit air to the interior of the fire box. 10 designates the table sheet of the fire box which is protected from the heat within the fire box by means of table sheet fire bricks 11 and by the upper ends of the fire bricks 8. Arranged between the fire bricks 8 at the opposite sides of the burner 7" is my improved fire brick 12 which is preferably of H-shape and includes paralled vertical legs 13 connected by an intermediate cross bar 14:. The fire brick 12 is provided with upper and lower recesses 15 and 16. This specifically formed fire brick protects the tube sheet 7 and permits the burner 7 to project into the fire box, and the condensates to drain out through the aperture 6. It will thus be understood that the brick 12 prevents the bricks 8 on its opposite sides from falling toward the burner. If the brick 12 falls inwardly its aperture 15 will permit the same to clear the burner and consequently the hot fire brick will not contact with the burner and cause its destruction.
I have found in actual practice that a fire box which is not protected at the point occupied by the brick 12, has a portion of the tube sheet 7 destroyed within three months while the addition of my improved fire brick 12 protects the tube sheet 7 and the inner edge of the table sheet 10 for a period of approximately two years. It will thus be understood that the improved fire brick adds to the life of the sheets of the fire box and prevents the destruction of the oil burner.
The oil burner is supplied by means of a pipe 17.
From the foregoing I believe that the construction, operation and advantages of my improved construction may be readily understood. by those skilled in the art, and I am aware that various changes may be made the last mentioned brick from the burner, said tube sheet being provided with a drain aperture, and the last mentioned fire brick havin a recess to permit condensates to flow from the fire box through said aperture.
2. A locomotive fire box including an inclined bottom and a tube sheet, a burner extending through said tube sheet, a substantially H-shaped refractory fire brick arranged within the fire box to protect a portion of the tube sheet and spaced away from the burner, a drain aperture in the tube sheet, said brick providing a recess'to permit condensates to flow from the interior of the fire box through said aperture, and ordinary fire bricks arranged on opposite sides of the H-shaped brick for protecting the remaining ortion of the tube sheet.
