. Be it known that I, WILLIAM C'LBRIGGS, a
citizen of the United States,. residing in Elizabeth, New Jersey, have invented Hoists, 6 of which the following is a specification.
, My invention relates to that type of hoist whose mechanism is actuated by an electric motor and more particularly to hoists primarily designed tofbe operated by a manually actuated chain or rope.
One objectof my invention is to provide novel means for operatively connecting a hoist of the above type with an electric motor, which means shall be relatively simple in construction as well as reliable in operation.
It is further desired to provide a novel mounting especially designed to support an electric motor upon the hoist which it is intended to operate ;the invention contemplating a novel form of unitary structure especially designed to insure the perfect alignment of such motor with its associatedbearings and the gearing whereby power is transmitted to the hoist.
Another object of the invent-ion is to provide a novelform/of unit which shall include an electric motor with the necessary gearing,particularly adaptedto be applied terial change exceptsuch alterations as may be required. to fit it to hoist frames of the sev eral types and sizes.
These objects and other advantageous ends I attain as hereinafter set forth, reference being which,

In the above drawings 1 represents the frame work and enclosing casing of a geared hoist of the type commonly actuated by a hand-operated chain or rope which passes over a suitable sprocket or sheave 2 operatively connected to the mechanism of the hoist, the detail construction of which has no bearing upon the present invention, and is not illustrated. In accordance with my invention however, theelement 2 has rigidly and if desired, detachably fixed to it a ring had to theaccompanying drawings, in
eitherby hand or by power.
In carrying out my invention I provide an electric motor 4 of suitable capacity and preferably of the enclosed type, whose armature' shaft 7 or an extension of the same has mountedfupon it a worm 11 meshing with a worm wheel 9 which is loosely mounted on a shaft 12 and driven a friction element as a safe guard against overload. This latter shaft also has fixed to it rigidly, a pinion 13 meshing with the ring gear 3 which as before noted is connected to the element whereby power is to be transmittedto the mechanism of the hoist.
Further in'ac'cordance with my invention, the head or end frame 5 of the electric motor is forined as part of an integral casting having portions6 and 8 enclosing respectively the worm 11 and the worm wheel 9 and also has an elongated tubular portion 10 enclosing the shaft 12. This latter portion provides or supports bearings 14 for carrying said shaft and its. associated worm wheel 9 and pinion 1'3, and this portion 5 likewise includes a structure 15 designed to form a support for the motor and one end of the armature shaft as well as serve as or support, the bearing for carrying the load and to varlous types of hand hoists without ma hrus of the worm 11.
The portion '10 of the integral structure 5 68- has projecting from it a pair of arms or brackets 16 designed to fit the casing 1 of the hoist to which the power unit above described is to be applied, it being obvious that the shape and proportions of these parts may be Widely varied without departing from my invention, to suit them to hoists of various forms and sizes.
With the above described arrangement of parts it is obvious that without change other than to attach the ring gear 8 to the chain wheel 2, my power unit, consisting of the electric motor with the reduction gearing comprised by the worm 11 and worm wheel 9, shaft 12 and pinion 13, may be quickly and conveniently applied to a hoist, it being especially noted that the arrangement as a whole is compact and its parts are so disposed as to require little if any head space above the hoist in excess of that required by the suspending hook 17 The motor may be controlled by any suitable means known to the art and may be utilized to actuate the hoist in the manner gear 3'whereb'y the hoist can be operated i and at a speed dependent upon the design of its gearing. It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to any particular form of safety clutch since the detail construction of this device may be widelyvaried'without departing from my invention. It is especially to be noted that by reason of the fact" that the parts 5-6-8 and 10 are made in one integral structure, the perfect alignment of the various power transmitting elements is insured, but in addition, the rapid and convenientinstallation of the device is made possible and its reliable and efficient operation is safe guarded. I
,So far as my invention is concerned, it is immaterial whether or not the hand wheel 2 is used in connection with the gear 3 for transmitting power from the shaft 12 to the mechanism of the hoist, since my device is applicable with equal advantage to hoists designed for hand operation as well as to those having no provision for a manually operated device such as a chain or rope.
1. A power unit foruse with hand-operated hoists comprising a shaft; agear on said shaft adapted for connectionjwith the mechanism of the hoist; an electric motor; worm gearing connecting said shaft and the armature shaft of the motor; with an integral casing structure adapted to carry said motor and including bearings for the said shaft and for the said armature shaft and having means for attaching said casing to the body of the hoist.
2. A power unit for use with hand-operated hoists comprising an electric motor; a shaft; :1 gear on said shaft adaptedfor connection with the mechanism of the hoist; a worm Wheel on said shaft; a worm engaging said worm wheel; a shaft for said worm; an integral casing structure having bearings for said shafts; means for supporting said motor in position for connection with said worm shaft; and means for attaching the casing to the body of the hoist.
3. A power unit for use with a hand operated hoist comprising a shaft, a gear on said shaft for connection with the mechanism of the hoist, an electric motor, Worm gearing connecting the armature shaft of said motor to said first shaft, a slip friction clutch connecting said worm gearing with the latter shaft, an integral casing structure adapted to carry said motor and including bearings for said shafts, with means for attaching the casing to the body of a hoist. l. A power unit for ahan d operated hoist comprising an electric motor, worm gearing connected to the armature shaft ofsaid motor, a multiple discfi'iction clutch having one member connected to said worm gearing, a shaft connected to the'other member of the clutch, gearing for connecting the shaft to the mechanism of a hoist, a supporting structure for the motor including bearings for said shaft and said worm gear ing, with means for attaching said casing to the body of a hoist.
