PATENT OFFICEr JOHN UTTER, OF CENTRAL FALLS, RHODE ISLAND.
. El IMPROVEMENT IN PLANINvG-MACHINES.
Speciiicaton forming part of Letters Patent No. l
43,734, dated October 14, 1873; application tiled August 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN UTTER, of Cen-` tral Falls, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a Clamp to Secure Lumber to the Bed of a Danielsor other Movable-Bed Planer, of which the fop lowing is a specication:
The iirst part of my invention consists of a movable bed or slide that may be secured on top of the planer-bed at any point required, with movable jaws thereon that may be secured at any part of the slide, and the faces of which are at right angles with the top of the slide; the object of these being'to present the edges of the lumber to the planer-knives at right angles, for the purpose of jointing them square and straight. The second part of my inven-` tion consists of a segment secured to the side of the movable jaws by two set-screws, upon one of which it revolves, whileA the other secures it in the position desired; the object of this being to present `the vlumber to the planerknives at any desired angle.
Figure l is a side elevation of the machine embodying my invention, the dotted lines showing the position of Fig. 3 when in use. Fig. 2`r is an elevation, showing` a rear view of the machine. Fig. 3 is a side view of the segment.
A is a portion of the planenbed. B B are l thin pieces of metal secured to the side of the other, for the purpose of receiving the lng d and set-screw a, Fig. 1, to secure the bed or 4slide C to the planer-bed. C is the bed or slide, that should be made of metal, and of an equal thickness, with the top T-shaped, the lugs ot' the jaws D catching under the T. D D are the jaws, also of metal, grooved on the under side to fit the bed, and secured in place by the set-screw b, Fig. 2. The under part of the groove 'should be at right angles with the face, so that the face will stand at right angles with the slide when the set-screw is tight. E is the segment, of metal of a moderate thickness, se cured to the jaws D D by set-screws c c, Fig. l, as shown by dott-ed lines.
I claim as my invention- A device constructed substantially as and for the purpose described.
JOHN UTTER.
