. BOX.
Application filed October 1, 1917. Serial No. 194,192.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATHIAS R. KoNooLr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification. 1
The object of this invention is to provide a box made up of two or more consecutive sections placed one within the other.
This and other objects of the invention will be fully illustrated in the drawings, described in the specification and pointed out in the claims at the end thereof.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 illustrates one of the blanks used for the making of the section of my im proved box.
Figure 2 illustrates another one of the blanks used for the making of another section of my improved box.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the inner and outer sections put together, with part of the outer section broken away.
t Figure 41 illustrates a modification of the blank shown in Figure 1.
Figure 5 illustrates a modification of the blank shown in Figure 2.
Figure 6 illustrates a modification of the blank shown in Figure 1.
Figure 7 is a perspective View partly broken away of a section made from the blank shown in Figure 5.
Figure 8 illustrates a blank used in making a reinforcement to be used between the sections of any of my improved boxes.
Figure 9 is a perspective view of the blank shown in Figure 8 partially folded.
Figure 10 is a perspective view of two boxes placed together, one box being inverted on the other.
Figure 11 is a perspective view of an alignment piece.
In the drawings like reference numerals indicate like parts.
In the drawings reference numeral 1 indicates the blank shown in Figure 1 and reference numeral 2 indicates the blank shown in Figure 2. The blank shown in Figure 1 is cut on the full lines 3, 1, 5 and 6 and is bent or folded on the dotted lines, on which lines it may or may not be scored. The part indicated by reference numeral 7 will form the bottom of the box. The reference numer als 8 and 9 indicate theside walls of the section and reference numerals 70 and 71 in dicate the end walls of the section- The side walls and end walls will be firstbent up so as to stand at right angles to the bottom 7 or nearly so. On each of the side-wall meinhere 8 and 9 are provided the corner pieces 10 and 11, 12'and13 and on each of the end wall pieces 70 and 71 areprovided' the corner pieces 14:, 15, 16 and 17. The corner pieces of the side wall members lap the end walls and the corner pieces or the end walls lap the side walls as is shown in perspective in Figure 8.
Each pair of corner pieces such as 10 and 14, 1 1 and 15, 12 and-16, 13 and 17 in the.
blank shown in Figure 1 is formed by cutting the respective corner members on a diagonal line, thus adapting each corner piece (in the box section folded from said blank) to lap the wall member which is adjacenttothe attached. In this manner the corner members connect the end and side wall members of their respective box section.
The end wall members 70 and 7130f the blank shown in Figure 1 are provided with. the extensions 18, 19 20 and 21 which when folded overlap the corner sections 10 and 11, 12 and 13 and serve to look them in place and also form pockets for the receptionof the flanges of the cover. The corner pieces 14, 15, 16 and 17 will hold themselves in place as shown in Figure 3 by the natural spring of the material from which the blank is cut or all the corner sections or any part ofthem may be fastened in place by adhesives or by stapling.
In the blank shown in Figure 1, I have of which the end and side wall members will be'doubly fastened to each other and a double thickness of stock will be provided at each corner and on each side of each corner. I regard this as an important feature of my invention.
The blank 2 shown in Figure 2 will be out on the fullline 22, 28, 24 and 25 and .will be folded on the dotted line. In this blank 26 will form the bottom of thevbox. 27 and 28 will form the side walls of the box and 29 and 80 will form the end walls of the box.
The side walls 27 and 28 will first be bent up at approximately right angles to the 75 wall member towhich said corner plece 1s bottom 26, after vhich the end walls 29 and 30 will also be bent up at su stantially right angles to the bottom of the box. The corner pieces 31, 32, 33 and 34!: which are attached to the ends of the end walls and 30 will then be bent over the side walls of the box. The side wall members and 28 are provided with the extensions 35 and 36, 87 and 38 which when folded lap the corner sections 31, 32. 3 3 and 3d and serve to lock them in place and also form pockets for the reception of the flange into the cover. The corner pieces 31, 32, 33 and may also be fastened in place by stapling or by adhe slve.
