Une of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple substantiel easily in: stalled device for automobiles, whereby theft or operation of an automobile by unauthorized persons may be prevented, enolespecially to provide a device whereby the fuel supply to the cerburetor may be shut ed and locked. 4 Another object of the invention is to pro vide a device whereby the fleet actuated valve of a carburetor may be opened and closed, and especially to provide u device operable from t e dashboard oi-e car for opening and closing the float actuated valve, and further to provide means operable in conjunction therewith for locking the valve when in closed position. v. Uther objects will hereinafter appear. The invention consists of the parts and the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter niore iully described and claimed, halving reference to th accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a central vet" tical section through a carburetor showingthe application of the invention.

Slidably mounted in the sleeve 15 ise drew rod 17, on the outer end of which is formed a heed member 18; and forming a connection between the draw rod and the plunger ii is a flexible wire 19. lnterposed hetweenthe upper; end of the iitting l2 end, the'plunger proper is a spring 20, which normally serves the function of depressingthe plunger 11 and the valve '5, thereby retaining it hi engagenle'nt with the valve seat 21; and formed on the draw rod is an annular locking groove 22 and aplurality of annular. grooves 28, the function of which will hereinafter he described.
Mounted within the lock casing 16 is e latch 24,'and forming a portion. oi'seid latch is a latch plate 25, which is connected with e pair of springs 26. -lhes'e springs normally serve the function of retaining the latch 24 in engagement with the grooves formed in the draw rod, 'but means are provided for withdrawing the latch against the spring tension. This is accomplished by providing a key opening 27,'through which hey may be inserted. A second openingis formed in the latch plate, as at 28, and shoulders 29 formed in the lower part of seid opening are adaptedtobe en aged by thekey when in serted and turns said engagement of the key with the shoulders 29 causing depression of the letch plate and latch, and therebyape zrmitting free movement or" the draw re 1 1buretor may therefore function in its nor.-

The present mechanism is provided for the purpose of preventing theft of an automoconvenient reach of the driver, it being secured in any suitable manner, or as here shown by screws 30. lit the driver of a'car wishes to leavethe same and wishes to prevent theft of the car or operation by unauthorized persons, he merely grasps the knob 18 and pushes the draw rod inwaridly until the annular locking groove 22 is engaged by the latch 24:. He may then re- -move the key and can safely leavethe car as fuel cannot enter the carburetor through the supply line 8, due to the fact that the valve 21 is positively locked on its seat as it is held in this position by the spring actuated plunger 11. Upon returning and again desiring to use the car, he merely inserts the key and depresses the latch plate together with the latch 24b. This release' the draw rod and it is therefore only necessary .to pull it in an outward direction. Outward movement of the draw rod exerts a pull on the wire 19 and similarly on the plunger 11, thereby raising this against the tensionofthe spring 20 a sufficient distance to permit free movement of the valve 7, the lever 6 and the float 5. Fuel is in this manner automatically supplied and the carmal or usual manner. lit after using the car, and stopping for any length of time,
he may again close the valve 7 by pushing the rod 17 inwardly, but not sufficiently far to bring theannular groove 22 into alignment with the latch. in other words the draw rod is only forced inwardly cient distance to close the valve 7, or to hold it against its seat, and it is temporarily locked in this position due to the fact that the latch is in engagement with one or an-' other of the annular grooves 23. From the foregoing it can be seenthat a fuel checlr and loclr has been provided which positively prevents theft or operation of a car; further that means are provided for locking the fuel supplying valve; if desired, or for merely closing the same it desired; and further that the entire mechanism employed is operable from the dashboard or instrument board, thereby eliminating any inconvenience to the driver when using the mechanism.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by lietters Patent is 1. The combination with the heat chamber in a carburetor and a float. mounted therein, or a fuel supplying valve adapted to be automatically opened and closed by the float, a stem on the valve, a spring actuated' plunger engageable with the stem and adapted to normallyretain the valve in closed position, aflexible wire connected with the springactuated plunger, a tube enclosing the wire, a sleeve with which said tube is connected, a draw rod slidably mounted within the sleeve, a connection between said wire and the draw rod, andmeans for lockin the draw rod against movement.
