IMPROVEMENT IN DICE-BOXES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,511 9, dated October 14, 1873; application fil ed April 11,1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN TWAMLY, of Troy,

county of Bensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Globular Dice-Boxes, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to an improved device intended to take the place of dice or teetotums in deciding games of chance or wagers, and may be adopted under all circumstances where either of them are used.

Figure 1 is a full view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of the same. Fig. 3 isa top view of Fig. 1.

A, Fig. 1, is a hollow sphere attached to the handle O by the glass tube B. It is made in practice in two parts, which are joined together at O, as is shown clearly in Fig. 2. The cavity of the globe or sphere A communicates by a funnel-shaped aperture, 61, Fig. 2, with the tube B, which latter is set tightly into the neck of the said globe or sphere A. The tube B is made long enough to leave a certain portion of its length bare, and the remainder is tightly set into the handle O, Fig. 2. Upon the outside of the globe or sphere A are vertical and similar rows of figures, from one (1) to" six (6), of different colors, but with the order of the six different colors the same in each row, thus all the ones (1s) would be, as in the present case, white, all the twos (2s) green, all the threes (3s) red, 850., &c. Three of these rows are shown in the present case disposed at equal distances on the surface of the ball, but their number may be increased or diminished at pleasure. Within the sphere A are a number of balls, a a a, Fig. 2, of glass, or some other suitable material, of such size as to enter freely the tube B through the funnel-shaped aperture 11, Fig. 2, and fit loosely therein, but not so loosely as to pass one another. The

total number of balls should be a multiple of six, in the present case eighteen, and they are of difierent colors, corresponding to the colors of the numbers in each of the vertical rows.

The portion of the tube B which is exposed between the globe A and the handle B is of such a length that for every set of six balls contained in the apparatus one is contained in it and exposed to the view of the spectators concerned. In the present case, since there are eighteen balls, three of them are exposed, a a a, Fig. 1.

The mode of using my invention is as follows: The apparatus having been duly agitated is held in a vertical position, handle downward, the balls descend by their own weight into the tube B, leaving three of their number only exposed to view. The colors of these are compared with the colors of the figures in any one of the rows, and the numbers thus indicated are scored to the player. Each set of colored balls represents asingle die, three such sets-eighteen balls--represe11t three dice, the number customarily .employed in this country. One, two, three or more dice may be represented in this most portable and convenient form, by varying the number of the balls, which may be readily done by opening the sphere A at the joint or parting c. The disposition of the vertical rows of figures on various sides of the globeA permits all'the spectators simultaneously to observe the progress of the game, and by the nature of the apparatus the frauds that so frequently accompany the use of dice, become impossible.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The globular or other formed chamber A, provided 011 its outer surface-with differentlycolored numbers, in combination with the transparent tube B and handle 0, substantially as described. 7

2. In combination with the subject-matter of the above clause of claim, the balls at a, arranged to correspond in color with the figures on said chamber, substantially as set forth.