It will be noted that when the extensions 18 and 20 of the blank shown in Figure l and the extensions a e section 7 cause the 1 .son of the ex- 20 overlappine the same. or
lo and 20 l. and simil the blank ensi one on the other blanks like 5 ol the blank shown in Figure 5 are therefore referred to as a locking means It will be seen that part of tlr members of each blank mentioned are locked and the only loose members are the extension pieces themselves. By loose men'ibers it will be understood that applicant refers to mem here which are not only free to move relatively to the other members but it such movement were continued other members of the section would be progressively freed or unlocked and the section could be collapsed. It is pointed out that the members l l--151617 of the blank shown in Figure 1 are not loose members in this sense because thdugh they are lies to swing about their line of attachment said n'iovejinent is limited and does not result in the unlock ing of other parts of the section.
in the blank shown in F it, no 6 the corner sections l0 l1 l2'- are secured. toget ier and held by the hooks to and ll engaging with the slo" and to When this blank is folded into b0 section the end walls and 71 become the loose members oi the section for the reasons as stated in preceding paragraph.
It will be understood that the blank '1 may be used to form either the inner or the outer section of the box and in either case the blank shown in Figure 2 will form the other section of the box. In every case the inner section will be made slightly smaller than the outer section and the blanks will be cut to correspond. The dillerence in their dimensions will be determined by the thickness of the stock used.
The box is finished by inserting the inner section of: the box in the outer section and pushing it down therein until the bottoms come together.
ldheblanks from which the sections are formed will preferably be coated on one side with an adhesive coating so that the coating will be on the members that are in contact when the sections are coated and brought together.
in Figure l I have shown a blank which corresponds to the blank shown in Figure 1 except that on each of the end wall members but one extension is provided forming in the folded section merely a locking device instead of a pocket and in Figure 5 l have shown a blank which corresponds to the blank shown in Figure 2 except that on each of the side wall members but one extension is provided forming in the folded section merely a locking device thereon instead Or a pocket.
describing the part as shown in Figures 5 like parts correspond to those shown ures l and 2 have been indicated by a .1 ie reference characters that have been usein describing the corresponding parts Figures 1 and 2, the reference character a being added to the characters to distinguish the parts of Figures e and 5 from those of Figures 1 and 2.
In Fix ure l' have shown a perspective view of the finished box made by putting the inner and outer sections together in which part of the outer section is broken away.
in Figure 6 I have shown a modification of the blank which can be used either as an inner or an outer section in conjunction with any of the blanks shown in Figures 1, 2,
and 5. in describing the parts shown in Figure e parts corresponding to those shown 9' e 1 have been indicated by the same ence characters that have been used in ing the corresponding parts in the reference character b be- I added to the nnmerals to distinguish the PhiftS of Figure 1 from those of Figure 6.
As shown in Figure .6 on the corner pieces 12" and 13" l .ave provided the locking books 40 ii and on the corner pieces 10" and 11 1 have provided the slots 42 and with which the hooks 40 and 4:1 engage for the purpose of fastening the corner pieces together in the folded section as is shown in Figure 7. As shown in Figure 7 the blank or" Flgure 6 is folded so as to be used as the outer section of'the box with the interlocking corner pieces outside and if it were to be used for the inner section of the box the interlocking corner pieces would 'bered 45 and comprises the bottom member 46, side wall members 47 and 48, end wall members 49 and 50 and the corner members 51 and 52 and 53 and 54, all of which corner members are attached to the end wall members; The parts are cut on the full lines and are folded on the dotted lines and or may not be scored. I
In Figure 9 I have shown the blank e6 partially folded for use between the sections in the finished box.
In Figure 10 I have shown two boxes made according to invention, one of which is inverted on the other with a single cover between them. The cover is placed on the upper box and this box is then inverted on the lower box and thus one cover is made to do for both boxes. The flanges of the cover will alternately engage in the pockets or between the sections of the upper and lower boxes. The boxes will be fastened together by a single piece of adhesive tape 56 which will run around the meeting edges of the boxes.
In Figure 11 I have shown an alignment piece 60 which engages both the upper and lower box and serves to hold the two boxes in alignment.
The extensions 19 and 21, 36 and 38 may be omitted as shown in'Figures l and 5 and in which case no pocket would be formed, for the adhesive would fasten both sides of the remaining extensions to the wall meme bers.
To avoid this an extra piece can be used as is indicated at 59 in Figure 4: which piece .would be placed along the top edge of the box at points where pockets are desired, either between the folded sections after they are brought together or attached to the blanks before it is folded. These pieces will be held in place by the adhesive coated on one of the sections. Y
I It will be understood that the blanks described in this application will each be plurality of blanks each comprising end and I side wall members and a bottom member and coated on one side with an adhesive before folding and after being coated, eachblank will be formed up into a section and the sec tions will be placed one within 'anotherwith an adhesive between the sections with the bottom members superimposed after which the layers are pressed together so as to make them adhere to each other closely.-
