UNITED ,STA-IES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO L. RAABE, or JERSEY cITY, NEW` JERSEY, AssIGNoR TO R. IIOE AND oo., or NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION orA NEW YORK.
PRINTING` OYLINI'DER.
Application filed November It is the especial object of thel invention to.
provide a construction embodying a cylinder having more than two plates arranged 1n line across the cylinder in which the plates are positioned on the cylinder in staggeredv relation withv each other, the stagger being suchthat the leading'ends of no two plates -are in line, so thatthere will be only onespace left to forni the margin between two plates where the cylinder is capacitated to carry two plates around,.or between the head and tail end of the plate where the vcylinder is capacitated to carry one plate around, at any given line across the cylinder, this construction affording an increase in the supporting surface for the impression cylinder and the inking rolls, and soon which bear against the forms, constructions Aheretofore used.
It is a further object of the invention to produce a corresponding impression cylinder having the blanket openings corresponding in position to the position of the margin spaces, these Openings being staggered similarly to the staggering of the plates.
With these and other objects not specifically referred to, the invention consists in certain novel parts, combinations and arrangements, which will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features then pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed.
In these drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a printing couple embodying the invention; and
Figure 2 is an end view partly in section of the construction shown in Fig. 1.
Referring now to these drawings, there is illustrated a plate cylinder having three plates arranged in vline across the cylinder, the columns of the plates in the particular over the staggered plate.
15, 1921. serial No. 515,226.4`
`- construction illustrated running lengthwise thereof and the cylinders being capacitated to carry two plates around. l/Vhilethe invention is particularly applicable to a cylinder having three plates across, it will be understood that the invention is not limitedr toy this number but may be employed withcyllnders cap-acitated to carry more than three plates across.
In the kdrawings the form cylinder is indicated by the letter A, this form cylinder being of any usual construction, as a hollow roll or drum provided with interior strengthening ribs or braces, and this cylinder is mounted on a suitable shaft a. In the particular construction illustrated this cylinder is capacitatedto carry two plates around and three plates wide, there thus being six plates on the cylinder, vthese plates being marked. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. In accordance with the invention these plates are arranged on thecylinder in staggered relation to each other. The amount of this stagger may vary,
but it will however be more than the width of a margin'space so that no two margin spaces are in line with each other across the cylinder, and inv the particular construction shown this stagger is about 120. l
Between each two succeeding plates around the cylinder are the` usual-margin bars 7 these margin barsbeing secured to the cylindersurface in any usual orsuitable/ manner, these margin bars acting as plate stops and providing the margin spaces. The plates are locked up on the cylinder in any usual or suitable manner. Asfor instance there is provided a marginring 8 extending around the cylinder and the plates 5, 6 are locked against this ring by clamps 9 operated by clamp operating rods 10. Similarly plates 3 and f1 are locked at one side against the ring, 8 and'on the other side by sliding clamps 11, which are moved to locking position by the plates 1 and 2, these plates 1 and 2 in turn being locked in position by clamps 12 Operated by clamp operating rods 13 from outside the end of the cylinder.
With this construction where the cylinder is capacitated to carry three plates wide l,only one margin space appears on any one line across the cylinder, the impression cylinder and rolls thus being supported across the cylinder for approximately two thirds of the cylinder' width. This increase in the support for the impression member` and the rolls materially reduce pounding as the cylinders pass over the margin gaps, and a rigid smooth running construction is produced.
(lo-operating With the form cylinder are impression means which, in the particular construction illustrated, is a cylinder B formed with a blanket supporting surface 16 and strengthening Webs 17. This cylinder is provided with blankets, three blankets being shown, one for each set of plates on the form cylinder, these blankets being marked 18, A19 and 20. Slots 21. are formed in the cylinder' Wall through which the ends oit' the blankets pass and these blankets are adjusted on the cylinder by the usual blanket adjusting mechanisms, one of these mechanisms being provided for each blanket and operable in any desired manner, as for instance tWo of the blankets may be adjusted from one end of the cylinder, and one oli' the blankets from the other end. These blanket adjusting' mechanisms comprise the usual rod 22 carrying a ratchet 23 controlled by pawls 24, by turning which rods the blankets may be adjusted as desired. The blanket openings are, as illustrated, staggered to correspond With the staggering of the plates.
With this construction a strong, rigid and smooth running arrangement is provided. lVhile the invention is especially applicable to three plates across the cylinder, more than three plates may be employed as desired and the degree of the stagger may be varied as required, and-the invention is not to be restricted to the use of three plates or to the particular amount of stagger shown.
That I claim is:
1. In combination, a form cylinder having more than trvo'plates arranged in line 'across thev cylinder, said plates'being so staggered n with respect to each other that the leading edges of no two plates are in line across the cylinder, and co-operating impressionineans.
2. In combination, a form cylinder having more than two plates arranged in line across the cylinder With a margin space at the head and tail of each plate, said plates beingstaggered with respect to each other with a stagger greater than the Width of a margin space so that the leading edges of no two plates are in line across the cylinder, and cooperating impression means.
3. In combination, a form cylinder having more than tWo plates arranged in line across the cylinder with a margin space at the head and tail of each plate, and said plates being staggered with relation to ,eachV greater than the Width of a margin space so f that the leading edges of no two plates are in line across the cylinder, and co-operating.
impression means.
5. In comblnation, a form cylinder having three plates arranged in line across the cyl-l inder With a margin space at the head'and tail of each plate said plates being staggered with respect to each yother'With a stagger greater than the Width. of a margin space yso i that the leading edges of no two platesare in line across the cylinder, and a cooperating impression cylinder having three blankets and blanket openings staggered correspondingly With the stagger of the plates.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
