WINDOW LocK.
Application filed March 8, 1922. Serial No. 542,051.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NEWTON J. BISHOP, a citizen of the United btates, residing at Vl ashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful \Vindow Lock; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to window locks and has for its object to provide a device of this character preferably formed from heavy wire bent to form a coil adapted to engage the upper sash, a loop offset from the coil and adapted to be received in the groove of the window frame in which the lower sash is slidably mounted and terminating in a prong and extending outwardly and thence inwardly and imbedded in the upper sash, thereby forming means for holding the upper sash and causing the lock to slide with the upper sash. The coil is provided with a downwardly and outwardly inclined loop adapted to be engaged by the upper end of the lower sash for limiting the movement of the sash toward each other. Also to pro vide theouter endof the coil with an upwardly extending arm terminating in a prong imbedded in the upper sash adjacent the parting strip and forming means for bracing the coil and additionally holding the device.
A further object is to provide a window lock detachably carried by the upper sash and having a guiding loop slidably mounted in the window frame groove of the lower lVith the above and other objects in view the lnvention resldes 1n the combination and arrangement of'part-s as hereinafter set forth,
the upper sash engaging arms eliminated and the device formed for the right hand slde of the window.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a portion of a conventional form of window frame and 2 the vertically disposed groove in which the lower sash 3 moves. The inner side of the groove 2 is formed by the parting strip 4 and slidably mounted on the outer side of the parting strip 4 is the upper sash 5. The window lock hereinafter set forth is designed to be attached to the upper sash in any position desired to limiting the amount of movement of either the upper or lower sash in an open direction, thereby preventing the entrance of unauthorized persons such as burglars,
sneak thieves and the like.
The window lock 6 comprises a coiled body portion 7 formed from a single piece of wire, which body portion engages the upper sash 5 as shown in Figure .1. The end 8 of the coil terminates in a downwardly extending loop 9 having its arms 10 in parallel relation, said loop being adapted to incline outwardly towards the inner face of the sash 5. One of the arms 10 extends upwardly adjacent the end 11 of the coil 7 and is provided with a convolution 12, an eye 13 and an upwardly extending arm 1a. The upwardly extending arm is preferably in parallel relation with the 10 and is bent at 15 to form a right angled'arm 16, which terminates in a prong 17 adapted to be imbedded in the upper sash 5 adjacent the parting strip 4, which parting strip braces the prong and at the same time by positioning the prong 17 adjacent the parting strip 1, the marring of the window frame will not be readily noticeable. Convolution 18 at the end 11 of the coil 7 terminates in a curved portion 19 extending through the eye 13 and the horizontal portion 20, which horizontal portion terminates in an offset substantially rectangular shaped loop 21 which is adapted to be disposed in the lower sash groove 2 as shown in Figure 1. The loop 21 is expansible and like the other parts of the device is formed from heavy spring wire, the expansible feature forming means whereby the device may be applied to window grooves 2 of different widths, and at the same time prevents displacement of the device as the upper sash 5 is moved upwardly or downwardly by its sliding frictional engagement with the walls of the groove To additionally hold the device the offset loop 21 terminates in an outwardly and inwardly extending arm 22, which is provided with a prong 23 adapted to be imbedded in the upper sash 5 adjacent the parting strip 4 and preferably in vertical alignment with the prong l7.
Referring to Figure 3, the structure is substantially the same with the exception that a fastener is shown for use on the right hand side of the window frame and sash and the arms 14: and 16 and the prongs 17 are eliminated.
From the above it will be seen that a win dow lock is provided which is positive in its operation, supported from tie window groove and the lower sash, and one which will move with the upper sash when said upper sash is moved upwardly or downwardly. It will also be seen that the device is formed from a single piece of wire and so constructed that when the lower sash 23 is raised and comes into engagement with the loop 9 that the coiled body portion 7 and the device as a whole will be forced into frictional binding and holding engagement with the upper sash 5 and the device as a whole rigidly locking the two sashes together against movement towards each other. By forming the device from a single piece of wire it will be seen that the device may be cheaply manufactured and sold.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A window lock comprising a body portion adapted to engage the upper sash, a downwardly and outwardly inclined portion carried by said body portion and adapted to be engaged by the lower sash, an offset portion adapted to slidably engage in the window frame groove of the lower sash, a p ong carried. by the offset portion and imlazulded in the upper sash, an arm extending upwardl from the outer end of the body portion,-'said arn'i. having its end imbedded in the upper sash. I
2. The combination with vertically slidable upper and lower sashes, slidably mounted in vertical channels of a window frame, said sashes being separated by a parting strip, of a window fastener carried by the upper sash, said window fastener comprising a body portion engaging the sash. a downwardly extending portion adapted to be engaged by the lower sash, an offset expansible loop carried by the body portion and disposed in the frame groove of the lower sash, an arm extending upwardly from the body portion and having its end imbedded inthe sash adjacent the parting strip, and an arm carried by the offset loop and imbedded in the upper sash adjacent the parting strip.
3. The combination with vertically slid able upper and lower sashes slidably mounted invertical channels of a window frame, said sashes being separated by a parting strip, of' a window lock carried by the upper sash and formed from a single piece of wire, said lock comprising a body portion formed from coils, a downwardly extending lower sashv engaging loop, an offset loop adapted to be received in the channel of the window frame, said loop terminating in an outwardly extending arm adapted to be imbedded in the upper sash adjacent the parting strip, said body portion being provided with an upwardly extending arm terminating in a prong adapted to be imbedded in the upper sash adjacent the parting strip.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NEWTON J. BISHOP.
