T. B. ATTERBURY.
Salt and Pepper Dredges Combined. No. 143,951,
Patented Oct. 28,1873.
LSZIEI IM. fil/dm-UTHMRAPH/C mMWosam/vrs PMCESS) UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
THOMAS E. ATTERBURY, or PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR To JAMES s. ATTEBBURY AND THOMAS B. vArr-EBBUnv, or SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SALT AND PEPPER DREDGES COMBINED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,951, dated October 28,1873; application filed October 3, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. ATTER= BURY, of Pittsburg, in the county of A1le= glicny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Combined Salt and Pepper Dredge; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of the dredge with the cover removed. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is atop view of the dredge with the cover in place. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the same in the line as w of Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The nature of my invention consists in a double-chambered salt and pepper. dredge with the partition thereof extended up above its upper rim in form of a segment of a circle or other form which will form a closing partition between the salt and pepper apertures iu the cover of the dredge, and with the salt and pepper' discharging perforations in its cover for the respective chambers located some distance outside of (the vertical axis of the chambers, the construction of the dredge and its cover being such in the particulars stated and in other respects that the two condiments cannot become mixed; nor can they respectively work down between the screwrim of the cover and the screw-fastening of the dredge; nor can the salt apertures be screwed round to' the pepper-chamber, and' vice versa; neither will the pepper be discharged while the salt is being discharged, and vice versa, notwithstanding the dredge is constructed to operate without a valve for closing the respective sets of apertures.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the salt and pepper dredge, made of glass or porcelain, with a handle, and of a circular form internally and of a hexagon form externally. Its base, which is slightly larger than its body, is circular and beaded. At its upper edge it is circular and enlarged and headed. Above this latter bead a short rim with a screw-thread, a, out upon it is formed, said screw-thread beginning on one side and running entirely round and terminating on the same side, as shown. Centrally on this dredge a narrow web or partition, I), rises, commencing at the bottom and extending up to the top of the screw-thread, and from said point continuing in form of a segment of a cirele a distance equal to the depth of the cover which is used upon the dredge. There is a hor izontal shoulder, 0, formed all round between the extending portion of the partition and the screw-thread. B is the cover or top of the dredge, made of sheet metal, and screw threaded to match the screw-thread of the dredge. This cover is, in cross-section, internally the same in form and depth as the extended portion of the partition. Near the base of the cover and on the outer side of the vertical axis of each of the chambers d d, formed by the partition, perforations W W are formed in the cover, the perforations W being larger than those, W, and serving for salt, while theperforations W serve for pepper.
It will be seen that a blank surface, s, for pepper to rise against when salt is being discharged, and a similar siu'faee for salt to rise against when pepper is being discharged, is left above the perforations, and therefore two kinds of condiments cannot, under ordinary use of the dredge, be discharged at the same time. Further, itvfill be seen that the extended portion of the partition separates the two sets of holes of the cover by reason of the cover packing tight upon it. And further, the horizontal shoulder at the top of the screw prevents the insinuation of the condiments between the screw of the cover and of the dredge, while the screw, terminating always on the side it started from, prevents the pertorations getting in the wrong position.
The shape andform of the dredge shown may be varied to suit fancy and taste without departing from my invention.
I am aware that a dredge with two or more com partm en ts an d with a regnlatin g (11' sch argeto secure by Letters Patent, is-
valve is a common thing, and, therefore, I do two sides of its Vertical axis, and fits snugly not broadly claim such contrivance; but down upon said partition, substantiaIly as and What I do claim as my invention, and desire for the purpose described.
THOS. B. ATTERBURY. The withindescribed combined salt and pepper dredge with a partition, 1), extended up beyond its screw-fastening, in combination with the cover or top which is perforated on lVitnesses E. G. KREHAN,
