My invention relates to the construction of railway freight cars of the dumping-type.
and has for its principal object" to provide an. improved sheet metal door for cars of this type, more especially :tor cars known as general service ears, (intended to serve as ordinary 'gondola cars for the transportation ot miscellaneous reht, as Well as bulk loads that can be dumpe .-1 having reinforcing ribs or corrugations so formed that the corrugations providemaximum strength and rigidty to the body and marginal port-ions oit the' door. l My invention .provides an improved reinforced door of the above character having corrugations which are pressed so that they project alternately above and below the original plane of the sheet. The door consists or a sheet metal 'panel 46, preferably, although not necessarily, composed of a` single sheet of metal. The door sheet, as it may be termed, to the center sill l0 (the hinges being indicated at 49). The end marginal ortions 56,' 57 of the door sht and the si e marginal against the under side of the inturned part of the side sheet 12 are in the'same plane and are referably formed with downturned rigidi ying Hanges. The door panel 46 is reinforced by a pair of Z-bars 4:7, 48 on the under side of the corrugated plate, these Z-bars running in the direction transverse to the corrugations and being located near the ends of the same so as to stiften the panel longitndinallyV of the car so as to prevent sagging under the load. which have been designated 54, extend at the side of the margin 55 beyond. the Z-bar 47, as indicated at 59, while the depressed corrugations 58 and the end upstanding corrugations 54a terminate short of the place Where the Z-bar 47 is attached to tblesheet., rlhe marginal portion 60 on the hinged side of the door is pressed down below margins 55, 56, 57 to the level of the bottoms of the depressed corrugations 58. By this arrangement any moisture will drain oft' along the depressed edge 60 of the panel instead of being trapped, as would be the case, if both ends of the corrugations were below the adjacent uncorrugated margins. rlhe corrugations are made to terminate wit-hin the edges of ,the sheet so that they will give rigidity. The extremities of the marginal portions 56--57 adjacent the center sill are depressed, as indicated at 49a tothe level of the marginal'portio-n 40 of the sheet. 'lhis configuration of the sheet adapts it to lit snugly into place under the center sill and side sheets of the car; Preferably the Zbar 47 is fastened at its extremities to the end flanges 61 of the door panel by means of angular gussets 62 (Fig. 3). By the disposition of corrugations and of reinforcing means just described, the free edge of the door, which is, of course, particularly subject to defectionand warping, is made very ri `d.
claim:-
1. ln combination with a railway car having a dumping opening in the bottom, a Sheet metal door for closing said openingformed with corrugations which alternately project. above and below a flat marginal portion of the door sheet, and a reinforcing element on the under side of the sheet adjacent said marginal portion and lying transversely to said corrugations, the npstanding corrugations extending over said reinforcing element and the depressed corrugations terminating short of the saine.
2. ln combination with a railway car having a dumping opening in the bot-torn, a sheet metal door for closing said opening door and a web projecting therefrom, and a retaining device to prevent the tendency of said reinforcing member to rotate on its longitudinal axis.
. 3. ln combination with a railway car hav.- ing a dumping opening, sheet metal door to close said. opening formed with a 4plurality of rigidifying ribs consisting of relatively long ribs and shorter ribs disposed in alternate arrangement across the sheet and terminating within the edges of said sheet, said sheet being formed so that portions of the corrugations project below the plane of the adjacent uncorrngated parts of the sheet while the corrugations at one end are entirely above the uncorrugated marginal part of the sheet adjacent thereto for drainage purposes.
4. ln a railway car of the type described, the combination of the fixed portion of the car bottom constructed to provide a dumping opening, and a hinged door to close said opening formed of a metal sheet having pressed therein relatively long corrugations and shorter corrugations disposed in alternate arrangement, the crests of certain of said corrugations being substantially flush with the upper surface of the xed portion of the car bottom when the door is in its closed position.
ln combination with a railway car'having a door opening inthe bottom, a sheet metal door to close the same formed with a plurality of corrugations consisting of relatively long corrugations and shorter corrugations disposed in alternating arrangement across the door sheet, the portions of the relatively short .corrugations adjacent one of the `edges of said sheet projecting below the adjacent marginal parts of the sheet while the opposite ends of the corrugations stand substantially above the nncorrugated part of the marginal sheet adjacent thereto,

9. ln combination wlth a railway car havsheet metal door to close the'same formed with a depressed portion which extends along one edge of the ldoor sheet, said door being formed with corrngations which roject above the depressed portionot the oor sheet but below the other marginal portion thereof, and corrngations disposed in alter-pA nating arrangement with the rst mentioned corrngations formed to project above said other marginal portions ot' the sheet.
