PAUL STRANGE, OF NEENAH, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN STRANGE PAIL COMPANY, OF MENASHA, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF WISCONSIN.
PAIL.
' To all whom. a may concern:
Be it known that 1, PAUL STRANGE, citizen of the United States, residing at Neenah, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pails, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates. to improvements in pails. particularly those of the type iorn'iing the subject matter of U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,118,695, the objects of the invention being to provide a container of increased strength, carrying capacity and durability, which may be more conveniently handled, both empty and filled, in packing, sealing and. shipping, and which will sustain a greater weight in storage or in transit. than those of earlier design.
Other features of advantage will become apparent as the nature of the improvements is letter understood from the following detailed description of a preferred embodimentof the invention which is based upon the accompanying illustrative drawings.
the
It will be understood, however,
drawings and description. are exemplary only. and are not to be taken as suggestive of a limitation in the possibilities of application of the invention or as unnecessarily limiting the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a pail with the cover sealed;
Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the cover slightly raised;
Fig. 3 is a top view;
Fig. a. is a vertical section through the pail and sealed cover;
Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional view show ing the construction of the cover and the manner in which it is sealed to the body of the pail;
Fig. 6 is a sectional view showing constructional features at the bottom of the pail.
Having reference to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the body portion or downwardly converging side wall of a fibre board pail. A supporting hoop 11, a bottom 12 and strengthening hoop 13 are introduced in that order into the top of the pail and pressed downwardly until the lower edge of hoop 11 is flush with the lower edge of the side wall 10, the inner lower portion of said side wall having been previously-coated with glue or other mucilaginous substance. The members 11,12 and 13 are so proportioned with respect to the side wall. and to each other as to fit tightly together.
To protect the lower edge of the pail and to additionally support the bottom 12, a flanged metal band it is glued and stapled to the exteriorof the side wall 10, the flange portion 15 thereof being turned in wardly and extending beneath the hoop 11, as clearly shown in Fig. 6. l
A. hoop 16, a wire ring 17 and another hoop-18, of such proportions as to snugly engage the upper outer portion of the side wall 10 are glued to the latter and stapled together and to the side wall. The wire ring 17 is bent to provide a plurality of cars 19, diametrically opposed in pairs to receive the bail 20 and the cover sealing 3 wires 21.
V The cover 22 is of equal diameter with the top of the pail, and is provided at its outer edge with an angular shaped protective metal band 23, the depending portion '24 of which encircles the upper end of the body. portion and the lateral flange 25 of \VlllCltQFZtfinflS over the edge of the cover.
A pair oi. wooden cross strips 26 are fastened to the cover by staples, as indicated at 7, or by other suitable means, the ends thereof overlying the lateral flange of the band 23, thus making the cover a unitary member, which is much more easily handled 1n shipping, packing and sealing than was the case when the cover and band were not fastened together.
The strips 26 also form supports for the sealing wires 21., the ends of which are bent around the unoccupied ears 19. Additional advantages in providing the cross strips are that the pail is thereby made capable of sustaining a heavier superposed weight, and may not readily be lifted by the sealing wires.
I claim p 1. in a pail the combination with a body portion, of a cover, cross strips overlying the cover, and sealing wires extending along said cross strips and having their ends se cured at the sides of the body portion.
2. In a pail the combination with a body portion. of a cover, a depending angular metal band seated upon the edge of the cover. cross strips overlying the cover and. band, and sealing wires extending along said cross strips and having their ends secured at the sides of the body portion.
In a pail the combination with a body portion, having near the upper end thereol a wire ring provided with ears, of a cover, 2. depending angular metal band seated upon the edge of said cover, cross strips fastened to the top of the cover and overlying said band and sealing wires extending along said cross stripsand adapted to be secured to the' eitrs of said ring.
45 A. container comprising a trusx'zo-eonie cal boa wall, a' bottom having '3. peripheral contact with the inner face oli'the body wall, a tr'rustoroniml hoop above the bottom havinn peripheral face contact'with the body wall and marginal contact with the bottom aboutits edge to retain it against upward displacement, said hoop being secured to the body wall; a second frusto conical hoop having' peripheral. face contact with the body wall. below the bottom and engagingthe latter about its edge to hold same against downward displacement, and a rigid band constraining the body wall over the area of contact of the bottom therewith and extending across the lower margins ot-the body wall and lower hoop.
5. A, containercomprising a body portion provided near its bottom'with straight walls, a hoop secured to the lower inner end thereof, a bottom resting upon said hoop a second hoop secured to the lower inner end of my name in the presence ol? two subscribing witnesses.
