@ferilli Melli TOOL HOLDER.
Application filed November 26, i920.
To all whom t may conce/m Be it lrnown that l, lil/*ALTER Soni'. a citi- Zen et the United States7 and a resident of Providence, in the county of Providence and State or Rhode island, have invented certain new and use'lul improvements in Tool Holders, ot which the Following is especiiication.
My invention is an improvement in tool holders, and has for its object to provide holder ot the character speciiierh especially adapted for use with lathes and the like, for firmly holding the tool in any desired position and for inside or outside cutting.
ln the drawings: s
Figure 1 is a side view ot the improved tool holder7 Figure 2 is a plan view,
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 'l of the body ol the tool holder,
Figure i is a section on the line ol Y.Figure 2,
Figure is a view in section7 on line 5-53 ot `Figure l; and
Figure 6 is an edge and face View ot one of the clamping nuts.
ln the present embodiment of the invention. the improved holder comprises a body i of suitable cross section and length, having at one end a head 2 and at the head the body has transverse opening El. intersecting this opening there are two bores l and 5, the bore 4l being at the axis of the body, while the bore 5 is inclined with respect to the said axis, both bores opening at that end of the body which has the head.
rlhese bores 4L and 5 are for receiving cutting tools. and referring to Figure L espeeially, it will be seen that the opening 3 intersects each bore. lWithin these openings E there is arranged a `collar t3 and e nut if'. respectively, which are ot a size to lit within the opening, and to move 'freely in the said opening. The nut 7 is threaded while the opening oil the collar G is plain., and a screw 8 is passed through the opening o'l' the collar 6 and threadedly engages the opening or the nut 7.
The nut and collar as will be evident Jfrom an inspection of Figures 2 and 6 are lrnurled Serial No. 426,515.
on their peripheries for convenience in handling, and have upon their inner ends transverse grooves 9 and l0., respectively, which are adapted to register with and form continuations oil. the bores i and 5.
lflhen a tool is placed in either bore e or 3 the screw 8 is lirst loosened to permit the insertion the tool, after which it is tightened to cleinp the collar and nut on the tool, and to hold it rmly in place. By means of the corrugations on the nut and collar, they may be turned to bring the grooves 9 and l@ into register with the bores and .fl-. tool may be held by the improved holder to cut inside or outside. To cut inside or outside.y it is placed in the bore 5, and to cut a straight hole it is placed in the bore Il.
l claim:
l. tool holder o'l' the character specified. having at one end a transverse opening and inclined and axial bores intersecting the opening and extending transversely o'f the eric thereof. a nut and collar within the opening opposite sides oi the holder and grooved at the bores to forni continuations thereof, and means ior drawing the nut and collar together to clamp them on a. tool in the bore.
2. il. tool holder of the character speciiiech having at one end bores converging toward the. end ot the holder, and a common means for clamping a tool in either bore, said means comprising a nut and a collar., the holder having an opening in which the nut and collar are movable sversely oil the holder.j and means `for drawing the nut and collar together.
3. tool holder or" the character described having et one end bores converging` toward the end of the holder, said tool holder having an opening intersecting said bores. and common means operating in said opening 'lor clamping a tool in either bore.
A tool holder having an axial bore and an inclined bore, said bores converging toward the forward end of the tool, and means for clamping the tool in either bore.
