A. D. 000. MAGNETIC LIfTING'DEVlCE. APPLIQATION FELED JULY I2, I92].

' aura srssrreur desire.
ALAN D. WOOD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF HARRY A. LEWIS, OLE NOR-RISTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
ONE-THIRD TO MAGNETIC LIF'IING DEVICE.
To aZZ who mil may concern.
Be it known that I, ALAN D. 001), a citizen of the United States, and resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania. have invented a new and useful Improvement in Magnetic Lifting Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a magnetic lifting device.
In an application filed by me August 9, 1920, Serial No. 402,286, I have illustrated and described a magnetic lifting device comprising a holder, a ma net with means for securing the magnet to the holder, and a downwardly projecting fulcrum member on the holder. The present invention has relation to this type of magnetic lifting device, and has for its object to provide means for .more positively holding the article, such as a safety-razor blade, in position on the lifting device than is provided for in the device of said application.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved magnetic lifting device in position for lifting a thin article, such as a safety-razor blade; Fig. 2 shows the position of the device to release or separate the magnet from the blade; Fig. 3 is a side view showing the jaw feature in operation; Fig. 4: is a view showing the manner in which the blade is forced into the jaw; and Figs. and 6 show modified forms of my invention.
In the drawing the numeral 2 designates a. suitable magnet which may be of the horseshoe type having the beveled ends 3. which provide for applying the magnet to the razor blade at on an angle, as indicated in Fig. l.
Pivotally mounted, by the pin 5, on the magnet 2 is the clamping member 6 which is provided with the jaw '7 and the lever-arm 8 Interposed-between the lever-arm 8 and the magnet 2 is the spring 9 which acts to normally hold the jaw T in open position.
. The clamping member is made of brass or other suitable metal.
lVhere the device is to be used without the clamping member the magnet is held in the position indicated in Fig. 1, so that the beveled portions 3 will rest upon the razor blade 4:, and in this manner the blade may be lifted. lVhen it is desired to release the blade, the device is lowered into the position indicated in Fig. 2, whereupon the lever-arm 8 acts as a fulcrum to release the magnet from contact with the blade, where upon the device may be lifted from the blade without disturbing the position of the blade.
Where the clamping member is to be employed, the device is brought into the position indicated in'Fig. 3 where the outer ends ofthe magnet engage the blade and attract it from its support, whereupon the device is lifted into the position indicated in Fig. i and, by pushing down on the blade, the blade is forced into the space between the magnet and the jaw 7. whereupon by pressing on the lever-arm 8 the jaw is forced into clamping position to engage and positively hold the blade so that it can be moved about without any danger of its dropping, as might be the case were it only held by the attraction of the magnet. In this manner I provide for the picking up of the blade by the magnet and when once lifted the blade may be forced into the jaw and clamped securely in position.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I have illustrated av modified form of my invention in which the leverarm 10 has the fingers 11 which may be used as fulcrum points when it is desired to release the magnet from the blade, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 6.
The jaw 12 is forked as at 13, and the prongs of the fork are sharpened so as to readily slip under the razor blade, so that it is not necessary to bring the blade into the position indicated in Fig. 4- to get it properly in the jaw.
.What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a magnet, a clamping member pivotally mounted thereon, comprising a jaw on one side of the magnet and a lever arm on the opposite side.
In a device of the character described, the combination of a magnet, a clamping member pivotally mounted thereon, com prising a jaw on one side of the magnet, and a spring actuated lever arm on the opposite side.
3. In a device of the character described. the combination of a magnet, a clamping member pivotally mounted thereon, comprising a jaw on one side of the magnet, a lever arm on the opposite side, and a spring on the arm interposed between said arm and said magnet.
4:. In a device of the character described, the comblnatlon ot a magnet, a clamplng member pivot-ally mounted thereon, compr1sing a forked jaw on one side of said magnet, 10 and EL lever arm on the opposite side.
In testimony whereof, I, the said ALAN D. Woon, have hereunto set my hand.
ALAN D. WVOOD.
Vtitnesses :HAROLD D. ESTEIZLY, WARREN B. THWAITES.
